Chhattisgarh Bachao Andolan's Alok Shukla to Receive Goldman Environmental Prize
Forest and tribal rights activist Alok Shukla was selected for the prestigious Goldman Environmental Prize – 2024 for successfully leading a community campaign that saved 4,45,000 (4.45 lakh) acres of biodiversity-rich forests from 21 planned coal mines in Chhattisgarh.
Also known as the Green Nobel, the prize recognises grassroots environmental heroes from roughly the world's six inhabited continental regions — Africa, Asia, Europe, Islands & Island Nations, North America, and South & Central America.
The Goldman Environmental Foundation mentioned that the government cancelled the auction of 21 proposed coal mines in Hasdeo Aranya, whose pristine forests — popularly known as the lungs of Chhattisgarh — are one of the largest intact forest areas in India.
In 2010, the Union Environment Ministry declared the Hasdeo forests a "no-go" zone for mining in recognition of their rich biodiversity but the declaration was never formalised into law and successive governments have attempted to jumpstart mining operations.
The Goldman Environmental Prize honors grassroots environmental champions globally for their impactful actions.
This year marks the 35th anniversary of the Goldman Environmental Prize.

Gina Justus, an English High School teacher at the Sharjah Girls Branch in the United Arab Emirates (UAE), has been named the regional winner for the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region at the prestigious 2024 Cambridge Dedicated Teacher Awards. This achievement celebrates her outstanding mentorship and dedication to charity work.
The 2024 Cambridge Dedicated Teacher Awards witnessed an unprecedented number of nominations, with more than 14,840 submissions from 141 countries worldwide. Justus's recognition as the Regional Winner in the MENA region is a testament to her exceptional contributions to the field of education.
The jury lauded Justus's unwavering commitment to her department, regularly organising and conducting workshops to raise teaching standards. Veteran actor Nirmal Rishi, best known for her work in Punjabi film industry, was conferred with the Padma Shri award on Monday. Nirmal Rishi received the award from President Droupadi Murmu at a ceremonial function held at the Rashtrapati Bhavan in the national capital.
After attending the ceremony, Nirmal Rishi spoke to ANI and expressed her happiness. "When I got the first call, I got nervous. I am happy that I received the award. I have done a lot of theatre. I have worked in around 100 films," Nirmal Rishi said.
Her career boasts a rich tapestry of roles, with notable appearances in Punjabi films like 'Nikka Zaildar', 'Nikka Zaildar 2', 'Long Da Lishkara' and 'The Great Sardar'.
Padma Awards, one of the highest civilian honours of the country, are conferred in three categories: Padma Vibhushan, Padma Bhushan and Padma Shri.

Top Royal Honour for British Indian Medic
Britain's King Charles III unveiled a set of top royal honours, elevating senior British Indian medic Lord Ajay Kumar Kakkar and musician Lord Andrew Lloyd Webber as his new Knight Companions of the Most Noble Order of the Garter.
Lord Kakkar was chosen for one of the country's oldest ceremonial orders in the gift of the British monarch to honour outstanding public service, made without prime ministerial advice as is the case with other royal honours.
