Black Dog by Chinese director Hu Guan won the Cannes Un Certain Regard Prize. The Jury Prize went to Boris Lojkine's asylum-seeker tale, The Story of Souleymane. The Un Certain Regard Prize for Best Actress was given to Anasuya Sengupta for The Shameless. Un Certain Regard is a section of the Cannes Film Festival's official selection. German author Jenny Erpenbeck and translator Michael Hofmann have won the prestigious International Booker Prize for their novel "Kairos." Srinivas R. Kulkarni, an Indian-origin U.S. scientist and brother of renowned author Sudha Murty, has been awarded the prestigious Shaw Prize in Astronomy for 2024. This prestigious recognition celebrates Kulkarni's groundbreaking discoveries in the field of astronomy, including his pioneering work on millisecond pulsars, gamma-ray bursts, supernovae, and other transient astronomical phenomena.
Kulkarni's illustrious career spans decades of pioneering research and leadership roles in the field of astronomy. After obtaining his M.S. from the Indian Institute of Technology in 1978, he went on to earn his Ph.D. from the University of California in 1983. Among his notable achievements, Kulkarni served as the director of Caltech Optical Observatories from 2006 to 2018.

Indian-Origin US Scientist Shrinivas R. Kulkarni Wins Prestigious Shaw Prize in Astronomy
Shrinivas R. Kulkarni, George Ellery Hale Professor of Astronomy and Planetary Science at California Institute of Technology (Caltech), USA, bagged the Shaw Prize, 2024.
Kulkarni is the younger brother of well-known writer and Rajya Sabha member Sudha Murty, and hails from Karnataka.
Also known as the Nobel of the East, the prize from the Hong Kong-based Shaw Prize Foundation recognises contributions one has made to furthering societal progress, enhancing quality of life, and enriching humanity's spiritual civilization. The Foundation announces the annual awards in the areas of astronomy, medicine and life sciences, and mathematical sciences.
Kulkarni won along with Peter Sarnak, a Mathematics Professor at Princeton, and Swee Lay Thein and Stuart Orkin, both from the USA for their work in life sciences and medicine.
Kulkarni won the prize for his ground-breaking discoveries about millisecond pulsars, gamma-ray bursts, supernovae, and other variable or transient astronomical objects. His contributions to time-domain astronomy culminated in the conception, construction and leadership of the Palomar Transient Factory and its successor, the Zwicky Transient Facility, which have revolutionised our understanding of the time-variable optical sky.
