Scientists achieved an extraordinary scientific milestone in the Maldives with the discovery of a new damselfish species named Chromis abadhah. This groundbreaking finding was the result of an international collaboration of marine scientists, who uncovered the species inhabiting the deep-sea coral reefs in the mesophotic zone of the Maldives. The discovery adds to the country's rich marine biodiversity and highlights the importance of global scientific partnerships in exploring uncharted marine ecosystems.
Named by the Marine Research Institute as Chromis abadhah, the term "abadhah" signifies "perpetual" in Dhivehi, symbolising the enduring nature of the ocean.
The naming honours the Rolex Perpetual Planet initiative, which supported the expedition.

Cyclone Fengal Weakens
Cyclone Fengal, which made landfall along the Puducherry-Tamil Nadu coast, weakened into a deep depression, but heavy rainfall under its influence caused flooding in several parts of Puducherry and parts of Tamil Nadu.
There are six Regional Specialised Meteorological Centres (RSMCs) worldwide and five regional Tropical Cyclone Warning Centres, which are mandated for issuing advisories and naming of cyclonic storms.
Names are used in rotation and are not reused once assigned to a cyclone. For example, following Fengal, the next cyclone will be named Shakhti, as suggested by Sri Lanka, while Thailand has contributed Montha as a future name in the queue.
The name 'Fengal' was proposed by Saudi Arabia and is a word rooted in Arabic. It represents a blend of linguistic tradition and cultural identity, reflecting the regional diversity within the WMO/UNESCAP naming panel.
