India Surpasses China as Top Source of International Graduate Students in US

The number of Indians pursuing postgraduate studies in the United States (US) increased 63 per cent to 1.65 lakh in academic year 2022-23 — surpassing China for the first time in 15 years to become the largest source of international graduate students in America. There were 1.26 lakh Chinese graduate students in the US during the same period.
According to the latest Open Doors Report, 2.68 lakh Indian students were studying in the US last year at the undergraduate and postgraduate levels, including those enrolled in Optional Practical Training programmes, which allow foreign graduates with F-1 or student visa to engage in paid or voluntary work for up to three years. This is 35 per cent more than the 1.99 lakh students recorded in 2021-22, and represents the largest single-year jump in at least 23 years.
China and India together account for 52 per cent of the total international student cohort in America.

IIT Roorkee Organises All IITs International Relations Conclave

The International Relations (IR) Conclave, a highly influential platform for all the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) is dedicated to fostering discussions on the internationalisation of higher education at IITs. This year's (2023) IR Conclave was organised at the esteemed IIT Roorkee campus.
The remarkable event of IR Conclave 2023 brought together a diverse array of stakeholders and addressed the multifaceted challenges inherent in international education collaboration. It provided a platform for thought leaders, experts, and representatives from academia and funding agencies to engage in extensive dialogues on the strategies of internationalisation within the Indian Institute of Technology system.

New Rules Curtail Autonomy of IIMs, President Becomes 'Visitor'

The Indian government unveiled new rules that change the power dynamics in the Indian Institute of Management (IIM).
This appears in a move to tighten its grip on these prestigious institutions, which has stirred up some controversy.
As per the new regulations, the President will now function as a 'Visitor' at all IIMs across the country.
This newly assigned role bestows significant power upon the President, which includes the authority to appoint the chairperson of the board of governors, the directors, and the power to dissolve the board for failure to perform their duties accordingly.

UGC Picks Kerala Professor to Design Artic Studies Online Course

Anu Gopinath, a faculty member from the Kerala University of Fisheries and Ocean Studies (KUFOS), was chosen by the University Grants Commission (UGC) to create and deliver an online course on Arctic studies.
Gopinath, who serves as Associate Professor and Head of the Department of Aquatic Environment Management at KUFOS, was picked for the project through a competitive process that saw 92 proposals from educational institutions across India.
According to a KUFOS statement, Gopinath's courses will be hosted on the SWAYAM portal and will focus primarily on India's Arctic policy. This initiative, a collaborative effort between the UGC and the Ministry of Earth Sciences, aims to raise awareness among universities, institutions, and colleges about the availability of Arctic or polar studies.

VIT and University College Dublin Sign MoU to Boost Cross-border Collaboration

University College Dublin (UCD) and Vellore Institute of Technology (VIT) signed an MoU aiming to promote cross-border collaboration, student exchange, joint academic research, and faculty engagement.
The collaboration aims to empower VIT students to study at UCD in the Colleges of Engineering & Architecture, and Business for one term/full academic year. With this, the students at VIT will benefit from an access-feeder or 'international transfer program,' allowing them to study at UCD after completing a minimum of two years of their bachelor's degree.

India's Success in Reducing TB Incidence Acknowledged in WHO's Global TB Report 2023

The World Health Organization released its Global TB Report 2023. According to the report, India has made tremendous progress in improving case detection and reversed the impact of COVID-19 on the TB programme. The treatment coverage has improved to 80% of the estimated TB cases, an increase of 19% over the previous year.
India's efforts have resulted in reduction of TB incidence by 16% in 2022 (from 2015) almost double the pace at which global TB incidence is declining (which is 8.7%). The mortality of TB has also reduced by 18% during the same period in India and globally. The World Health Organization has made a downward revision of the TB mortality rates from 4.94 lakh in 2021 to 3.31 lakh in 2022, a reduction of over 34%.

World's First Whole Eye Transplant Performed in US

A team of surgeons in New York performed the world's first transplant of an entire eye in a procedure described as a medical breakthrough, although it isn't yet known whether the patient will actually regain his sight.
The groundbreaking surgery involved removing part of the face and the whole left eye of a donor and grafting them onto the recipient: a 46-year-old line worker who survived a 7,200-volt electric shock in June 2021 when his face touched a live wire.
Transplanting an entire eye has long been a holy grail of medical science, and though researchers have had some success in mice, where they have restored partial vision, it's never before been performed in a living person.

UK's Institute of Civil Engineers: Anusha Shah Takes Over as First Indian-origin President

The Institute of Civil Engineers (ICE) elected Professor Anusha Shah as the first Indian-origin president in its 205-year history. ICE is an independent professional association for civil engineers and a charitable body in the UK representing 95,000 members.
As the institution's 159th president, Shah took charge of her new role with a presidential address on the theme of nature-positive civil engineering at ICE's London headquarters.
Shah specialises in water and environmental engineering, with over 22 years' experience in designing, managing and leading projects and programmes in the UK and internationally.

QS Asia University Rankings 2024

Quacquarelli Symonds released QS Asia University Rankings 2024. Two Indian institutes- IIT Bombay and IIT Delhi were ranked in the top 50 list.
IIT Bombay has secured the top position in India and 40th position in overall Asia. Similarly, IIT Delhi stood second among Indian institutes and secured 46th rank overall.
Peking University of China topped the Asia ranking list by securing Rank 1 followed by the University of Hong Kong in the second position and the National University of Singapore in the third place. Nanyang Technological University, Singapore and Tsinghua University, China secured 4th spot.
Zhejiang University of China secured the 6th position, Fudan University of China in 7th place, Yonsei University of South Korea in 8th spot. Korea University stood on 9th place and the Chinese University of Hong Kong secured the 10th position. A total of 856 universities from Asia are included in this year's QS Asia University Rankings.

IIT Madras Zanzibar Campus Inaugurated

At least 50 per cent of the students in the first batch at IIT Madras' Zanzibar campus are Indians while 40 per cent of the admitted students are women, according to the Indian Institute of Technology Madras Director V. Kamakoti. The Zanzibar campus which is the first offshore campus of any IIT was inaugurated by President of Zanzibar, Hussein Ali Mwinyi.
The campus started in its first semester with students from different countries including Zanzibar, India, Nepal and Tanzania Mainland.
