Grammy Awards 2024

  • Musicians Shankar Mahadevan, and Zakir Hussain made India proud on a global platform as their fusion band Shakti clinched the Grammy Awards for Best Global Music Album for their latest release, 'This Moment'. The 66th annual Grammy Awards 2024 were held in Los Angeles.
  • 'This Moment' features 8 songs created by John McLaughlin (guitar, guitar synth), Zakir Hussain (tabla), Shankar Mahadevan (vocalist), V. Selvaganesh (percussionist), and Ganesh Rajagopalan (violinist).
  • The Grammy Awards (stylized as GRAMMY), or simply known as the Grammys, are awards presented by the Recording Academy of the United States to recognise 'outstanding' achievements in the music industry.
  • They are regarded by many as the most prestigious and significant awards in the music industry worldwide. They were originally called the Gramophone Awards, as the trophy depicts a gilded gramophone.
  • The first award ceremony was held simultaneously in two locations on May 4, 1959, the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Beverly Hills, California, and the Park Sheraton Hotel in New York City, New York, with 28 Grammys awarded.

Maha Gaurav 2024 Award Presented to Nikhil Wagh

  • Nikhil Mukund Wagh, who works as a Public Relations Officer at Goa Shipyard Limited, was given the 'Maha Gaurav 2024' award. This award was handed to him by Ajit Pawar, the Deputy Chief Minister of Maharashtra. The award is a big deal because it recognised Nikhil's great work in public relations.

Bharat Ratna to Lal Krishna Advani

  • Lal Krishna Advani, a prominent leader of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the 7th Deputy Prime Minister, is set to be honoured with the prestigious 'Bharat Ratna' award, as announced by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
  • Advani served as the Information and Broadcasting Minister in the Janata Party in 1975 during the Morarji Desai government. A key figure alongside Atal Bihari Vajpayee, he played a pivotal role in establishing the BJP in 1980.
  • Notably, Advani gained prominence for leading the Ram Janmabhoomi movement in the 1990s, advocating for the construction of a temple at the disputed site in Ayodhya.
  • During the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) rule, Advani held significant positions as the deputy prime minister and home minister, contributing significantly to the government. In recent years, he has taken a step back from active political engagements due to health issues.

Centre Merges 4 Medals into One as 'Kendriya Grihmantri Dakshata Padak'

  • The Centre merged, with immediate effect, four existing Home Minister's medals to institute one new medal named 'Kendriya Grihmantri Dakshata Padak'.
  • The new medal is named after merging the Union Home Minister's Special Operation Medal, the Union Home Minister's Medal for Excellence in Investigation, Asadharan Aasuchana Kushalata Padak and the Union Home Minister's Awards for Meritorious Service in Forensic Science.
  • Additional Secretary Rakesh Kumar Singh said that the Union Home Minister is pleased to institute the Kendriya Grihmantri Dakshata Padak to be conferred on members of the police forces, security organisations and intelligence wing/branch/special branch of states/Union Territories, Central Police Organisations (CPOs), Central Armed Police Forces (CAPFs), National Security Guard/Assam Rifles, and Forensic Science (Central/State/Union Territories) throughout the Indian Union in consideration for excellence in operations in areas such as counter-terrorism, border action, arms control, Left Wing Extremism, prevention of narcotics smuggling and rescue operation.

Three young Indian Scientists Receive Prestigious UK Award

  • The UK named nine scientists, including three researchers of Indian descent, as recipients of a prestigious award for young scientists who are advancing science and improving the world. The UK's Blavatnik Awards for young scientists honour research in three categories—Chief Sciences, Physical Sciences & Engineering, and Life Sciences, that is revolutionising technology, medicine, and our understanding of the world.
  • The three researchers of Indian descent - Professors Rahul R. Nair, Mehul Malik, and Tanmay Bharat received grants totalling 480,000 pounds.

Filmfare Awards 2024

  • The 69th Filmfare Awards ceremony took place in Gandhinagar, Gujarat. The event featured hosting by Karan Johar, and performances by Kareena Kapoor, Karisma Kapoor, Varun Dhawan, and Kartik Aaryan among others.
  • Here is the list of some of the winners: Best Film (Popular): 12th Fail, Best Film (Critics): Joram, Best Actor in a Leading role (Male): Ranbir Kapoor (Animal), Best Actor in a Leading role (Female): Alia Bhatt (Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani), Best Actor (Critics): Vikrant Massey (12th Fail), Best Actress (Critics): Rani Mukerji (Mrs Chatterjee Vs Norway) and Shefali Shah (Three Of Us) and Best Director: Vidhu Vinod Chopra (12th Fail).
  • The Filmfare Awards are annual awards that honour artistic and technical excellence in the Hindi-language film industry of India. The Filmfare ceremony is one of the most famous film events in India. The awards were introduced by the Filmfare magazine of The Times Group in 1954, the same year as the National Film Awards. They were initially referred to as the 'Clare Awards' or 'The Clares' after Clare Mendonça, the editor of The Times of India and modelled after the Academy Awards.

President Presents Best Electoral Practices Awards for 2023

  • The President of India, Droupadi Murmu presented the Best Electoral Practices Awards for the year 2023 to the state and district level officers for their outstanding performance in the conduct of elections during 2023. Awards were also presented to important stakeholders including government departments, and media organisations for their valuable contribution towards voters' awareness.
  • Karnataka's IAS officers Shikha C. and Divya Prabhu GRJ received Election Commission's national award for demonstrating best electoral practices.
  • They were part of the state and district level officers the President honoured with the Best Electoral Practices awards for 2023 for their outstanding performance in the conduct of elections, last year (2023).
