South Africa's Tshego Gaelae Becomes First Black Woman to Win Mrs. World

  • South Africa's Tshego Gaelae was crowned Mrs. World 2025, becoming the first black woman to win the title in the competition's 40-year history.
  • The 33-year-old model from Soweto was crowned in Las Vegas, beating contenders from Sri Lanka and Thailand.
  • This victory follows in the footsteps of Candice Abrahams, who became the first South African to claim the global crown in 2016. As Mrs. World 2025, Gaelae will embark on a global tour, using her platform to make a positive impact on the lives of women around the world.

Former German President Horst Kohler dies

  • Horst Kohler, who became Germany's President after being a financial engineer behind the reunification of Germany and the creation several decades later of the euro currency, died in Berlin. He was 81.
  • Despite having served as Managing Director of the International Monetary Fund, Kohler was little known politically in Germany before becoming the country's President in 2004. Yet, he rose to popularity after taking office, serving much of his nearly six years alongside Chancellor Angela Merkel.
  • In 2010, a year into his second term, Kohler resigned abruptly amid a barrage of criticism over remarks he made about German soldiers serving in Afghanistan and on peacekeeping missions.
  • It was the first time in four decades that a German President had quit the post.

Navin Chawla, Former Chief Election Commissioner, Passes Away

  • Former Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Navin Chawla, who oversaw the 2009 Lok Sabha elections, passed away in Delhi. He was 79.
  • A retired 1969-batch IAS officer of Arunachal Pradesh-Goa-Mizoram and Union Territory (AGMUT) cadre, he assumed office as an election commissioner in May 2005, and served in that role till April 20, 2009, after which he served as Chief Election Commissioner till July 29, 2010.

Narendra Chapalgaonkar, Retired Judge of the Bombay High Court Passes Away

  • Narendra Chapalgaonkar, a retired judge of the Bombay High Court and a respected author, passed away at the age of 87. He was a significant figure in the Marathwada region, known for his contributions to literature, law, and social thought. As a distinguished judge, academic, and author, he left a lasting legacy in the fields of law, literature, and social history.
  • Chapalgaonkar had a deep interest in philosophy, social history, politics, and the judiciary, and authored numerous books on these subjects. One of his most notable works was the biography of Swami Ramanand Tirtha, a freedom fighter and leader of the Hyderabad liberation struggle.
  • Chapalgaonkar received the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Maharashtra Foundation, among other honours, recognising his contributions to literature and society.
