Vinod Ganatra Becomes First Indian Honoured With 'Nelson Mandela Lifetime Achievement Award'

  • Globally acclaimed filmmaker Vinod Ganatra became the first Indian to be conferred the prestigious 'Nelson Mandela Lifetime Achievement Award' of South Africa for his contribution to films. He was honoured with the coveted award at the ongoing 7th Nelson Mandela Children's Film Festival, for his immense contributions to the world of cinema for kids.
  • Ganatra has bagged 36 national and international awards, including the 'Janakinath Gaur Award' from Doordarshan for his children's programme, 'Baingan Raja.' He became the only Indian filmmaker to receive the 'Liv Ullmann Peace Prize', in Chicago, for his Gujarati film, 'Harun-Arun'.

Sahitya Akademi Announces Yuva Puraskar, Bal Sahitya Puraskar Winners for 2024

  • The Sahitya Akademi announced the names of 23 writers, including English writer K. Vaishali and Hindi author Gaurav Pandey for the prestigious Yuva Puraskar across as many languages.
  • "The Executive Board of the Sahitya Akademi in its meeting held under the Chairmanship of its president Madhav Kaushik approved selection of 23 writers who were selected on the basis of recommendations made by the Jury comprising three members each in the concerned language in accordance with the rules and procedure laid down for the purpose.
  • While Ms. Vaishali was named for her memoir 'Homeless: Growing up Lesbian and Dyslexic in India', Gaurav Pandey won the prestigious award for his poetry collection 'Smritiyon Ke Beech Ghiri Hai Prithvi'.
  • The Yuva Puraskar has been awarded for 10 poetry books, seven collections of short stories, two collections of articles and one of essays, one novel, one book of ghazals and one memoir.
  • Yuva Puraskar awardees receive a casket containing an engraved copper plaque and a cheque of Rs. 50,000 at an award ceremony.
  • For the Bal Sahitya Puraskar, the Akademi picked English writer Nandini Sengupta for her historical fiction 'The Blue Horse and Other Amazing Animal Stories from Indian History' and Devender Kumar's collection of children's stories '51 Baal Kahaniyan'.
  • The Bal Sahitya Puraskar has been awarded for seven novels, six books of poetry, four stories, five short stories, one play, and one historical fiction.
  • The winners of the Bal Sahitya Puraskar receive a casket containing an engraved copper plaque and a cheque of Rs. 50,000.

Indian Railways Entered Its Name into Limca Book of Records

  • Indian Railways sets a record in the Limca Book of Records for hosting the most people at a public service event.
  • A massive 40,19,516 people attended the inauguration of railway infrastructure projects by PM Modi on February 26, 2024, at 2,140 venues.
  • The record event marked the opening of road over/under railway bridges and the laying of foundation stones for new railway stations.

2024 Kavli Prize Awarded in Astrophysics, Nanoscience & Neuroscience

  • The 2024 Kavli Prize winners were announced, honoring great work in neuroscience, astrophysics, and nanoscience. Eight well-known scholars from well-known American colleges were recognised for their groundbreaking work in these areas.
  • A Norwegian-American businessman and philanthropist named Fred Kavli created the Kavli Prize because he wanted to support scientific study that could make people's lives better. After getting $340 million for his company Kavlico in 2000, Kavli started The Kavli Foundation. The foundation's main goal is to advance science for the good of all people. It also works to help people understand and support experts and their work.
  • The inaugural prize was announced in 2008, and awarded to seven scientists.  The Kavli Prizes are awarded in three areas: astrophysics, nanoscience and neuroscience.
  • ASTROPHYSICS: David Charbonneau and Sara Seager were given awards for their groundbreaking work in finding exoplanets and figuring out what their atmospheres are like. Their methods have made it easier to look for life in galaxies other than our own.
  • NANOSCIENCE: Robert Langer, Armand Paul Alivisatos, and Chad Mirkin were honored for making important contributions to nanotechnology. Langer's work on nanoengineering materials for drug delivery systems, Alivisatos's creation of quantum dots for bioimaging, and Mirkin's work on sphere nucleic acids all show how nanoscience has changed medicine and technology.
  • NEUROSCIENCE: Nancy Kanwisher, Winrich Freiwald, and Doris Tsao made big steps toward understanding how facial recognition works in the brain. This gave scientists new information about how the brain works and how we think.

Rapid Test for Urinary Tract Infections Wins Longitude Prize

  • A high-tech, rapid point-of-care test for UTIs (Urinary Tract Infection), PA-100 AST System, developed by the Sweden-based in vitro diagnostic company, Sysmex Astrego won the £10 million Longitude Prize on Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) prize.
  • Of the 10-million-pound Longitude Prize, £2 million was awarded to various innovators to refine their technology and the final winner receives £8 million.
  • The winner, PA-100 AST System, is a high-tech, transformative, rapid, point-of-care test for UTIs that is seen as a game changer in the diagnostic sphere.
  • The winner of the Longitude Prize is set to spearhead the list of emerging rapid diagnostic technologies in a transformative manner.
