Madhav National Park in Madhya Pradesh Becomes India's 58th Tiger Reserve

  • The Centre declared the Madhav National Park in Madhya Pradesh as the country's 58th tiger reserve, with Union Environment Minister Bhupender Yadav making the announcement. The newly added national park was also the ninth from the state to get the recognition.
  • Located in the Shivpuri district in Chambal region, the reserve has five tigers at present, including the two cubs.

  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated and visited Vantara, the world's largest animal rescue, rehabilitation, and conservation centre, in Gujarat. Spread across 3,500 acres, Vantara is home to over 1.5 lakh rescued, endangered, and threatened animals, offering them a home away from home and a second chance at life.

Nepal's Rhino Census Becomes Uncertain with Suspension of USAID Funding

  • Nepal's rhino census conducted in an interval of every five years now faces an uncertain future with the suspension of USAID, one of the major donors for the project, by the Donald Trump administration.
  • The Department of National Parks and Wildlife Conservation, which has been carrying out the census in collaboration with various agencies working with the park, is now facing a financial crunch and is unable to continue the work.

India Has 6,327 River Dolphins, Finds First Population Survey

  • India has 6,324 Gangetic dolphins across the Ganga and Brahmaputra river basins and three Indus River dolphins in the Beas river basin in Punjab, the country's first-ever detailed dolphin population survey has found.
  • Conducted between 2021 and 2023, the survey covered 8,406 km long stretches of Ganga and Brahmaputra river basins, inclusive of its tributaries, and a 101 km long stretch of the Beas River.
  • PM Narendra Modi released the results of the dolphin population survey during the 7th meeting of National Board for Wildlife held at the Gir National Park.
  • The survey was done by Wildlife Institute of India, state forest departments of Punjab, UP, Bihar, Assam, Jharkhand, Rajasthan and non-profit organisations including Aaranyak, World Wildlife Fund, Turtle Survival Alliance and Wildlife Trust of India.

Cyclone Garance Hits French island of La Reunion

  • Cyclone Garance slammed into the French overseas territory of La Reunion with top wind speeds of 155 kph (96 mph), blowing away roofs and cutting power and access to drinking water for many residents.
  • The cyclone made landfall on the north of the Indian Ocean island, which lies off Madagascar.

Madhya Pradesh Now Home to India's Highest Vulture Population

  • Madhya Pradesh reported the highest number of vulture populations in the country after the conclusion of the first phase of the 2025 vulture census. According to the state Forest Department, the total number of vultures in the state was 12,981. In the last census, there were 10,845 vultures in the state.
  • The first phase of the 2025 vulture census was conducted by the Madhya Pradesh Forest Department in February 2025. The census was conducted across all the forested areas, national parks, tiger reserves and sanctuaries of the state.
  • The Forest Department has been conducting the vulture census in the state since 2016. In 2016 there were 6 thousand 999 vultures in the state.
  • The next census was conducted in 2018, 2019, 2021, 2024 and 2025.
