Express Journalist Abhishek Angad Wins IIMCAA Award

  • The Indian Express journalist Abhishek Angad was named as a winner of the IIMCAA Awards 2024, conferred by the Indian Institute of Mass Communication Alumni Association (IIMCAA).
  • Angad won the 'Jury Special Mention' award in the 'Journalist of the Year' category. Angad is a Principal Correspondent at The Indian Express, covering the state of Jharkhand.

Jaipur to Host 25th Edition of IIFA Awards

  • Jaipur, the capital of Rajasthan, is set to host the prestigious 25th edition of the International Indian Film Academy (IIFA) Awards from March 7 to 9, 2025, at the JECC Sitapura. The announcement was made during a formal agreement signing ceremony at the iconic Albert Hall, attended by Deputy Chief Minister Diya Kumari. The Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed by Rajasthan Tourism Commissioner V. P. Singh and IIFA Vice President Suresh Iyer, marking the beginning of preparations for this grand event.
  • The Rajasthan government has allocated a total budget of Rs. 100 crore for the event. This includes ₹50 crore from the state government, Rs. 20 crore from the Rajasthan Industrial and Investment Corporation (RIICO), and Rs. 30 crore from the tourism department. Officials believe this large-scale event will significantly benefit the state's tourism and cultural industries.
  •  The 2025 IIFA Awards will introduce the inaugural IIFA Digital Awards, recognising achievements in digital entertainment, including films and OTT content. This new category reflects the growing impact of digital media in the entertainment industry.
  • Since their inception in 2000, the IIFA Awards have become a globally recognised platform for celebrating Indian cinema. With editions hosted in 14 countries and 18 cities, the 2025 edition in Jaipur will mark a significant milestone, celebrating 25 years of IIFA and the accomplishments of Indian cinema in the new millennium. The event will include performances by leading Bollywood celebrities and awards for the industry's finest.

Magnus Carlsen, Judit Polgar Felicitated at FIDE 100 Awards

  • Magnus Carlsen and Judit Polgar were felicitated with the best male and female player awards, respectively at the FIDE 100 Awards ceremony in Hungary.
  • The centenary of the International Chess Federation, celebrated the exceptional achievements and contributions of individuals, groups, and organizations within the chess community.
  • Over the past century, chess has evolved and flourished, and the event was all about honoring those who have made remarkable impacts on the game.
  • Judit Polgar is widely regarded as the strongest female chess player of all time.
  • She became a Grandmaster at 15, breaking Bobby Fischer's record, and was the youngest player to enter the FIDE top 100 at age 12.
  • She is the only woman to surpass a 2700 Elo rating, reaching a peak world ranking of No. 8 in 2004.
  • Magnus Carlsen is a Norwegian chess grandmaster and a five-time World Chess Champion.
  • He is also the reigning five-time World Rapid Chess Champion, seven-time World Blitz Chess Champion, and the winner of the FIDE World Cup.
  • Carlsen has held the No. 1 position in the FIDE world chess rankings since July 1, 2011, trailing only Garry Kasparov in time spent as the highest-rated player in the world. His peak rating of 2882 is the highest in history.

Gujarat Leads Awards at Global Renewable Energy Expo

  • Gujarat, also the host state, won the maximum number of awards during the three-day 4th Global Renewable Energy Investors Meet and Expo. This is the first time the meet was organised outside Delhi.
  • Gujarat was ranked among the top three states in multiple categories such as overall renewable energy capacity, solar power capacity and wind power capacity among others.
  • While Gujarat was ranked on top under overall renewable energy capacity achieved and overall wind power capacity achieved categories, it was ranked second under overall solar power capacity achieved as Rajasthan pipped Gujarat to be at the top.
  • Other top ranked states under these categories were Rajasthan (bagged two awards), Tamil Nadu (two) and Karnataka (two), Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand one each under overall hydro power capacity achievers category.

Aishwarya Rai Wins Best Actress at SIIMA 2024

  • At the South Indian International Movie Awards (SIIMA) 2024, Aishwarya Rai Bachhan stood out as she received the Best Actress (critics) Award for her role in Maniratnam's epic "Ponniyin Selvan 2".
  • Aishwarya Rai Bachchan played dual roles in 'Ponniyin Selvan 2', portraying both Nandini and Mandakini Devi.
  • The two-part film, directed by Mani Ratnam, is an adaptation of the famous Tamil novel 'Ponniyin Selvan' by Kalki Krishnamoorthy.
  • In addition to Aishwarya's win, her co-star Chiyaan Vikram also received a massive cheer, securing the Best Actor (Tamil) award at the ceremony. 'Ponniyin Selvan 2', the sequel to the 2022 blockbuster, continues the saga with its grand storytelling.

Rajbhasha Kirti Award to Department of Administrative Reforms and Public Grievances

  • During Hindi Diwas Celebrations at Bharat Mandapam, New Delhi, the Secretary of Administrative Reforms and Public Grievances (DARPG), V. Srinivas, was awarded the Rajbhasha Kirti Puraskar by Home Minister, Amit Shah.
  • This award recognised DARPG's exemplary performance in promoting the use of Hindi as the Official Language under the Ministry of Home Affairs for 2023-24. DARPG's commitment to implementing the Official Language Policy is reflected in its various initiatives, including monitoring language compliance and increasing Hindi usage across its sections and offices.
  • The department formed a Hindi Advisory Committee and an Official Language Implementation Committee to monitor the use of Hindi, with quarterly meetings to review progress. Quarterly Progress Reports (QPRs) and annual evaluation reports on Hindi usage are regularly submitted to the Department of Official Language.
