International Jazz Day 2024 Celebrated Annually on April 30th

  • International Jazz Day, celebrated annually on April 30th, is a global event that celebrates the power of jazz to bring people together and promote peace, unity, and intercultural dialogue. 
  • The 2024 edition of International Jazz Day will be celebrated in more than 190 countries, with the city of Tangier serving as the Global Host. This marks the first time a city on the African continent has hosted the event, highlighting the rich cultural heritage and jazz traditions of the region.
  • Tangier, a melting pot of cultural expressions, is located at the crossroads of Europe and Africa. The city boasts a long, rich history of jazz and is known for its jazz heritage, having hosted numerous world-renowned jazz artists over the years, including Josephine Baker, Ornette Coleman, Archie Shepp, Herbie Mann, and the jazz master pianist Randy Weston.
  • This year marks a significant milestone as the city of Tangier, Morocco becomes the first African host city for the global celebration.
  • The four-day celebration, from April 27-30, emphasizes Tangier's jazz heritage and highlights the cultural and artistic ties between people in Morocco, Europe, and Africa. The event includes a series of education programs, events for students of all ages, and conversations about the history of jazz and its impact on Tangier.

Ayushman Bharat Diwas 2024, Celebrating India's Healthcare Initiative

  • Ayushman Bharat Diwas is celebrated annually on April 30 to raise awareness about the Ayushman Bharat Yojana and its goals. This year, it falls on Tuesday, April 30, 2024. The day was established by the government to highlight the scheme's objective of providing better access to affordable and quality healthcare services, especially for the underprivileged.
  • Launched in 2018 by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the Ayushman Bharat Yojana (PM-JAY) is a healthcare scheme that offers free health insurance of Rs. 5 lakh to more than 10.74 crore poor and vulnerable families every year. The scheme covers three days of pre-hospitalisation and 15 days of post-hospitalisation care, ensuring comprehensive support for patients.

World Immunisation Week 2024 Observed on April 24 to 30

  • World Immunisation Week (WIW) is a global healthcare event, typically celebrated every year in the last week of April between 24 and 30, intending to promote vaccine usage and protect people of all ages from infectious diseases.
  • The World Health Organisation (WHO), in association with various international and local groups, joined hands together in this worldwide event to protect local communities from vaccine-preventable diseases and provide education by conducting various campaigns and activities. The WIW 2024 activities focused on emphasising the importance of having vaccines and immunisation in addition to aiding the governments in providing the necessary technical assistance and information required to launch effective immunisation programmes.
  • This year 2024, the World Immunisation Week theme is 'Humanly Possible: Saving lives through immunisation'.

International Dance Day

  • International Dance Day, also known as World Dance Day is celebrated every year on 29 April. This day is dedicated to the art form of dance, and it is used to promote dance as a universal value. The day also aims to cross all the political, cultural, and ethnic barriers in the field of dancing. To mark the occasion of World Dance Day, every year the International Dance Committee and the International Theatre Institute ITI  selects an outstanding choreographer or dancer to convey a special message to all the dancers across the globe.
  • The idea of World Dance Day was first introduced in 1982 by the International Dance Committee of the UNESCO International Theatre Institute. The main objective of this day is to celebrate dance, raise awareness about its importance, and encourage people all over the world to participate in this art form. World Dance Day is celebrated in over 200 countries all over the world. Various dance performances, workshops, and events are organised by local and international communities to promote the day.

  • Alejandra Marisa Rodriguez, a 60-year-old lawyer, wins Miss Universe Buenos Aires, becoming the first woman of her age to claim such a distinguished beauty title.
  • The change in rules by the Miss Universe pageant in 2023, which now allows women aged 18 to 73 to compete.
  • She contested with 34 others, ranging from 18 to 73 in age, to win the beauty pageant.

World Day for Safety and Health at Work

  • Every year April 28 is celebrated as World Day for Safety and Health at Work all over the world. World Day for Safety and Health at Work Day is observed to promote the prevention of occupational accidents and diseases globally.
  • The International Labour Organization (ILO) established the World Day for Safety and Health at Work in 2003 as an annual global initiative to raise awareness of the importance of safety and health in the workplace. The date chosen for this event coincides with the adoption of the Occupational Safety and Health Convention by the ILO on April 28, 1971.
  • The theme of the World Day for Safety and Health at Work 2024 is 'The impacts of climate change on occupational safety and health'.

  • The World Veterinary Association (WVA) established World Veterinary Day in 2000. It was first celebrated on 29 April 2000, and has been celebrated every year since. This day offers a significant opportunity to recognise and honour the enormous contributions of veterinarians to society and to raise awareness about the importance of veterinary medicine.
  • Each year, a different theme is chosen to highlight a specific aspect of veterinary medicine. The theme of World Veterinary Day 2024 is 'Veterinarians are Essential Health Workers'.

International Chernobyl Disaster Remembrance Day

  • Every year, on April 26, we observe the International Chernobyl Disaster Remembrance Day. This day is dedicated to remembering the victims of the Chernobyl nuclear disaster and raising awareness about this catastrophic event.
  • On April 26, 1986, the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant in Ukraine (formerly part of the Soviet Union) exploded, releasing a massive radioactive cloud into the atmosphere. This disaster exposed approximately 8.4 million people to harmful nuclear radiation.
  • The radioactive contamination devastated the surrounding areas, causing extensive damage to crops, plants, and infrastructure. The affected regions in Belarus, Ukraine, and Russia were heavily contaminated, posing a serious threat to human health and the environment.
  • In 1990, the United Nations General Assembly adopted a resolution calling for international cooperation to address and mitigate the consequences of the Chernobyl disaster. This marked the beginning of the United Nations' involvement in the recovery efforts.
  • In 2016, the United Nations officially established the International Chernobyl Disaster Remembrance Day to recognise the persistent long-term consequences of the disaster and support the affected communities and territories in their efforts to achieve sustainable development.

World Intellectual Property Day

  • The World Intellectual Property Day is celebrated every year on April 26. The day aims to raise awareness about intellectual property (IP) rights and its role in encouraging innovation and creativity to make the world a better place. The day was established in 2000 by the World Intellectual Property Office.
  • The day was first celebrated by the World Intellectual Property Office (WIPO) in 2000 with a focus on creating sustainable solutions.
  • WIPO, established in 1967, is the global forum for intellectual property (IP) services, policy, information and cooperation. This is a self-funding agency of the United Nations, with 193 member states to promote the protection of intellectual property rights.
  • The theme for World Intellectual Property Day 2024 is 'IP and the SDGs: Building Our Common Future with Innovation and Creativity'.
