Second National Lok Adalat of 2025 Held across 28 states and UTs

  • The second National Lok Adalat of 2025 was organised across 28 States and Union Territories (UTs) on May 10 under the aegis of the National Legal Services Authority (NALSA).
  • In some states and UTs where courts remain closed due to summer vacations, the Lok Adalat will be held on later dates. These include Assam, Kerala, Puducherry, Tamil Nadu and Telangana on June 14; Andaman and Nicobar Islands on June 21, Andhra Pradesh on July 5 and Gujarat & Karnataka on July 12.
  • The National Lok Adalat addressed a wide range of disputes at both pre-litigation and pending stages, including:
  • Criminal compoundable offenses, Traffic challans, Plea bargaining, Revenue cases, Bank recovery matters, Motor accident claims, Cheque dishonour cases, Labour disputes, Matrimonial disputes (excluding divorce cases), Land acquisition cases, Intellectual property rights (IPR) matters and Consumer matters and other civil cases.

In A Historic First, Supreme Court Publishes Declaration of Judges' Assets on Website

  • In a significant step towards transparency and boosting public confidence in the judiciary, the Supreme Court has uploaded the assets and liabilities of the Judges on its website.
  • This is the first time in history that the assets' declarations of the Supreme Court Judges were made public. Presently, the declarations of Chief Justice of India Sanjiv Khanna, and twenty other judges, including the three judges who are next in line to be the CJI in the near future, were uploaded.

Centre Notifies Appointment of 7 Judicial Officers as Gujarat High Court Judges

  • The Central government notified the appointment of seven judicial officers as judges of the Gujarat High Court.
  • The judicial officers who have been appointed as judges are: Liyakathussain Shamsuddin Pirzada, Ramchandra Thakurdas Vachhani, Jayesh Lakhanshibhai Odedra, Pranav Maheshbhai Raval, Mool Chand Tyagi, Dipak Mansukhlal Vyas and Utkarsh Thakorbhai Desai.
  • Last month (April) the Supreme Court collegium had recommended the appointment of 'eight' judicial officers as judges of the Gujarat High Court. Judicial officer Rohenkumar Kundanlal Chudawala whose name was recommended by the Supreme Court collegium for appointment last month, was however not part of the announcement made by the Centre.

President Droupadi Murmu Appoints Justice B. R. Gavai as Next Chief Justice

  • President Droupadi Murmu appointed Justice B. R. Gavai as the 52nd Chief Justice of India.
  • Justice Gavai will take the oath of office on May 14 after the incumbent CJI Sanjiv Khanna retires.
  • He has a tenure of more than six months and will retire on November 23, 2025.
  • He will be the second person from the Scheduled Caste community to become CJI. The first was Justice K. G. Balakrishnan.

Arun Bhardwaj New Registrar General of Delhi High Court

  • The Delhi High Court ordered the appointment of Special Judge Kaveri Baweja of the Rouse Avenue Court, who has handled multiple important cases, including the Delhi excise policy case in which former CM Arvind Kejriwal was arrested, as the Registrar (Vigilance) at the High Court.
  • Along with the excise policy case, in which she had remanded Kejriwal to the custody of the Enforcement Directorate and had denied regular bail to former Deputy CM Manish Sisodia, she also heard various other significant matters.
