Denis Law, Manchester United & Scotland Legend, Dies

Denis Law, the iconic Scottish footballer renowned for his prolific goal-scoring and charismatic presence, passed away at the age of 84. Affectionately dubbed "The King" and "The Lawman," Law's illustrious career left an indelible mark on both Manchester United and the Scotland national team.
He began his professional career with Huddersfield Town in 1956, where his talent quickly became evident. In 1960, he moved to Manchester City for a British record transfer fee of £55,000, showcasing his goal-scoring prowess. A subsequent transfer to Torino in 1961 further highlighted his versatility and adaptability in European football.
On the international stage, Law earned 55 caps for Scotland between 1958 and 1974, scoring 30 goals—a record he shares with Kenny Dalglish. He represented Scotland in the 1974 FIFA World Cup, further cementing his status as a national icon.

P. Jayachandran, affectionately known as "Bhava Gayakan," was a celebrated playback singer whose voice resonated deeply with emotions such as love, devotion, and longing. He passed away at the age of 80 after a prolonged illness. Known for his soulful renditions across multiple languages, Jayachandran's death has left an irreplaceable void in the Indian music industry.
His extensive contribution to the world of music spanned over six decades, with more than 16,000 songs in Malayalam, Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, and Hindi. His passing is mourned by music lovers and fans alike, with tributes pouring in from across the nation.

Eminent playback Singer P. Jayachandran Passes Away

Renowned playback singer P. Jayachandran, affectionately called 'Bhava Gayakan' for his soulful renditions that beautifully expressed emotions such as love, longing, and devotion died. He was 80.
The singer recorded over 16,000 songs in Malayalam, Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, and Hindi in a career spanning over five decades.
He had won the national award for the best male playback singer in 1986. In 2020, he was conferred with the J C Daniel Award in recognition for his contributions to Malayalam cinema. He had also won state film awards in Kerala five times and two times in Tamil Nadu.

Pandey Appointed Revenue Secretary

The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC) approved the appointment of Tuhin Kanta Pandey as the Secretary, Department of Revenue, Ministry of Finance.
Pandey is currently serving as the Secretary, Department of Investment and Public Asset Management (DIPAM).
Simultaneously, Arunish Chawla, presently the Secretary, Department of Revenue, Ministry of Finance, was appointed as the Secretary, DIPAM, succeeding Pandey.

Veteran journalist, Filmmaker, Poet Pritish Nandy Dies

Veteran journalist, poet, film producer and former Rajya Sabha MP Pritish Nandy died in Mumbai at the age of 73.
Born in Bihar's Bhagalpur in 1951, Nandy pioneered The Illustrated Weekly of India, revitalising its form and content, and hosted the hugely popular The Pritish Nandy Show on Doordarshan, with his 1985 interview of singer Kishore Kumar known for being one of the rare few that opened up the artist.
Nandy was also known for his poetry, winning the Padma Shri for his contribution to literature in 1977. Nandy wrote around 40 books of poetry in English and translated poems from Bengali, Urdu and Punjabi into English.

French Far-right Politician Jean-Marie Le Pen Dies

Jean-Marie Le Pen, a towering yet controversial figure in French politics, passed away at the age of 96, leaving behind a legacy that has significantly influenced the far-right landscape in France. He was the founder and long-time leader of the National Front (now National Rally).
Le Pen's political career was defined by his provocative stances on immigration, nationalism, and Euroscepticism. His rhetoric often included xenophobic and antisemitic remarks, which made him a polarising figure both in France and internationally.

World's Oldest Person, Tomiko Itooka, Dies at 116 Years

Tomiko Itooka, a Japanese woman recognised by Guinness World Records as the world's oldest person, passed away at the age of 116 in January 2025. Born in May 1908, she experienced an extraordinary life, living through major historical events, including both World Wars, technological advancements, and societal changes. Her legacy continues to inspire through her resilience and longevity.
She managed her husband's textile factory office during World War II. She lived alone in Nara after her husband's death in 1979.
Tomiko married at age 20 and had two daughters and two sons. She was survived by one son, one daughter, and five grandchildren.
She was verified as the world's oldest person in September 2024, following the passing of Maria Branyas Morera, the previous record holder. She received the official Guinness World Records (GWR) certificate in September 2024.
She was honoured during Japan's Respect for the Aged Day, a national holiday dedicated to celebrating and recognising the contributions of elderly citizens.

Former Greek Prime Minister Simitis Passes Away

Former Greek Prime Minister Costas Simitis, who ushered the country into the European Union's single currency in 2001, died aged 88.
Simitis, a law professor and a reformist, assumed leadership of the PASOK socialist party in 1996 and was Prime Minister until 2004.
