CBSE Introduces Psychological Guidance Ahead of Board Exams 2024

  • In an effort to support students and parents ahead of the upcoming Board exams, the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) announced the commencement of psychological counselling services from January 1, 2024. This initiative aims to provide comprehensive assistance aligned with the examination schedule, which has already been unveiled for practical and theory papers scheduled between January 1 and January 15, respectively.
  • CBSE is probably the only Board in the country which has been providing psychological counselling to students and parents on such a wide scale continuously for 26 years in innovative ways.

Andhra Launches Second Phase of Jagananna Aarogya Suraksha

  • The Andhra Pradesh government launched the second phase of the Jagananna Aarogya Suraksha across the State. As a part of the programme, 13,954 health camps will be conducted in six months, beginning in the villages on January 2 and in urban areas the next day.
  • Ward and village volunteers will visit every household twice and explain to the people the details of the health camps.
  • They will make the first visit 15 days before the camp date to inform about the venue and scheduled date, while the second visit will be three days before the camp as a reminder.
  • As many as 12,423 health camps were organised during the first phase of the programme and 1,64,982 patients were referred to hospitals empanelled under Dr. YSR Aarogyasri scheme.
  • The Department of Health, Medical and Family Welfare has been working to achieve 'Aarogya Andhra Pradesh' and as part of its efforts, the first phase of the Jagananna Aarogya Suraksha was completed in 50 days, benefiting more than 60 lakh people.

First All-girl Sainik School in Vrindavan

  • Defence Minister Rajnath Singh inaugurated Samvid Gurukulam Girls Sainik School at Vrindavan, Uttar Pradesh.
  • This is the first all-girls Sainik School with a strength of over 870 and was inaugurated under the initiative of establishing 100 new Sainik Schools in a partnership mode with NGOs, private schools and government schools in all states. So far, 42 such schools have been opened and these are in addition to the existing 33 Sainik Schools already functioning under the erstwhile pattern of the Ministry of Defence operating these schools.

IIT Roorkee, IIT Bhilai Sign MoU to Promote Tribal Research, Preserve Indian Knowledge Systems

  • The Indian Institutes of Technology in Roorkee and Bhilai – IIT Roorkee and IIT Bhilai, signed an MoU to strengthen the academic and research collaboration between the two institutions. This strategic partnership aims to preserve and promote Indian Knowledge Systems (IKS) and seeks to contribute to socio-economic development in tribal areas, emphasising research on traditional medicinal plants, tribal culture studies, agricultural practices in tribal regions, and financial literacy among tribal populations.
  • The MoU was signed at IIT Bhilai by the heads of both institutions – Professor K K Pant, Director IIT Roorkee and Professor Rajiv Prakash, Director IIT Bhilai.

Delhi Government Awards Schools for Best Management committee

  • The Delhi government is set to acknowledge outstanding School Management Committees (SMCs) at its annual Excellence in Education Awards. The criteria for the 'School with Best Management Committee Award' include evaluating the impact on student attendance and the prudent utilisation of funds.
  • The assessment for the award will consider the performance of the applicants during the academic session 2022-23.

Vice-President Jagdeep Dhankhar Appointed as Ex-Officio Chancellor of Pondicherry University

  • In a significant development, the Vice President of India, Jagdeep Dhankhar, was appointed as the ex-officio Chancellor of Pondicherry University. This appointment came as a result of a modification in Statute 1(1) of the Pondicherry University Act of 1985. The official communication from Rajneesh Bhutani, Registrar-in-charge of the University, highlighted that this change is effective from December 5.
  • Pondicherry University, established in 1985 by an Act of Parliament, has been a prominent institution for higher education in the region. The Pondicherry University Act of 1985 outlines the governance structure of the university, including the position of the Chancellor.

IIT-Guwahati Collaborates with Assam Govt to Promote STEM Studies

  • The Indian Institute of Technology, Guwahati collaborated with the Government of Assam's flagship Arohan scheme to motivate meritorious students to pursue STEM subjects in their higher education.
  • To date, the Institute has successfully hosted 3311 students (2009 girls and 1302 boys) and few hundred mentee teachers, inspiring them to explore the vast opportunities and interests in STEM education.
  • Under the Arohan scheme, IIT Guwahati has hosted meritorious students (Mentees) along with their Guide teachers/Officers in a total of 12 batches. During their visit to IIT Guwahati, these students had the opportunity to engage with institute faculty members, interact with students, and explore institutional facilities.
  • Arohan, conceived as a Mentor-Mentee program for secondary class students in Government schools, is an initiative championed by the visionary Chief Minister of Assam, Himanta Biswa Sarma.

Certificate, Professional Courses in Product Management by ISB Executive Education, Emeritus

  • ISB Executive Education launched a 'Certificate in Products Management' programme as well as an extensive 'Professional Certificate in Product Management' programme. These courses were launched in partnership with Emeritus, a platform that offers professional courses and certification programmes.
  • The 'Certificate in Product Management' programme has 11 modules, and the extensive 'Professional Certificate in Product Management' has an extended 23-module syllabus.

'MPhil Not Recognised Degree'

  • The University Grants Commission (UGC) issued a warning, cautioning students against pursuing Master of Philosophy (MPhil) programmes from universities.
  • This alert followed the cancellation of the MPhil course by the UGC, despite which some universities persist in offering it.
  • The UGC had earlier declared the MPhil degree illegitimate, instructing higher educational institutions not to offer MPhil programmes.
  • The UGC advisory urged universities to take immediate steps to cease MPhil admissions for the upcoming academic year and advised students against enrolling in MPhil programmes.
