International Day for the Abolition of Slavery

  • The International Day for the Abolition of Slavery, observed annually on December 2, serves as a global call to action to combat modern forms of slavery. This day emphasises the eradication of human trafficking, forced labour, and other contemporary forms of exploitation while promoting the fundamental rights and dignity of individuals.
  • The United Nations General Assembly established this day to mark the adoption of the Convention for the Suppression of the Traffic in Persons and of the Exploitation of the Prostitution of Others on December 2, 1949. This landmark resolution aimed to address human trafficking and exploitation globally.
  • The theme for International Day for the Abolition of Slavery 2025 is 'Acknowledge the past. Repair the present. Build a future of dignity and justice'.

National Pollution Control Day

  • National Pollution Control Day is observed annually on December 2 to honour the memory of those who perished in the Bhopal Gas Tragedy of 1984. This observance seeks to raise awareness about the severe consequences of pollution affecting air, water, and soil while emphasising the need for preventive measures to avoid industrial disasters like the one in Bhopal.
  • On 2nd and 3rd December 1984 poisonous chemical MIC (Methyl Isocyanate) and some other chemicals were released from a pesticide plant UCIL (Union Carbide India Limited) in Bhopal, MP. The unfortunate accident affected More than 500,000 people. Around 2259 died immediately and later MP government declared that around 25,000 died. In history worldwide Bhopal Gas Tragedy is identified as one of the biggest industrial disaster.
  • The National Pollution Control Day 2025 theme is 'Sustainable Living for a Greener Future', which focuses on promoting eco-friendly practices for environmental health and a sustainable future.

Nagaland Statehood Day

  • Nagaland celebrates its Statehood Day on December 1. Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla extended warm greetings to the people of the State, paying tribute to the resilience and aspirations of the Naga people.
  • After India's independence in 1947, the Naga-inhabited region remained part of Assam.
  • Rising nationalist sentiment among Naga tribes led to demands for autonomy and, at times, secession.
  • In 1957, the Naga Hills district of Assam and Tuensang Frontier Division were administratively merged under direct Central control.
  • In 1960, it was agreed that Nagaland would become a full-fledged state within the Indian Union.
  • In 1963 Nagaland formally became India's 16th state, and the first elected government assumed office in 1964.

World AIDS Day

  • Every year on December 1, World AIDS Day is commemorated to increase awareness of HIV and AIDS, provide support to individuals living with the infection, and honour the memory of those who have perished because of such illnesses.
  • It started in 1988 when the World Health Organisation (WHO) and the United Nations (UN) launched it. The objective was to spread awareness about HIV / AIDS, erase misconceptions, and build empathy for people living with HIV. This day reminds people around the world that AIDS is not only a health problem but also a social and humanitarian issue for which everyone should work together.
  • The theme for World AIDS Day 2025 is 'Overcoming disruption, transforming the AIDS response'.

International Day of Solidarity with Palestinian People

  • Every year, November 29 marks International Day of Solidarity with the Palestinian People, a date observed by the United Nations for over four decades.
  • On this day every year, the United Nations urges immediate action in an effort to grant Palestinians sovereignty and independence from the Israeli Occupation.
  • The annual observance was established in UN General Assembly Resolution 32/40 B in December 1977, to start in 1978.
