India Begins Trishul 2025 Tri-Service Combat Exercise Along Pakistan Border

  • India has launched its annual tri-Service combat exercise Trishul, massive wargames involving all three defence services, i.e. the Army, the Navy and the Air Force, along the western front with Pakistan.
  • The Trishul exercise came just days after Defence Minister Rajnath Singh warned Pakistan over its military build-up near the Sir Creek region.
  • India has issued a NOTAM (notice to airmen) instructing all aircraft to avoid the airspace along the Rajasthan and Gujarat border from October 30 to November 10.

India Raises Bhairav Battalions for Rapid Strike Missions

  • The Indian Army is undergoing a bold transformation with the introduction of 25 Bhairav Battalions, a new class of elite units designed to operate between the regular infantry and the Special Forces. These "lean and mean" battalions will focus on surprise strikes, counter-insurgency operations, reconnaissance, and high-mobility missions, especially along India's volatile borders with China and Pakistan. The creation of these battalions is part of a broader military modernisation push aimed at boosting rapid response capability and strategic depth.
  • First announced by Army Chief General Upendra Dwivedi in July 2025, the Bhairav Battalions represent a hybrid combat model. Unlike the small Ghatak Platoons that operate within each infantry battalion (about 20 soldiers each), the Bhairav Battalions will be larger — about 250 soldiers per unit — and specially trained for terrain-specific missions.

The Navy's focus on enhancing combat capabilities, interoperability, and joint Operations with Indian Army, IAF, and ICG underscores its resolve to deter emerging threats and showcase maritime prowess in the IOR and Indo-Pacific.
  • The conference serves as a platform for close interaction with national leadership and bureaucrats, and fine tune Navy's outlook towards mitigating multi-dimensional challenges in current geo-strategic environment.
