Punjab Launches India's First Evidence-based Anti-drug Curriculum

  • Punjab took a fresh and focused approach to the drug problem. From August 1, the state rolled out India's first-ever evidence-based anti-drug curriculum in government schools.
  • The move is part of the third phase of the 'Yudh Nashian De Virudh' (War Against Drugs) campaign and was launched by AAP leader Arvind Kejriwal and Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann in Arniwala, Fazilka.
  • The curriculum is designed for students of Classes 9 to 12 across 3,658 schools, covering nearly 8 lakh students. Over 6,500 trained teachers are ready to deliver the 27-week programme.
  • The programme has been developed with help from Nobel Laureate Abhijit Banerjee's J-PAL South Asia and top behavioural scientists. Their focus is to teach kids how to make smart, informed decisions before it's too late.

Transgender Enrolment in Schools, Colleges Rises, UP, Bihar Lead

  • India has seen a notable increase in the enrolment of transgender students in both school and higher education, according to data shared by the Ministry of Education in the Rajya Sabha.
  • As per the figures, the number of transgender students enrolled in schools rose from just 155 in the 2021-22 academic year to 965 in 2023-24. This marks a more than six-fold increase in two years.
  • Uttar Pradesh and Bihar recorded the highest school enrolments in 2023-24, with 327 and 282 students, respectively.
  • A similar increase was seen in colleges and universities. As per the All India Survey on Higher Education (AISHE), the number of transgender students enroled in higher education increased from 302 in 2020-21 to 1,448 in 2022-23 (provisional).
  • Uttar Pradesh topped this list as well, with 369 students in 2022-23, followed by Maharashtra (158), Madhya Pradesh (124), Telangana (104), and Tamil Nadu (98).

IIT Kanpur Professor Ajit Kumar Chaturvedi Appointed as BHU Vice Chancellor

  • IIT Kanpur professor Ajit Kumar Chaturvedi was appointed as Vice Chancellor of Banaras Hindu University. Prof. Chaturvedi has served as Director of IIT Roorkee (2017-2022), Director of the Indian Institute of Advanced Study, Shimla (Jan 2017-August 2018), and Director of IIT Mandi (July 2020- Jan 2022). He has previously headed the Department of Electrical Engineering at IIT Kanpur, and has also held the posts of Dean of Research and Development and Deputy Director at the institute.
  • BHU's Rector Prof. Sanjay Kumar had taken charge as acting Vice Chancellor in January 2025 after Professor Sudhir K. Jain completed his tenure.

IIT Roorkee Launches India's First No-code AI Marketing Course for Professionals

  • IIT Roorkee announced the launch of a new postgraduate certification course in AI-enabled Digital Marketing and MarTech, in collaboration with edtech firm Futurense Technologies.
  • This six-month programme is touted as India's first full-stack, no-code AI marketing certification tailored specifically for working professionals.
  • One of the key highlights of this course is that it does not require prior coding experience.
  • To bridge the knowledge gap, participants will first undergo a Futurense Bridge Course, a pre-course foundation module that introduces prompt engineering, no-code AI workflows, and integration tools essential for modern marketing.

UK's University of Bristol Gets UGC Nod to Set up Campus in Mumbai

  • The University Grants Commission (UGC) gave the nod to the United Kingdom's University of Bristol to establish a new campus in Mumbai, scheduled to open in the summer of 2026.
  • The Mumbai campus will be the first international campus that the University of Bristol will establish. The University, Mumbai was chosen for its strong reputation in technology, innovation, and the arts. The campus is planned to be located close to central Mumbai.
  • The University of Bristol ranked 51st under the best university in the QS World University Rankings 2026.

B. S. Murty Elected President of Indian Institute of Metals

  • Professor B. S. Murty, Director of the Indian Institute of Technology Hyderabad (IITH), was elected as the new President of the Indian Institute of Metals (IIM). The announcement was made during the institute's 79th Annual General Meeting in Kolkata, where outgoing President Sajjan Jindal, Chairman and Managing Director of JSW Group, handed over the leadership.
  • The Indian Institute of Metals, founded in 1946 with 42 members, has since grown into a premier professional body representing over 10,000 metallurgical and materials engineering experts across academia, research, and industry.
  • With more than four decades of experience in teaching, research, and innovation, Professor Murty is regarded as one of India's most distinguished metallurgists.

Rating Agency NAAC to Grade Colleges Using New AI-based Model from August 2025

  • The National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) will roll out a reformed accreditation system powered by Artificial Intelligence (AI) in August.
  • This overhaul, as confirmed by NAAC Chairperson Professor Anil Sahasrabudhe, replaces the three-decade-old model with a more efficient, transparent, and scalable digital framework.
  • The new system will feature two levels of accreditation: a basic accreditation for all institutions and a maturity-based graded accreditation for those opting to progress further.
  • Institutions with existing NAAC grades like A, A+, or A++ are also eligible to seek accreditation under the new framework—either by opting for the basic level or directly applying for the maturity-based graded accreditation.

Alok Kumar Assumes Charge as IIM Calcutta Director

  • Alok Kumar Rai assumed charge as Director of the Indian Institute of Management, Calcutta. Rai was previously the vice chancellor of the University of Lucknow. Before Rai, Professor Saibal Chattopadhyay was the director of the Institute.
  • The IIM-Calcutta did not have a regular full-term director for nearly two years. The appointment of a full-time director comes in the wake of the arrest of a second-year student in a rape case.
  • Before becoming the Vice-Chancellor of Lucknow University, Rai was a management professor at Banaras Hindu University (BHU). He also held several positions on various high-level committees and panels.
