Andhra CM Naidu Announces Welfare Package for Municipal Workers

  • Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu introduced a groundbreaking Rs. 1 crore accident insurance coverage for regular municipal workers, marking a significant enhancement in welfare benefits for frontline staff.
  • The announcement came during the Swarnandhra-Swachhandhra program in Peddapuram, Kakinada district, where the CM emphasised the coalition government's commitment to protecting the health and security of workers essential to public hygiene.
  • Developed in partnership with the Urban Development Department and Axis Bank, the scheme extends comprehensive financial support to all categories of employees — permanent, outsourced, and contract — across 123 urban local bodies. It covers 55,686 workers, including 39,170 in public health and 16,516 in other divisions.
  • For permanent workers, the package includes Rs. 1 crore for accidental death or permanent disability, plus Rs. 10 lakh life insurance. Outsourced staff will receive Rs. 20 lakh for accidents and Rs. 2 lakh life cover. Families affected by accidental deaths can also access up to Rs. 8 lakh for children's education.

West Bengal Launches 'Shramshree' Scheme for Returning Migrant Workers

  • West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee launched the Shramshree Scheme, a first-of-its-kind state welfare initiative aimed at supporting Bengali migrant workers returning home after facing alleged linguistic discrimination and harassment in other states. The scheme offers Rs. 5,000 monthly aid for up to one year or until the worker secures a new job within the state.

Rajya Sabha Passes Indian Ports Bill, 2025, Replaces Colonial-era Law

  • The Rajya Sabha passed the Indian Ports Bill, 2025, a sweeping reform designed to replace the Indian Ports Act, 1908, ending more than a century of colonial-era regulation and ushering in a modern framework for India's maritime sector, in Delhi. Earlier, the bill was proposed by the Union Minister of Ports, Shipping & Waterways (MoPSW), Sarbananda Sonowal for passing in the Upper House.
  • The legislation, already cleared by the Lok Sabha, will be sent for Presidential assent. Once enacted, it is expected to transform governance at Indian ports, strengthen Centre–State coordination for port-led development, and boost investor confidence in a sector crucial to the country's trade ambitions.

The Centre Launches the Pradhan Mantri Viksit Bharat Rozgar Yojana (PM-VBRY)

  • The central government led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched the employment incentive scheme Pradhan Mantri Viksit Bharat Rozgar Yojana (PM-VBRY). Speaking from the ramparts of Red Fort in Delhi, Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced that the employment scheme, offers financial support to both first-time job employees and the employers. The scheme will be operated by the Employees' Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO). As per the government announcement, the scheme has a budget total budget outlay of Rs. 99,446 crore and aims to create over 3.5 crore jobs in two years.

Two Sports Bills Passed amid Opposition Protests

  • The Rajya Sabha passed three major pieces of legislation, the National Sports Governance Bill, the National Anti-Doping (Amendment) Bill, 2025, and the Income Tax (No.2) Bill, 2025, marking a significant day for policy reforms in sports and taxation.
  • The Sports Governance Bill, introduced by Union Youth Affairs and Sports Minister Mansukh Mandaviya, is India's first comprehensive law to regulate the functioning of sports bodies. It aims to bring transparency, accountability, and athlete welfare into the heart of administration, in line with the Olympic and Paralympic charters and global best practices.
  • The new law establishes an independent National Sports Board (NSB) to oversee the Indian Olympic Association, National Sports Federations (NSFs), and other recognised sports organisations. It also creates a National Sports Tribunal, headed by a retired or sitting Chief Justice, for speedy resolution of disputes, and a National Sports Election Panel to ensure fair and transparent polls in sports bodies.
