Paul Auster, Author of 'New York Trilogy', Dies

  • Paul Auster, the prolific American novelist behind the acclaimed 'New York Trilogy', passed away. He was 77.
  • Auster works include the series "The New York Trilogy" (1987), comprised of "City of Glass" (1985), "Ghosts" (1986) and "The Locked Room" (1986). The trilogy explored various philosophical themes through a postmodern lens of detective and mystery fiction.
  • The author's longest and most ambitious work of fiction was 4 3 2 1, published in 2017 and a Booker finalist. The 800-plus page novel is a tale of quadraphonic realism in the post-World War II era, the parallel journeys of Archibald Isaac Ferguson from summer camp and high school baseball to student life in New York and Paris during the mass protests of the late 1960s.
  • Auster also penned the screenplays for "Smoke" (1995), "Blue in the Face" (1995), "Lulu on the Bridge" (1998) and "The Inner Life of Martin Frost" (2007), directing the latter two and co-directing "Blue in the Face" with Wayne Wang.

Playback Singer Uma Ramanan Bids Adieu

Yakshagana Exponent Subrahmanya Dhareshwar Passes Away

  • The world of Yakshagana, a traditional theatre form of Karnataka, lost a towering figure. Subrahmanya Dhareshwar, a senior and well-known Yakshagana 'bhagavatha' (background singer), passed away in Bengaluru. He was 66 years old.
  • Dhareshwar was a disciple of the legendary Yakshagana 'bhagavatha' late Narnappa Uppura. He entered the world of professional Yakshagana singing at the age of 21, captivating audiences with his melodious and rich voice.
  • A recipient of the prestigious Karnataka Rajyotsava award, Dhareshwar was a professional 'bhagavatha' for nearly four decades. He performed with renowned Yakshagana melas (touring troupes) such as Amrutheswari, Hiremahalingeshwara, Panchalinga, and Perdoor. Even after his retirement as the 'pradhana bhagavatha' (principal singer) from the Perdoor Yakshagana mela, he continued to grace various Yakshagana shows and 'Talamaddales' (traditional Yakshagana singing events).

Sudhir Kakar, 'Father of Indian Psychoanalysis', Dies

  • Sudhir Kakar, India's foremost psychoanalyst who helped readers understand Indian men and women like none other, passed away. French magazine Le Nouvel Observateur had once described Kakar as one of the 25 major thinkers of the world. With wit and humour, he deeply probed culture, social mores, family ties and elucidated what sets apart Indians from citizens of the world, and what sets apart Indians from Indians.
  • He received several awards, some of them are: Kakar's was awarded the 1987 Boyer Prize for Psychological Anthropology of the American Anthropological Association. He received the Order of Merit, Federal republic of Germany, 2012, Distinguished Service Award, Indo-American Psychiatric Association, 2007.
