World Athletics Day

  • World Athletics Day is celebrated on May 7. This Day is observed to raise awareness about Athletics.
  • This day was first observed in 1996 and it was launched by International Amateur Athletic Federation (IAAF) President Primo Nebiolo.
  • The International Amateur Athletic Federation (IAAF) was founded in 1912 to organise various sports events and athletics.  
  • In 2001, the name of the International Amateur Athletic Federation (IAAF) was changed to the International Association of Athletics Federations. And in 2019, the name was again changed to World Athletics.

BRO Celebrates its Foundation

  • The Border Roads Organisation (BRO), a vital arm of India's defence and strategic infrastructure framework, celebrated its 64th Foundation Day on May 7, 2025. Operating under the Ministry of Defence, BRO has been instrumental in enhancing road connectivity in India's most remote and challenging border regions, playing a key role in both defence preparedness and regional development.

International No Diet Day

  • Observed every year on May 6, International No Diet Day is a global celebration that promotes body positivity, encourages self-acceptance, and challenges the societal obsession with thinness.
  • International No Diet Day was launched in 1992 by British feminist Mary Evans Young, who founded the Diet Breakers organisation after her personal struggle with anorexia. The idea behind the day was to challenge the harmful messages promoted by diet culture and to encourage people to embrace and respect their bodies.

World Asthma Day

  • World Asthma Day is an annual event that aims to raise awareness about asthma, globally. Every year this day is observed on the first Tuesday of May (May 6 in 2025).
  • It is organised by the Global Initiative for Asthma (GINA) and strives to engage individuals experiencing asthma with the appropriate education so they can deal with their condition successfully.
  • The Global Initiative for Asthma (GINA) was founded in 1993. The first World Asthma Day was observed in the year 1998.

  • On May 5 countries around the globe observe World Portuguese Language Day, an occasion to honour the linguistic and cultural heritage of over 265 million Portuguese speakers. Established by the Community of Portuguese-speaking Countries (CPLP) in 2009 and later officially recognised by UNESCO in 2019.

  • World Laughter Day is celebrated every year on the first Sunday of May, and this year (2025) it is celebrated on May 4.
  • World Laughter Day was established in 1998 and the first celebration was on 10 May 1998, in Mumbai, India, arranged by Dr. Madan Kataria, founder of the worldwide Laughter Yoga movement.

International Firefighters' Day

  • International Firefighters' Day is observed annually on May 4.
  • On December 2, 1998, a tragic accident happened in in Linton, Australia, in which, resulting in the death of five firefighters from Geelong West Fire Brigade on the spot. The establishment of International Firefighters' Day took inspiration from that dreadful event.

World Press Freedom Day

  • World Press Freedom Day also known as World Press Day World is celebrated on May 3 every year to commemorate the fundamental principles of the press and to honour world journalists. The day stresses the importance of a free and independent press and promotes the freedom of expression in the world.
  • The day was established by the United Nations General Assembly in 1993 on the recommendations of the UNESCO General Conference. The day is observed to mark the anniversary of the Windhoek Declaration, a statement of free press principles put together. This document calls for an independent and pluralistic media environment.
