Oxford Ends Ties with TCS iON over Technical Glitches

  • Less than a year after the Oxford University signed a contract with the Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) iON to oversee the Oxford admissions test, the varsity following the technical problems experienced by some candidates undertaking Oxford's online admissions tests in 2023, as well as their schools, colleges and other test centres, decided to terminate its deal with the company.
  • In April 2023 TCS had announced that it was selected by Oxford University for the delivery of most of the university's admissions tests from 2023 onwards.

VAIBHAV Fellowship: Science Ministry's Step Towards Scientific Leadership

  • The Department of Science and Technology (DST) introduced the VAIBHAV Fellowship, an initiative aimed at fostering collaboration between accomplished researchers and premier educational institutions in India.
  • Union Minister Jitendra Singh made the announcement, revealing that the selected 'VAIBHAV' fellows would actively engage with esteemed institutions such as IITs, IISCs, and other academic entities.
  • The VAIBHAV Fellowship, officially known as Vaishvik Bharatiya Vaigyanik Fellowship, falls under the purview of the Science Ministry. As per the official data, a total of 302 applications were received for the fellowship, out of which, 22 VAIBHAV Fellows and 2 Distinguished VAIBHAV Fellows were recommended.
  • The chosen VAIBHAV fellows are empowered to identify an Indian institution for collaboration and may allocate up to two months per year for a maximum duration of three years towards this endeavour.

Himachal Pradesh Technical University Gives Nod to Dual Degree Programmes

  • The academic council of Himachal Pradesh Technical University approved its proposal to start dual degree programmes under the National Education Policy, 2020 for its students. The decision was taken during the 33rd meeting of the academic council of the university held under the chairmanship of Vice Chancellor Prof. Shashi Kumar Dhiman.
  • Students can now pursue dual degree programmes -- Bachelor of Technology and Master of Technology (Btech-Mtech), and Bachelor of Business Administration and Master of Business Administration (BBA-MBA) -- in colleges affiliated to the university.

Central Government Launches 'Anuvadini' App for Multilingual Education

  • In a move towards promoting multilingualism in education, the central government introduced the 'Anuvadini' app, an Artificial Intelligence-based platform. The initiative aims to make study materials for all school and higher education courses available in digital form, specifically in Indian languages listed in the 8th Schedule of the Indian Constitution. This step aligns with the recommendations of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, emphasising the importance of studying in one's mother tongue.
  • The University Grants Commission (UGC), All India Council of Technical Education (AICTE), and the Department of School Education have been instructed to ensure the availability of study materials in regional languages.
  • Educational regulators, including UGC, AICTE, NCERT, NIOS, IGNOU, and institutions like IITs, CUs, and NITs, are mandated to make study materials accessible in Indian languages within the next three years.
  • The NEP 2020 underscores the value of India's multilingual nature, considering it a significant asset for the nation's socio-cultural, economic, and educational development.

Cabo Verde Achieves Malaria-Free Certification by WHO

  • The World Health Organization (WHO) officially certified Cabo Verde as a malaria-free country. This accomplishment positioned Cabo Verde alongside Mauritius and Algeria as the third nation in the WHO African region to achieve malaria-free status.
  • The WHO certifies a country as malaria-free after it demonstrates the interruption of nationwide malaria transmission for a minimum of three consecutive years. Additionally, the country must have a robust surveillance and response system in place to prevent the re-establishment of indigenous transmission.
  • Cabo Verde's certification adds to the list of 43 countries and 1 territory globally that were recognised as 'malaria-free' by the WHO. Notable instances in the South East Asian region include the Maldives (2015) and Sri Lanka (2016), while India awaits such certification.
