NASA Awards Second Human Health, Performance Contract

  • NASA selected KBR Wyle Services, LLC of Fulton, Maryland, to provide services to the Human Health and Performance Directorate at the agency's Johnson Space Centre in Houston, which focuses on astronaut health, occupational health, and research that could help mitigate health risks for future human spaceflight missions.
  • The Human Health and Performance Contract 2 is a follow-on single-award indefinite-delivery/indefinite-quantity contract that begins its five-year period of performance on November 1, with two possible option periods that could extend it through 2035. The total estimated value of the base period plus the optional periods is $3.6 billion. Leidos, Inc. of Reston, Virginia, is a subcontractor.

India's First Drone-AI Powered Artificial Rain Experiment Launched in Jaipur

  • For the first time in India, cloud seeding technology enhanced with drones and artificial intelligence (AI) was used to trigger artificial rain. The pilot project took place in the Ramgarh Dam area of Jaipur, Rajasthan, with hopes of reviving the 129-year-old reservoir that has been dry for the past two decades and has not filled to capacity since 1981. The initiative is a joint effort between GenX AI, an India-US-based technology company, and the Rajasthan Government.

NASA Astronaut Butch Wilmore Retires

  • NASA astronaut Butch Wilmore, who spent nine months in space with fellow crew member Suni Williams after their spacecraft experienced technical problems, retired after a 25-year career.
  • The US space agency paid tribute to Mr. Wilmore's service and praised his commitment as truly exemplary.
  • Mr. Wilmore is a decorated US Navy captain who has flown in four different spacecrafts and accumulated 464 days in space during his tenure.

Asteroid Named after Astrophysicist Malhar Kendurkar

  • Astrophysicist Malhar Kendurkar, who was born and raised in Nagpur's posh Dhantoli area, was honoured with a rare celestial tag — an asteroid was officially named after his surname.
  • Asteroid 541801 Kendurkar, originally discovered in 2004 by Canadian astronomer Dave Balam, now carries Kendurkar's surname, a nod to his contributions to time-domain astrophysics and international astronomy collaborations.
  • The Kendurkar asteroid is a main belt object orbiting between Mars and Jupiter — roughly 750m in diameter, with a total of 285 observations recorded globally.

ISRO Prepares for BlueBird Satellite Launch with U.S. Collaboration

  • According to ISRO Chairman V. Narayanan, the 6,500 kg BlueBird satellite is expected to arrive in India by September 2025, with the launch scheduled within three to four months.
  •  Just days after the successful launch of the NISAR Earth Observation Satellite, the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) is gearing up for its next Indo-U.S. collaboration. The mission involves launching the Block 2 BlueBird communications satellite, developed by U.S.-based AST SpaceMobile, from the Satish Dhawan Space Centre, Sriharikota, using ISRO's most powerful launch vehicle, the LVM3 (formerly GSLV-Mk III).
