European Day of Languages

  • Every year since 2001 the European Day of Languages marked on September 26 celebrates the wealth of languages coexisting in Europe and beyond. Over 225 languages are native to Europe alone, not including languages that arrived on the continent through migration. The motto of this year's day is 'Languages for Peace'.
  • The European Day of Languages is also a celebration of democracy, freedom and solidarity. By understanding each other better, we are better able to find common solutions and to build a common future in which everyone matters, because everyone enriches the Europe of our birth.

World Environmental Health Day

  • World Environmental Health Day is observed annually on September 26. The day highlights the significance of fostering a safe and healthy environment, tackling key issues such as clean air, water, sanitation, pollution control, and waste management. It serves as a reminder that the health of our planet is closely tied to our well-being, and neglecting environmental protection endangers both nature and ourselves.
  • The International Federation of Environmental Health (IFEH) established World Environmental Health Day in 2011 to emphasise the importance of environmental care for human health.
  • The theme for 2024 is 'Environmental Health: Creating Resilient Communities through Disaster Risk Reduction and Climate Change Mitigation and Adaptation'. It emphasises the link between environmental health, climate change, and disaster risk management, calling for resilient communities that can address health risks related to climate change and natural disasters.

World Pharmacists Day

  • World Pharmacists Day is observed on September 25 every year. This day is celebrated to acknowledge the critical role that pharmacists play in the healthcare system. Pharmacists are known to be the unsung heroes of the healthcare industry, as they offer crucial services that guarantee the safe and efficient use of pharmaceuticals. 
  • The history of World Pharmacists Day traces back to 2009, when it was established by the International Pharmaceutical Federation (FIP), the global federation of national organisations of pharmacists and pharmaceutical scientists. The decision to celebrate World Pharmacists Day on September 25 was chosen to mark the anniversary of the founding of FIP in 1912.
  • The theme for World Pharmacists Day 2024 is 'Pharmacists: Meeting global health needs'. This theme underscores the vital role pharmacists play in addressing global health challenges, from ensuring access to medications to providing health education and support.

Antyodaya Diwas 2024

  • Every year, Antyodaya Diwas is celebrated on September 25th to honour the legacy of one of India's most renowned political thinkers and social reformers, Pandit Deendayal Upadhyay. Antyodaya Diwas date marks his birth anniversary and is observed as a tribute to his philosophy of 'Antyodaya,' meaning the upliftment of the most marginalised sections of society. 
  • It is a day of remembrance and celebration of his life and legacy and he was one of the most prominent figures in India's political history. He was a co-founder of the Bharatiya Jana Sangh (BJS) and a thinker of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS). Upadhyaya is also known for his efforts to uplift the poor and less fortunate, and so his birth anniversary is celebrated on Antyodaya, which means 'rising of the last'.

International Day of Sign Languages

  • The International Day of Sign Languages is an annual event observed on September 23 globally. The day is marked to raise awareness about the rights of the deaf community and other sign language users.
  • The proposal for the International Day of Sign Languages came from the World Federation of the Deaf (WFD), an organisation representing deaf people worldwide. The Permanent Mission of Antigua and Barbuda to the United Nations and 97 United Nations Member States moved a resolution A/RES/72/161 in 2017 that proclaimed September 23 as the International Day of Sign Languages.
  • This date holds historical significance as it commemorates the establishment of the WFD in 1951. The day was first celebrated in 2018 as part of the International Week of the Deaf. The International Week of the Deaf has grown into a global movement advocating for deaf rights since its first celebration in September 1958.
  • The theme for the 2024 International Day of Sign Languages is 'Sign up for Sign Language Rights'.

World Alzheimer's Day

  • World Alzheimer's Day is observed annually on September 21 to raise awareness about Alzheimer's disease and dementia, promote understanding, and combat the stigma surrounding these conditions. It serves as a day of global awareness and education, encouraging people to learn more about the challenges faced by individuals living with Alzheimer's, their families, and caregivers.
  • World Alzheimer's Day was first launched in 1994 by Alzheimer's Disease International (ADI) to mark the 10th anniversary of the organisation. The day was created in collaboration with the World Health Organisation (WHO) to shed light on the growing impact of the disease and the importance of early diagnosis and support for those affected.
  • The theme for World Alzheimer's Day 2024 is 'Time to act on dementia, Time to act on Alzheimer's'.

World Rivers Day

  • World Rivers Day is a celebration of the world's waterways. It highlights the many values of our rivers, strives to increase public awareness, and encourages the improved stewardship of all rivers around the world. Rivers in virtually every country face an array of threats, and only through our active involvement can we ensure their health in the years ahead.
  • In 2005, the United Nations launched the Water for Life Decade to help create a greater awareness of the need to better care for our water resources. Following this, the establishment of World Rivers Day was in response to a proposal initiated by internationally renowned river advocate, Mark Angelo.
  • The proposal for a global event to celebrate rivers was based on the success of BC Rivers Day, which Mark Angelo had founded and led in western Canada since 1980. A World Rivers Day event was seen by agencies of the UN as a good fit for the aims of the Water for Life Decade and the proposal was approved. It is annually celebrated on the fourth Sunday of every September.

International Day of Peace

  • The International Day of Peace is observed annually on September 21 to promote peace and celebrate the power of global solidarity for a peaceful and sustainable world. Also known as World Peace Day, it encourages people of all races and ethnicities to propagate the importance of world peace.
  • The International Day of Peace was established in 1981 by the United Nations General Assembly. In 2001, the General Assembly unanimously voted to devote a day to commemorating and strengthening the ideals of peace. The UN initially designated the third Tuesday in September 1981 to celebrate World Peace Day. Later in 2002, the date was then shifted and fixed to September 21.
  • Every year, a new theme is announced to celebrate the International Day of Peace. This year (2024), the theme mentioned by the United Nations is 'Cultivating a Culture of Peace'.
