India Ranks 39th in the Travel and Tourism Development Index 2024 (3)

  • The World Economic Forum (WEF) released its Travel and Tourism Development Index (TTDI) for 2024, offering a comprehensive evaluation of India's standing in the global tourism landscape. This index is a crucial benchmark for assessing the competitiveness and sustainability of tourism sectors worldwide.
  • India has secured the 39th position among 119 countries in the 2024 TTDI. This ranking reflects India's overall performance across various indicators that contribute to a robust and sustainable tourism sector.
  • The United States topped the index with a score of 5.24, followed by Spain with a score of 5.18.

India International Hospitality Expo 2024

  • The India International Hospitality Expo (IHE) 2024, set to take place from August 3 to 6 at India Expo Centre & Mart, Greater Noida, Delhi NCR, is on track to become a landmark event in the hospitality sector. With over 1000 exhibitors and an anticipated attendance of more than 20,000 B2B buyers, this seventh edition promises to be a significant event, showcasing a wide range of products and services from luxury hotels, resorts, restaurants, and more.
  • IHE 2024 is enhanced by its co-location with four major hospitality-related events: Catering Asia, Tent Décor Asia, and AYURYOG EXPO. This integration provides a comprehensive solution for diverse industry needs, offering insights into the latest trends and technologies while facilitating valuable connections.
  • Vietnam has been designated as the Partner Country for this edition, bringing a cross-cultural dimension to the event.

Port Blair Seaport Now Allows E-visa Entry, Boosting Andaman's Yacht Tourism Potential

  • The Ministry of Home Affairs approved Port Blair seaport in Andaman and Nicobar Islands as an authorised Integrated Check Posts (ICP) for entry of foreign nationals holding e-visa.
  • Apart from Port Blair in Andaman and Nicobar Islands, now anyone holding an e-visa will be allowed to enter India at five other major Indian seaports including Mumbai, Cochin in Kerala, Mormugao in Goa, Chennai in Tamil Nadu and New Mangalore in Karnataka, the order said.

Indian Destinations on TIME's 'World's Greatest Places of 2024'

  • The TIME magazine published its prestigious list of the 'World's Greatest Places' for 2024, throwing light on 100 extraordinary destinations to visit and stay. Three Indian destinations have been named on the list.
  • Museum of Solutions (MuSo), a unique children's museum in Mumbai, Manam Chocolate, a factory in Hyderabad, and NAAR, a restaurant in Himachal Pradesh were recognised in the prestigious list.

World's most Powerful Passports 2024

  • London-based global citizenship and residence advisory firm Henley & Partners released the list of the world's most powerful passports. As per the Henley Passport Index 2024 July Global Ranking, Singapore held the top position, providing visa-free access to 195 countries. The second position was shared by five countries: France, Germany, Italy, Japan, and Spain, which provide visa-free access to 192 countries.
  • India was ranked at 82nd spot along with Senegal and Tajikistan giving visa-free access to 58 countries. Maldives, whose relations with India have been under strain since November 2023, was ranked 58th, with its citizens having visa-free access to 96 countries. China was ranked at 59th position, as the country grants visa-free access to 85 countries. At the bottom of the list was Afghanistan, which gives its citizens visa-free access to just 26 countries.

Next Tourism Destination to be in East: from UP, Focus Shifts to Bihar, Odisha

  • While Bihar got the biggest share of the tourism pie in the Union Budget 2024-25 with the development of Vishnupad temple in Gaya, Mahabodhi temple in Bodhgaya, along with Nalanda and Rajgir finding a pride of place in Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman's Budget speech, a plan for an overall development of tourism sites in Odisha was also announced. The BJP formed its first government in Odisha.
  • While Uttar Pradesh got maximum focus in Narendra Modi government's previous terms, with Ayodhya and Varanasi getting an overhaul with the redevelopment of temples and upgradation of ground infrastructure, the tilt seems to have moved eastwards to Bihar and Odisha, along with the party's political ambitions and successes.
