President Questions if Supreme Court Can Impose Deadlines on President, Governor for Bill Assent

  • In a rare move, the President of India Droupadi Murmu under Article 143 (1) of the Constitution of India sent a reference to the Supreme Court following its ruling that set timelines for Governors and the President to grant assent to bills passed by legislatures.
  • Article 143(1) of the Constitution allows the President to seek the Supreme Court's opinion in matters of legal and public importance. The top court will now have to set up a Constitution Bench for answering the reference.
  • In particular, President Murmu has questioned Supreme Court's direction that there would be a deemed consent in case of failure to abide by the timeline set by it for grant assent to the bills.

CJI Sanjiv Khanna Retires

  • Chief Justice of India Sanjiv Khanna retired, marking the end of his tenure as the 51st Chief Justice of the Supreme Court.
  • He assumed office on November 10, 2024, and retired after serving in the apex position for six months.
  • The Supreme Court Bar Association bid farewell to the outgoing Chief Justice in a formal ceremony, during which Justice Khanna delivered his farewell address.

Justice Surya Kant Appointed as NALSA Executive Chairman

  • Justice Surya Kant, a sitting judge of the Supreme Court of India, was appointed as the new Executive Chairman of the National Legal Services Authority (NALSA) by the President of India. His appointment, effective from May 14, 2025. Justice Kant will now spearhead the national mission to provide free legal aid and promote access to justice for the underprivileged.

Second National Lok Adalat of 2025 Held across 28 states and UTs

  • The second National Lok Adalat of 2025 was organised across 28 States and Union Territories (UTs) on May 10 under the aegis of the National Legal Services Authority (NALSA).
  • In some states and UTs where courts remain closed due to summer vacations, the Lok Adalat will be held on later dates. These include Assam, Kerala, Puducherry, Tamil Nadu and Telangana on June 14; Andaman and Nicobar Islands on June 21, Andhra Pradesh on July 5 and Gujarat & Karnataka on July 12.
  • The National Lok Adalat addressed a wide range of disputes at both pre-litigation and pending stages, including:
  • Criminal compoundable offenses, Traffic challans, Plea bargaining, Revenue cases, Bank recovery matters, Motor accident claims, Cheque dishonour cases, Labour disputes, Matrimonial disputes (excluding divorce cases), Land acquisition cases, Intellectual property rights (IPR) matters and Consumer matters and other civil cases.

In A Historic First, Supreme Court Publishes Declaration of Judges' Assets on Website

  • In a significant step towards transparency and boosting public confidence in the judiciary, the Supreme Court has uploaded the assets and liabilities of the Judges on its website.
  • This is the first time in history that the assets' declarations of the Supreme Court Judges were made public. Presently, the declarations of Chief Justice of India Sanjiv Khanna, and twenty other judges, including the three judges who are next in line to be the CJI in the near future, were uploaded.
