Alaknanda: An Ancient Milky Way‑Like Galaxy Found by Indian Scientists

Pune, 4 December 2025: Indian scientists announced the discovery of a galaxy named Alaknanda, ancient and massive with clear spiral arms. Formed about 1.5 billion years after the Big Bang, it is notable for its well‑defined structure, reminiscent of the Milky Way. National Centre for Radio Astrophysics researchers, led by Yogesh Wadadekar of TIFR, described the galaxy as a rare find offering insights into early galaxy formation. The discovery broadens knowledge of cosmic evolution and demonstrates India’s growing role in space science collaboration and radio astronomy.

India Wins Medals at the International Junior Science Olympiad 2025

Sirius, 4 December 2025: India won two gold and four silver medals at the 22nd International Junior Science Olympiad (IJSO), held in Sirius, Russia. The six‑member Indian team included Aadish Jain (Haryana), Anmol Kumar (Punjab), Asmi Imandar (Maharashtra), Sai Sarvan Muvvala (Telangana), Ruhan Mohanty (Bhubaneswar), and Tejas SV (Tamil Nadu). Aadish and Anmol won gold medals, while the other four secured silver. The event gathered participants from 24 countries, with theory and practical rounds. The performance reflects India’s growing strength in junior science and STEM education on a global stage.

Chandigarh Hosts Curtain-raiser to IISF

  • Panchkula is set to host the 11th India International Science Festival (IISF 2025) at the Dussehra Ground from Dec 6 to 9. A curtain-raiser to the mega science fest was held at the Met Centre in Chandigarh's Sector 39. The aim was to generate awareness and public excitement about IISF 2025.
  • The festival, one of the country's largest science outreach events, aims to celebrate science, promote innovation, and provide a platform for students, researchers, industry experts, and the general public to interact with leading scientific organisations.tnn

Wipro Acquires HARMAN's Digital Transformation Solutions Unit

  • IT services company Wipro's $375-million acquisition of HARMAN's Digital Transformation Solutions (DTS) business unit wasa completed following regulatory nods.
  • The acquisition of DTS marks a significant milestone in Wipro's commitment to advance AI capabilities, engineering innovation and R&D excellence.
  • Under the agreement, more than 5,600 DTS employees, including senior leadership, across the Americas, Europe, and Asia, will move to Wipro.

NCPOR Becomes the Anchor of India's Polar and Oceanic Exploration

  • The National Centre for Polar and Ocean Research (NCPOR) has become the anchor of India's polar and oceanic exploration, said Pusapati Ashok Gajapathi Raju, Governor of Goa, while speaking at the Antarctica Day celebrations at the NCPOR campus at Vasco-da-Gama. Antarctica Day is celebrated worldwide to commemorate the signing of the Antarctica Treaty on December 1, 1959. The treaty designates Antarctica as a continent exclusively reserved for peace and scientific research.
  • The Governor, who graced the occasion as the Chief Guest, also released a special commemorative postage stamp marking the Silver Jubilee of the establishment of the NCPOR.

Russia Launches Soyuz MS-28 with Three Astronauts to ISS

  • A Soyuz-2.1a carrier rocket was launched from the Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan, sending the Soyuz MS-28 spacecraft with two Russian cosmonauts and one U.S. astronaut to the International Space Station (ISS).
  • The crew includes Russian commander Sergei Kud-Sverchkov, making his second spaceflight, fellow Russian cosmonaut Sergei Mikayev, and NASA astronaut Christopher Williams, both flying to space for the first time.
  • For the first time, the crew's work on the ISS will integrate the GigaChat neural network, a large-scale generative AI model developed by Russia's largest bank, Sberbank.
  • The mission is scheduled to last 242 days, with a planned return to Earth in summer 2026. During this period, more than 40 experiments will be conducted under the Russian program, with two spacewalks planned for April and June 2026.

Centre for Development of Telematics (C-DOT) Signs MoU with Indian Institute of Technology, Roork...

  • The Centre for Development of Telematics (C-DOT), a premier R&D centre of the Department of Telecommunications (DoT), Ministry of Communications, Government of India, signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Indian Institute of Technology Roorkee (IITR), a leading institution of national importance.  
  • As part of the MOU, C-DOT is setting up a Centre of Excellence (CoE) at IIT Roorkee. The primary objective of C-DOT Centre of Excellence (CoE) at IIT Roorkee, is to accelerate indigenous research, innovation and capacity building in advanced communication technologies. CoE will have a strong focus on research in the areas of wireless communication, Quantum technologies, Cyber security and AI based applications. Establishing CoE will promote academia–industry synergy leveraging academic expertise of IITR and industry strength of C-DOT and enable students, researchers, and start-ups to contribute to India's innovation and self-reliance journey.

PM Modi to Launch Skyroot's Multi-Launch Vehicle Facility

  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated Indian space start-up Skyroot's Infinity Campus via video conferencing. He also unveiled Skyroot's first orbital rocket, Vikram-I, with the capability to launch satellites to orbit. The Infinity Campus spans around 200,000 square feet and boasts the capacity to build one orbital rocket every month.
  • Skyroot is India's leading private space company, founded by Pawan Chandana and Bharath Dhaka, both alumni of the Indian Institutes of Technology and former scientists of ISRO turned entrepreneurs. In November 2022, Skyroot launched its sub-orbital rocket, Vikram-S, becoming the first Indian private company to launch a rocket to space.
