Roberto Cavalli: Italian Fashion Designer Dies

  • Italian fashion designer Roberto Cavalli, known for his animal-print designs loved by show business stars, died at the age of 83.
  • Cavalli founded his label in the early 1970s.
  • Cavalli used bright colours and patchwork effects in his often revealing creations, and was an extroverted art lover.

Former NFL Star O.J. Simpson Dies

  • O. J. Simpson, who ran to fame on the football field, made fortunes as a Black all-American in movies, advertising and television and was acquitted of killing his former wife and her friend in a 1995 trial in Los Angeles that mesmerised the nation, died. He was 76.
  • In 2007, he was arrested after he and other men invaded a Las Vegas hotel room of some sports memorabilia dealers and took a trove of collectibles. He claimed that the items had been stolen from him, but a jury in 2008 found him guilty of 12 charges, including armed robbery and kidnapping, after a trial that drew only a smattering of reporters and spectators. He was sentenced to 9 to 33 years in a Nevada state prison. He served the minimum term and was released in 2017.
  • Over the years, the story of O. J. Simpson generated a tide of tell-all books, movies, studies and debate over questions of justice, race relations and celebrity in a nation that adores its heroes, especially those cast in rags-to-riches stereotypes, but has never been comfortable with its deeper contradictions.

Peter Higgs, Nobel Winner, Dies at 94

  • Nobel Prize-winning physicist Peter Higgs, who proposed the existence of the so-called "god particle" that helped explain how matter formed after the Big Bang, has died at age 94.
  • Higgs predicted the existence of a new particle, the so-called Higgs boson, in 1964. But it would be almost 50 years before the particle's existence could be confirmed at the Large Hadron Collider.
  • Higgs won the 2013 Nobel Prize in Physics for his work, alongside Francois Englert of Belgium, who independently came up with the same theory.

Pioneer of Dravidian Movement, Prominent Film Producer R. M. Veerappan Passes Away

  • He was 98. Veerappan had served as a minister in the former Chief Minister M. G. Ramachandran's Cabinet and was also in the Cabinets of late Chief Ministers: Janaki Ramachandran and J. Jayalalithaa.
  • One of the pioneers of the Dravidian movement and prominent Tamil film producer R. M. Veerappan died.
  • This Dravidian leader born on September 9, 1926, enjoyed good ties with DMK stalwart and former Chief Minister M Karunanidhi too. He launched the MGR Kazhagam party after quitting the AIADMK.
  • As a prolific producer, Veerappan ensured several hits in the Tamil film industry. His passion for Tamil made him president of the Chennai Kamban Kazhagam and he left his mark in literature too. In addition, he was also involved in spiritual activities.

Legendary Cinematographer Gangu Ramsay Passes Away at 83

  • Gangu Ramsay, the second-eldest son of FU Ramsay, passed away in Mumbai. He was 83 years old. Gangu Ramsay was a renowned cinematographer and filmmaker who was part of the iconic Ramsay Brothers banner. He contributed to over 50 iconic films under their production house.
  • Gangu Ramsay's filmography includes several horror classics like Veerana, Samri, Bandh Darwaza, Do Gaz Zameen Ke Niche, and Purana Mandir.
  • He also collaborated with other prominent actors and directors, such as Rishi Kapoor in Khoj and Saif Ali Khan in his debut film Ashiq Awara. Gangu Ramsay even worked with Akshay Kumar in the Khiladi franchise.

Olympic Champion Valerie Adams Ambassador for TCS World 10K Bengaluru 2024

  • Shot putter and two-time Olympic medalist, Valerie Adams, was named the International Event Ambassador for the 16th edition of the Tata Consultancy Services World 10K Bengaluru, to be held on April 28, 2024.
  • Valerie Adams from New Zealand is arguably the most successful female shot putter of all time. Across her five Olympic appearances, she has won two gold medals (in 2008 and 2012), a silver (in 2016), and a bronze medal (in 2020). Adams is also a four-time World Champion, four-time World Indoor Champion, and three-time Commonwealth Games winner.
  • She is the only woman to have won world championships at the youth, junior, and senior levels, and the first woman to win four consecutive individual titles at the World Championships. In 2014, Adams was honoured with the IAAF World Athlete of the Year title.

Britain's 'Hardest Geezer' Becomes First Person to Run Entire Length of Africa

  • Ultramarathoner Russ Cook, known as 'Hardest Geezer', from Worthing, West Sussex, United Kingdom became the first person to run the full length of Africa after he crossed the finish line in Ras Angela, Tunisia, the most northern point of the African continent, nearly a year after he started.
  • Cook not only became the first person to run the full length of Africa but also raised more than £600,000 ($758,280) for charity. 
  • He began his 16,000-kilometre journey, on April 22, 2023, from South Africa's most southerly point, Cape Agulhas and nearly a year later, he has run the distance of about 376 marathons.
  • Cook raised money for two charities, the Running Charity and Sandblast, through the Project Africa venture.

111-year-old Briton, World's New Oldest Man

  • The world's oldest living man, 111-year-old Briton John Tinniswood, said that his longevity was just luck and there was no special secret to his diet - although his favourite food was fish and chips every Friday.
  • Tinniswood, who has been retired for more than half a century, inherited the Guinness World Records title from Venezuelan Juan Vicente Perez Mora, 114, whose death was announced earlier in the first week of April.
  • Guinness World Records said in a statement that Tinniswood's claim to the record was assessed by its experts and by the Gerontology Research Group, which catalogues the world's confirmed "supercentenarians".
