SC Panel: Bar Pvt Vehicles in Sariska Reserve, Raise Tiger Protection Force
To protect tigers and their habitats in Sariska Tiger Reserve (STR), Rajasthan, from adverse impacts of vehicular traffic, the Central Empowered Committee (CEC) of the Supreme Court recommended a ban on entry of private vehicles by March 2025 and the creation of a special tiger protection force.
The STR sees heavy traffic of unregulated vehicles as a large number of devotees visit the numerous temples inside the reserve, including the famous Pandupol temple that is located 22 km inside the core area.
The CEC has recommended using electric shuttle buses in lieu of ban on private vehicles and said that other options of transportation such as tramway, elevated road, motorable twin tunnel or ropeway could be considered based on feasibility studies.

Govt Issues 5th Draft Notification to Declare over 56k sq km of Western Ghats Eco-sensitive
The Centre issued a fifth draft notification to declare over 56,800 square kilometres of the Western Ghats across six states, including 13 villages in Kerala's landslide-hit Wayanad, Ecologically Sensitive Area (ESA), inviting suggestions and objections within 60 days.
The draft notification proposes to declare 9,993.7 sq km in Kerala, including 13 villages in two talukas of the landslide-hit district, ecologically sensitive.
Overall, the notification includes 449 sq km in Gujarat, 17,340 sq km in Maharashtra, 1,461 sq km in Goa, 20,668 sq km in Karnataka, 6,914 sq km in Tamil Nadu, and 9,993.7 sq km in Kerala in the proposed ESA.
Scientists Discover Six Gecko Species in Northeast India
Scientists and researchers have discovered six new species of bent-toed gecko, a type of small lizard, in the north-eastern region.
Two of the new species were found in Arunachal Pradesh and Nagaland each, while one each was discovered in Manipur and Mizoram. The discoveries were made in tiger reserves, wildlife sanctuaries, reserve forests and abandoned 'jhum' (shifting cultivation) areas in the four north-eastern states.
Scientists and researchers from Dehradun-based Wildlife Institute of India (WII), the Ashoka Trust for Research in Ecology and Environment, and London-based Natural History Museum discovered the new species.

Delhi Country's Third most Polluted City in First Half of 2024: CREA Data
Delhi ranked as the country's third most polluted city out of 256 cities in the first half of the year, according to an analysis of average PM 2.5 data by the Centre for Research on Energy and Clean Air (CREA) that was released in July 2024. The average PM 2.5 levels in Delhi during the period January to June was 102µg/m3 — twice the daily national standard of 60µg/m3 and behind only Faridabad (103µg/m3) and Byrnihat in Meghalaya (140µg/m3), the analysis revealed.
The most polluted city was Byrnihat in Meghalaya, and the second most polluted city was Faridabad in the National Capital Region.
