India extended USD 75 mn line of credit for solar parks in Cuba

  • India extended a line of credit of USD 75 million (over Rs 500 crore) to Cuba for financing solar parks.An agreement was signed between Export-Import Bank of India (Exim Bank) and Banco Exterior De Cuba in July last year came into effect from December 12.
  • Banco Exterior De Cuba is a nominated agency of the Government of Cuba.Under the LoC, the terminal utilisation period is 60 months after the scheduled completion date of the project.
  • As per the agreement, financing of export of eligible goods and services from India would be allowed subject to their being eligible for export under the Foreign Trade Policy. 
 

Manav Thakkar becomes world No.1 in U-21 category

  • Young Indian paddler Manav Thakkar has jumped nine places to become the world no.1 in the Under-21 men's singles category in the latest International Table Tennis Federation (ITTF) rankings.Thakkar is the first Indian to be ranked No.1 in the world in the U-21 category. He had reached the No.1 rank in the U-18 category two years ago, then becoming the first Indian to be ranked No.1 in the world in any age group in table tennis.
  • 19-year-old Thakkar won the U-21 men's singles title at the ITTF Challenge Plus Benemax-Virgo North American Open in Markham, Canada in December last year. He beat Argentina's Martin Bentancor 11-3 11-5 11-6 to win the crown.
  • Thakkar is the fourth Indian to win a U-21 title of such stature after Harmeet Desai, G Sathiyan and Soumyajit Ghosh.

First-of-its kind turtle rehab centre comes up in Bihar

  • A first-of-its-kind rehabilitation centre for freshwater turtles will be inaugurated in Bihar's Bhagalpur forest division in January 2020. The rehab centre, spread over half a hectare, will be able to shelter 500 turtles at a time. 
  • The need to build such a centre was felt after several turtles were found severely wounded and sick when rescued from smuggles by rescue teams.
  • Many turtles were severely injured, sick or dead, while being rescued from smugglers. This centre will play a significant role in treating these animals and their proper upkeep before being returned to their natural habitat.
  • Their tied feet were found and many of them tightly shut in a small pressure cooker used for cooking food on one occasion.

  • In a statement issued a fortnight after the National Company Law Appellate Tribunal (NCLAT) reinstated him, he would not seek executive chairmanship of the group holding company Tata Sons Ltd, nor directorship of three group companies.

Concor incorporates wholly-owned subsidiary

  • State-owned Container Corporation of India (Concor) has incorporated a wholly-owned arm Last Mile Logistics.
  • The arm will handle freight terminals and logistic requirements.
  • CONCOR has incorporated on January 06, 2020, a wholly owned subsidiary company with the name CONCOR Last Mile Logistics Limited.

Saurabh Chaudhary wins gold in National Shooting Championship

  • World No.1, Youth Olympics champion and Asian Games gold medallist, 17-year-old Saurabh Chaudhary asserted his class yet again as he won the men's gold in 10-metre air pistol in the 63rd National shooting championship.
  • After having topped qualification with 583, Saurabh shot 246.4 in the final to beat Sarabjot Singh by 2.5 points. Saurabh's final score was 0.1 point behind the world record set by Kim Song Guk in the Asian Championship in Doha, Qatar.
  • In a strong field of 728 shooters, it was a commendable fare by Saurabh who had dominated the season by winning two individual gold medals in the World Cups, apart from sweeping all the four gold medals in the mixed air pistol with Manu Bhaker. 

India's Magesh Chandran lifts Hastings International chess title

  • India's P. Magesh Chandran remained unbeaten in nine rounds to win the title in the 95th edition of the prestigious Hastings International Chess Congress in Hastings, England.
  • The 36-year old Grand Master (GM) with a FIDE rating of 2479, remained unbeaten and finished in clear first place with 7.5 points from nine games after securing a 33-move draw in the final round against compatriot G.A. Stany.
  • He beat fellow Indian GM Deep Sengupta in the eighth round.

KVIC opens first silk processing plant in Gujarat to boost Patola saree production

  • Khadi and Village Industries Commission (KVIC) inaugurated the first silk processing plant at Surendranagar in Gujarat. This would help cut down the cost of production of silk yarn drastically and increase the sale and availability of raw material for Gujarati 'Patola' sarees locally.
  • The plant has been set up by a khadi institution at a cost of Rs 75 lakh, in which KVIC has contributed Rs 60 lakh.

  • Delhi Assembly elections to be held on February 8. The counting of votes will be done on February 11.
  • The term of the 70-member Delhi assembly will end on February 22 and a new House has to be constituted before that.
  • Chief minister Arvind Kejriwal-led Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) is seeking re-election after a massive win in the last assembly polls held in 2015. The AAP won 67 seats and the remaining three went to the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

Pak Rangers handover 20 released fishermen to BSF at Wagah Border

  • The 20 Indian fishermen, who were released from a Pakistani jail in a goodwill gesture amidst tense bilateral ties, crossed over to the Indian side through the Attari-Wagah border.
  • The fishermen, most of whom hail from Andhra Pradesh, were handed over to the Border Security Force by the Pakistan Rangers, adding they were issued ''emergency travel certificates'' before leaving Pakistan.
  • Immediately after crossing over to the Indian side, the fishermen underwent a medical examination. Some of the released men bowed down and kissed the earth after entering the Indian territory.
  • The released fishermen were identified as S Kishore, N Dhanraju, Garmarthi, Ram Babu, S Appa Rao, G Rama Rao, B Appanna, K Matti, M Guruvulu, N Appanna, N Narsing, V Samuel, K Yarrayya, D S Narain, K Raju, K Venkata, S Kaliyan, Bhavirudu, Samson Rao and Gir Somnath.

Indian Navy launched awareness program about Coastal Security in Maharashtra

  • An expedition to promote the maritime heritage of India and to spread awareness about Coastal Security amongst the coastal communities in Maharashtra, was launched by the Indian Navy from the Naval Dockyard.
  • The expedition will be held until January 11.
  • Vice Admiral Ajith Kumar P, PVSM, AVSM, VSM, ADC, the Flag Officer Commanding-in-Chief, Western Naval Command flagged off the tri-dimensional expedition named Maha-Navy Connect 2020 consisting of yachting, running and cycling teams of 50 naval personnel along three different axes.
  • The expedition extends from Arnala fort, northernmost fort of Maharashtra to Sindhudurg fort, the southernmost fort of Maharashtra, covering more than 555 km. Enroute, the teams will touch Kanhoji Angre (Khanderi), Revdanda, Korlai, Murud-Janjira, Raigad, Suvarnadurg, Jaigad, Ratnadurg, Purnagad, Vijaydurg and Devgad forts.

Royal Navy of Oman ships arrive in Goa for naval exercise ''Naseem-Al-Bahr''

  • Two ships of the Royal Navy of Oman (RNO) arrived in Goa to participate in the 12th edition of the Indo-Oman bilateral naval exercise ''Naseem-Al-Bahr''.
  • RNOV Al Rasikh and RNOV Khassab arrived at Mormugao Port.
  • ''Naseem-Al-Bahr'' (or sea breeze) is a naval exercise between the Indian Navy and the RNO, being conducted since 1993.
  • Indian Navy ships Beas and Subhadra are participating in it, with harbour phase in Goa followed by sea phase off the Goa coast.
  • During the harbour phase, the Commanding Officers of the visiting ships will call on the Flag Officer Commanding of Goa Naval Area.
  • The ships will conduct subject matter expert exchanges on professional topics.
  • The harbour phase also includes sports activities between the Indian Navy and the RNO personnel, reciprocal receptions and planning conferences for the sea phase of the exercise.

Kochi to host global meet on marine ecosystem

  • Eminent marine scientists, oceanographers, fisheries researchers and marine biotechnologists from across the globe are expected to participate in the third international symposium on marine ecosystems – challenges and opportunities (MECOS-3) in Kochi from January 7 to 10.
  • Organised by the Marine Biological Association of India, MECOS-3 will serve as a platform for discussions on a range of topics, including the impact of the climate crisis on marine ecosystems and an unusual warming of the Arabian Sea.

Dubai-based Indian girl who can sing in 120 languages wins Global Child Prodigy Award

Dubai-based Indian girl, who can sing in 120 languages, has won in the 'Global Child Prodigy Awards 2020.  The 13-year-old Sucheta Satish, known as the Dubai Indian High School's nightingale, won in the singing category.

Innovation Awards Presentation Ceremony to be held on January 8

  • Innovation Awards Presentation Ceremony will be held on the 8th of January. These awards will be conferred at the 12th edition of Global Intellectual Property Convention in New Delhi.
  • Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman and former Railway Minister, Suresh Prabhu will be the chief guests at the event. More than 500 delegates from about 25 countries will participate in this three-day conference. 

ASIA PACIFIC DROSOPHILA RESEARCH CONFERENCE

 The fifth edition of the Asia Pacific Drosophila Research Conference (APDRC5) was  held at Pune.
    • The conference is being organised in the country for the first time by the Indian Institute of Science Education and Research (IISER).
    • The last four editions of this conference took place in Taipei, Seoul, Beijing and Osaka.

HRD Ministry takes a leap forward in transforming education sector

  • Human Resource Development Ministry took a leap forward in transforming the education sector with the motto of Education for All and Quality Education. In the year 2019, Dr K Kasturirangan Committee submitted the Draft National Education Policy to the ministry. 
  • The Government had initiated the process of formulating a New Education Policy to meet the changing dynamics of the requirements of the population with regard to quality education, innovation and research.
  • The Ministry has launched the Pradhan Mantri Innovative Learning Program (DHRUV) to identify and encourage talented children to enrich their skills and knowledge. 
  • AIR Correspondent reports that a National Mission to improve learning outcomes at the elementary level through an Integrated Teacher Training Programme, National Initiative for School Heads and Teachers Holistic Advancement -NISHTHA was launched in August last year. This program is aimed at building the capacities of around 42 lakh teachers and Heads of Schools. 
  • Under Samagra Shiksha, a total of 5930  Kasturba Gandhi Balika Vidyalayas have been sanctioned in the country out of which 4881 such schools are operational. In the year 2019-20. An outlay of over Rs 800 crore has been approved under sports grant for over 10 lakh government schools of different categories. 
  • The fresh guidelines for sports and physical education are being prepared.

  • NSE Academy Limited (NAL), a wholly owned subsidiary of the National Stock Exchange of India Ltd (NSE) launched The NSE Knowledge Hub, a unique Artificial Intelligence (AI) powered learning eco-system to assist the BFSI sector in enhancing skills for their employees and helping academic institutions in preparing future ready talent skilled for the financial services industry.
  • Shri Piyush Goyal, Hon'ble Minister of Commerce and Industries; Minister of Railways inaugurated NSE Knowledge Hub in the presence of Shri Vikram Limaye, MD & CEO, NSE and other dignitaries.
  • NSE Knowledge Hub will bring world class content closer to learners in a personalized and community learning environment which allows aggregation, curation, creation and targeting of content making it both learner centric and learner driven. The learning platform is powered by content aggregated from many internal, external, and premium sources, and enhanced by collaborative knowledge sharing from users.

TOURISM AND HOTEL INDUSTRY AWARENESS

Room ACs to have default temperature setting of 24 degrees celsius from Jan 1

  • The Centre has made mandatory the default temperature settings for room air conditioners, of all makes and types, from January 1, which had been formed after consulting with the Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE).
  • "The Centre in consultation with BEE had notified new energy performance standards for Room Air Conditioner (RACs) on October 30, 2019. The 24 degree Celsius default setting has been made mandatory from January 1, 2020 for all room air conditioners covered under the ambit of BEE star-labelling program vide this notification," according to a press release by PIB.
  • "Additionally, the Indian Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio (ISEER) as per the new standards will range from (3.30 - 5.00) for split and (2.70 - 3.50) for window air conditioners, which will be applicable from 1st January 2021 onwards," the release added.

Mizoram govt to organise Zo fest in 10 states, US, Bangladesh

  • The Mizoram government will be organising Zo Kutpui (festival) in at least 10 states across India and countries such as US, Myanmar and Bangladesh.
  • The first edition of the festival will start on January 9 in Vanghmun in Tripura and will be held over three days.
  • The festival will then move to other states which have significant Mizo population, he added.
  • The move is an attempt to unify and strengthen the brotherhood among various Mizo tribes living in different parts of the world.
  • Chief Minister Zoramthanga would grace the event at Vanghmun, while Tourism Minister Robert Romawia Royte would be the chief host of the festival.
