Justice Harpreet Singh Brar Appointed as Permanent Judge Of Punjab & Haryana High Court
The President appointed Justice Harpreet Singh Brar as a permanent judge of the Punjab & Haryana High Court. Justice Brar was sworn in as an Additional Judge of Punjab and Haryana High Court in April 2023. Hailing from the village of Phulewala in District Sri Muktsar Sahib, Justice Brar served as Additional Advocate General of Punjab from 2009 to 2014. He also served as Panel Counsel for various state agencies, including the Punjab Urban Planning & Development Authority, Greater Mohali Area Development Authority, Punjab Pollution Control Board, and Punjab State Civil Supplies Corporation, among others.
Supreme Court to Have 3 CJIs & 7 Retirements in 2025
In 2025, the Supreme Court will be functioning under three Chief Justices and witness a wave of retirements- a total of seven.
The incumbent Chief Justice of India, Justice Sanjiv Khanna, is set to demit office on May 13, 2025. The next in line to be the CJI is Justice B. R. Gavai, who will have a term till November 23. Justice Surya Kant is in line to take over the mantle after Justice Gavai's retirement as the CJI.

Odisha Govt. Reconstitutes State Law Commission
The Odisha State Government reconstituted the Odisha State Law Commission (OSLC) in pursuant to the resolution of the Government of Odisha in the Law Department published in the State Gazette in March, 2016. Justice Biswanath Rath, former Judge of the Orissa High Court was appointed as the Chairperson of the Commission.
Surya Prakash Mishra, Sr. Advocate and Soura Chandra Mohapatra, were appointed as Members of the Odisha State Law Commission.

G. Narendar New Chief Justice of Uttarakhand High Court
The Central government notified the appointment of Andhra Pradesh High Court judge Justice G. Narendar as the Chief Justice of Uttarakhand High Court.
Justice Narendar was appointed as a jujdge of the Karnataka High Court in January 2015. He was transferred to the Andhra Pradesh High Court in October 2023.
Centre Clears Appointment of Justice G.S. Sandhawalia as Himachal Pradesh High Court Chief Justice
The Central government cleared the appointment of Justice Gurmeet Singh Sandhawalia as the Chief Justice of Himachal Pradesh High Court.
In July, the Supreme Court collegium had recommended the appointment of Justice Sandhawalia of the Punjab and Haryana High Court as Chief Justice of the Himachal Pradesh High Court.

Former Supreme Court Judge Madan Lokur to Chair UN Internal Justice Council
Retired Supreme Court judge Madan Lokur was appointed chairperson of the United Nations Internal Justice Council.
The Internal Justice Council comprises five members appointed by the Secretary-General. The other four members on the list are Carmen Artigas (Uruguay), Rosalie Balkin (Australia), Stefan Brezina (Austria) and Jay Pozenal (United States of America).
They would be responsible for handling the administration of the UN's internal justice system, which includes the Office of Staff Legal Assistance (OSLA), the UN Dispute Tribunal (UNDT) and the UN Appeals Tribunal (UNAT).
Ex-SC Judge Sanjay Kaul Appointed Member of Bahrain International Commercial Court
Retired Supreme Court judge Sanjay Kishan Kaul was appointed a member of the Bahrain International Commercial Court by King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa.
He is among the nine members appointed to the newly established BICC. Leading arbitrator Jan Paulsson was appointed as BICC president and former British judge Sir Christopher Greenwood as its vice president.
The BICC is a part of the Bahrain government's "Team Bahrain" to enhance private sector investment in the country by providing a forum for dispute resolution between parties.
The BICC will have exclusive jurisdiction within the country to hear international commercial disputes and will also be empowered to hear arbitration-related matters.

Gauhati High Court Bans Buffalo and Bulbul Fights in Assam
Animal rights organisation PETA welcomed the Gauhati High Court order banning buffalo and bulbul fights in Assam throughout the year. The High Court struck down a Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) issued by the state government last year (2023) that permitted these activities during the Bhogali Bihu festival in January.
