May Calls for another Brexit Extension

  • British Prime Minister Theresa May will ask the European Union for a further, short extension to Article 50 to avoid the U.K. crashing out of the EU on April 12, and has said that she wants to sit down with Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn in an effort to thrash out a solution and break the log-jam.
  • This would potentially allow for a joint approach to the declaration on future relations, which forms part of the withdrawal deal but which would keep the legal treaty governing the U.K.'s relations intact.

FATF May Blacklist Pakistan

  • Pakistan could be blacklisted by the Financial Action Task Force (FATF) due to lobbying by India, as Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi estimated that the country could suffer a loss of $10 billion annually if it remains in the watchdog's grey list.
  • In June last year, the Paris-based FATF had placed Pakistan on the 'grey list' of countries whose domestic laws are considered weak to tackle the challenges of money laundering and terrorism financing.
  • A group of experts from the FATF recently visited Pakistan to review whether Islamabad had made enough progress on global standards against financial crimes to warrant its exclusion from the grey list.

AKP Appeals Istanbul and Ankara Results

  • Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan's AKP appealed against results in Istanbul and Ankara, following a weekend election after tallies showed that the ruling party lost both key cities.
  • Mr. Erdogan's AKP and coalition partner won more than 50% of votes nationwide in local ballot, but defeat in both Turkey's capital and its economic hub would be a setback after the party's decade and a half in power.
  • The AKP appeals with electoral authorities, who have two days to decide whether the claims of irregularities have merit, may signal more ruling party challenges to the surprise Opposition victories.

Indonesia to Raise Imports

  • Indonesia is looking at increasing sugar, rice and bovine imports from India.
  • According to Consul General of Indonesia, Ade Sukendar, India exported about 50,000 tonnes of rice last year. It is looking at importing more non-basmati rice from India.
  • Negotiations are on between the two countries to increase imports.
  • Total exports from Indonesia to India last year were to the tune of $13.72 billion and exports from India were to the tune of $5.01 billion.

EU Drags India to WTO

  • The European Union (EU) has dragged India into WTO's dispute settlement mechanism over imposition of import duties on certain ICT products, including mobiles, alleging breach of global trade norms. The EU is challenging the introduction of import duties on a wide range of ICT products, for instance mobile phones and components, base stations and integrated circuits.

RBI to Set Up Regulatory Sandbox

  • The governor of Reserve Bank of India Shaktikanta Das said that the central bank will set up a regulatory sandbox, for which guidelines will be issued in the next two months.
  • The objective is to have appropriate regulatory and supervisory frameworks to ensure an orderly development of fintech, to streamline their influence into the financial system, to protect the customers and to safeguard the interest of all the stakeholders.
  • The central bank's working group on fintech and digital banking suggested the introduction of a 'regulatory sandbox or innovation hub' within a well-defined space and duration to experiment with fintech solutions, where the consequences of failure can be contained and reasons for failure analysed.

ISRO to Launch a String of Defence Satellites

  • Between now and early 2020, the space above India looks set to see an unprecedented rush of satellites meant solely or mainly for the country's military.
  • Starting May, the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) plans to send up at least eight earth observation (EO) satellites of varied hues and at the rate of almost one a month.

A Mixed-gender T20 Match

  • The likes of Virat Kohli, Mithali Raj, Harmanpreet Kaur and Veda Krishnamurthy called on fans to support a unique mixed-gender T20 exhibition match, as part of a campaign launched by Royal Challenge Sports Drink.
  • Apart from the above four, the teams will be made up of more Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) and international women cricketers.

Ultimate Kho Kho League

  • According to the Kho Kho Federation of India, the Ultimate Kho Kho League, featuring eight teams consisting of national and international players and played on a double round-robin league format, has been proposed to be staged in two cities in September-October this year.
  • Union Sports Minister Col. Rajyavardhan Rathore congratulated the organisers on their attempt to promote the indigenous game.
  • Kho Kho is played in every school in rural areas. It is a game that does not require any equipment. You only need speed and agility.

  • Congress president Rahul Gandhi said that the party had constructed alliances across the country and was open to one when asked whether there would be a tie-up with the Aam Aadmi Party.

India Urges Pakistan to Repatriate Fishermen

  • India urged Pakistan to provide consular access to fishermen and prisoners who require consular and medical support. As per the Ministry of External Affairs, India had assisted Pakistan in such cases but Islamabad had not reciprocated. There are 385 Indian fishermen whose nationality has been conveyed to Pakistan and who have been languishing in Pakistan jails. It is requested that urgent and concrete steps be taken to repatriate them to India at the earliest, along with their boats.

Call for Lok Sabha Elections Boycott

  • An umbrella organisation of major civil societies and student associations in Mizoram decided to boycott the April 11 election to the lone Mizoram Lok Sabha seat and organise a state-wide indefinite bandh from April 8.
  • The NGO Coordination Committee said that a decision was taken earlier to boycott the Parliamentary polls if special polling booths are established at the Mizoram-Tripura border Kanhmun village.
  • The EC is setting up 15 exclusive polling booths in the village for Bru refugees from Mizoram who are housed in six camps in neighbouring Tripura. The step had been taken in the November 2018 Mizoram assembly polls too.

Sale of MH 60 Romeo Seahawk Helicopters

  • The US has approved the sale of 24 multi-role MH-60 Romeo Seahawk helicopters to India at an estimated cost of USD2.4 billion.
  • India has been in need of these formidable anti-submarine hunter helicopters for more than a decade.
  • Designed for hunting submarines as well as knocking out ships and conducting search-and-rescue operations at sea, the Lockheed Martin-built helicopters, would replenish India's aging fleet of British-made Sea King helicopters.

CBSE to Hire Retired Government Officers

  • The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has decided to form a panel of retired senior government officers from where officials can be appointed as enquiry officers for conducting departmental inquiries.
  • The panel will be valid for a period of three years and the number of disciplinary cases assigned to an inquiry officer will be restricted to eight cases in a year with not more than 4 cases at a time.
  • CBSE proposes to prepare a panel of retired officers of the central government, state government and PSUs who retired from the post of Additional Secretary, Joint Secretary, Director and Deputy Secretary or equivalent rank, to be appointed as inquiry officer.

Book on Rafale Deal

  • The Election Commission (EC) stopped the release of a book on the controversial Rafale deal, citing an apparent violation of the Model Code of Conduct (MCC) before the Lok Sabha poll.
  • The release of the book was to be chaired by N. Ram, the Managing Director of the Hindu Group. It is to be noted that Ram has himself written many news reports on the deal for French-made fighter jets.
  • The book titled "Rafale: The Scam That Rocked The Nation" is written by S. Vijayan.
