International Day of Democracy

  • International Day of Democracy is observed on September 15 every year, for which the world comes together to honour and uphold the values of democracy, which is considered to be one of the most popular forms of governance in the world.
  • The idea behind establishing the day is based on the Universal Declaration on Democracy, which was adopted by the Inter-Parliamentary Union on September 15, 1997. The Inter-Parliamentary Union is an international organisation of national Parliaments. The resolution of observing the day was passed at the UN General Assembly.
  • In November 2007, the United Nations decided to support the new and restored democracies all around the globe. The Inter-Parliamentary Union then decided to observe the day on September 15 to commemorate the adoption of the Universal Declaration on Democracy on this day.
  • The theme for International Day of Democracy 2024 is 'Navigating AI for Governance and Citizen Engagement'.

Hindi Diwas

  • Hindi Diwas 2024 is celebrated on September 14 each year. Hindi Diwas 2024 is dedicated to honouring and promoting the Hindi language throughout India. This year's (2024) observance marks the 75th anniversary of Hindi's adoption as one of the official languages of India by the Constituent Assembly in 1949.
  • Hindi Diwas emphasises the significance of Hindi as one of the most widely spoken languages in India and its role in fostering national unity. The day is marked by a range of activities, including competitions, events, and the 'अखिल भारतीय राजभाषा सम्मेलन', aimed at promoting the use of Hindi in both daily and official communication.
  • The history of Hindi Diwas traces back to September 14, 1949, when the Constituent Assembly of India made a landmark decision to adopt Hindi, written in the Devanagari script, as one of the official languages of the newly independent country. This decision aimed to foster linguistic unity in a diverse nation with many languages and dialects. Hindi Diwas has been celebrated annually since 1953, honouring and promoting the Hindi language and its role in India's cultural and national identity.

World First Aid Day

  • World First Aid Day is a global annual event observed annually on the Second Saturday of every September with the intention to promote awareness about the role of first aid in saving lives. In 2024 is was observed on September 14.
  • World First Aid Day was first introduced by the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) in 2000. Henry Dunant was a young merchant who observed the Carnage at the battle of Solferino in 1859.
  • The theme for World First Aid Day 2024 is 'First Aid and Sports'.

Digvijay Diwas

  • India celebrates Digvijay Diwas every year on September 11, honouring the legacy of Swami Vivekananda and commemorating his historic speech at the World's Parliament of Religions in Chicago in 1893. This day is a tribute to Vivekananda's influential address, which introduced Indian spirituality and the philosophy of Vedanta to a global audience.
  • Digvijay Diwas 2024 marks 131 years since Swami Vivekananda's speech that profoundly impacted the world's understanding of India's religious and cultural heritage. Various events, lectures, and discussions are held across the country to honour his message of universal brotherhood, tolerance, and religious harmony.
  • The significance of September 11, 1893 lies in Swami Vivekananda's opening speech at the World's Parliament of Religions in Chicago, where he greeted the audience with the now-iconic words, "Sisters and Brothers of America." This simple yet powerful phrase earned him a standing ovation and established him as a global ambassador of Indian culture and spirituality.

9/11 Remembrance Day

  • September 11, also known as Patriot Day, is a national day of service and remembrance in the United States. It is observed to remember the victims of the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001. This day is also known as the September 11 National Day of Service and Remembrance or 9/11 Day.
  • The country pays tribute to the nearly 3,000 people who died in the attack on the World Trade Centre, the Pentagon and the crash of United Airlines Flight 93 in Pennsylvania.

National Forest Martyrs Day

  • National Forest Martyrs Day is celebrated every year on September 11 in India to pay tribute to those who died for the protection of the forest and wildlife of the country. The day honours protective environmentalists and personnel of the forest who have experienced certain risks in the process of conservation of natural resources.
  • The day goes back to the memory of the Khejarli Massacre, which took place in 1730 in the Marwar Kingdom. The then Maharaja Abhai Singh demanded Khejri trees from the Bishnoi village of Khejarli to be cut down to provide timber for his new palace.
  • However, his action was resisted by the Bishnoi community, which has always been very sensitive towards the natural community.
  • Villagers under the leadership of Amrita Devi Bishnoi protested by hugging trees to safeguard them. Unfortunately, Devi and many other members of the village were slain while defending the trees. It was estimated that 363 of them died while protesting.
  • In recognition of this sacrifice, the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change of India declared September 11 as the National Forest Martyrs Day in 2013.
  • The theme for National Forest Martyrs Day 2024 focuses on 'Honouring the Sacrifices of those who Defended Forests and Wildlife'.

World Suicide Prevention Day

  • World Suicide Prevention Day is observed each year on September 10 to raise awareness about suicide prevention and attempts. The day was established in 2003 through the combined efforts of the International Association for Suicide Prevention (IASP) and the World Health Organization (WHO).
  • World Suicide Prevention Day 2024 Theme is 'Changing the Narrative on Suicide'. This theme is to indicate that there is an alternative to suicide and aims to gain confidence.
