Former Minister Ganpatrao Deshmukh Passes Away

  • Ganpatrao Deshmukh, the longest-serving MLA of Maharashtra and a senior leader of the Peasants and Workers Party (PWP), died in Solapur.
  • Deshmukh represented Sangola in Solapur district in the State legislative assembly for 11 terms since 1962 across multiple terms and served as an MLA for 54 years.
  • He got defeated in 1972, but again won in a bypoll n 1974.
  • He had won the Sangola seat in the 2014 state elections for a record 11th time and served in the assembly till 2019.
  • Deshmukh also served as a minister in the government of Sharad Pawar in 1978 and again in 1999 (in Vilasrao Deshmukh cabinet) when his party PWP gave support to the Congress-NCP alliance.

Vaidehi Dongre is Miss India USA

  • Vaidehi Dongre, from Michigan, has been crowned Miss India USA 2021 at the beauty pageant. Arshi Lalani from Georgia was declared the first runner up and North Carolina's Mira Kasari was declared the second runner up. Dongre, who has majored in international studies, won the 'Miss Talented' title in the pageant for giving a flawless performance of Indian classical dance from Kathak.
  • Former Miss World Diana Hayden was the chief guest and chief judge for the pageant. There were 61 contestants from 30 states participating in three different pageants – Miss India USA, Mrs. India USA and Miss Teen India USA. The winners of all three categories get complimentary tickets to travel to Mumbai, India to take part in worldwide pageants.

Iconic Dominican Singer Johnny Ventura Passes Away

  • Iconic Dominican singer Johnny Ventura died of a heart attack at the age of 81.
  • Ventura, whose career spanned six decades, shot to fame after forming a merengue and salsa orchestra called the "Combo Show".
  • The band was considered one of the most significant groups in the musical history of the Caribbean nation.
  • Merengue, which draws on African and Spanish influences, is both a genre of music and a partner dance style.
  • Luis Abinader, President of the Dominican Republic, declared three days of mourning after Ventura's death.

Former England Bowler Mike Hendrick Passes Away

  • Former England and Derbyshire bowler, Mike Hendrick has passed away. He played a major role in two of England's Ashes-series victories and took 87 wickets in 30 Tests for his country between 1974 and 1981. Hendrick, who took 770 wickets in 267 first-class matches and 35 wickets in 22 ODIs, was also the first professional coach of Ireland.

Badminton Legend Nandu Natekar Passes Away

  • Nandu Natekar, one of the legends of Indian badminton, passed away at the age of 88. He won over 100 national and international titles in his career.
  • Natekar, a tennis and cricket player before he excelled in badminton, dominated the world stage from 1950 to 1970. The Pune resident became the first Indian player to win an international event when he won the Sellanger International in Malaysia in 1956. The former World No. 3 made it to the quarter-finals of the prestigious All England Championships in 1954. He won the Men's Doubles National Championship a total of six times, the Men's Singles National Championship a total of six times, and the Mixed Doubles National Championship a total of five times.He won 12 out of 16 singles matches and eight out of 16 doubles matches as part of the Indian team at the Thomas Cup between 1951 and 1963. He also had the distinction of leading the country in the tournament in 1959, 1961 and 1963. He represented India at the 1965 Commonwealth Games in Jamaica.

Eminent Multi-lingual Actress Jayanthi Passes Away

  • Veteran multi-lingual Kanada actress Jayanthi passed away at the age of 76. She was ailing for some time with age-related issues.
  • She has acted in more than 500 films in five languages — Kannada, Telugu, Tamil, Malayalam and Hindi. She was paired onscreen in several films with matinee idol Dr. Rajkumar in Kannada and did the most number of movies with him. She acted with N. T. Rama Rao in Telugu and Gemini Ganesan in Tamil. She also had long collaborations with important filmmakers of the time — Puttanna Kanagal in Kannada and K. Balachander in Tamil. However, all awards for her performance were for her work in Kannada films — four times best actress, twice best supporting actress and two Filmfare awards for best actress. She was called 'Abhinaya Sharade' by Kannada film connoisseurs.
