DRDO Wins BusinessLine Changemaker of the Year

  • In September 2025, the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) was honored with the Changemaker of the Year Award at the BusinessLine Changemaker Awards for its contributions to indigenous strategic technologies. Alongside, the Azim Premji Foundation received the Iconic Changemaker Award in recognition of its extensive work in education and healthcare. These awards spotlight the dual pillars of India's development: cutting-edge technology leadership and sustained social impact.
  • The award was conferred on Raja Babu Ummalaneni, Director General of DRDO's Missiles & Strategic Systems, for his role in advancing India's indigenization of defense technology.
  • Under his leadership, DRDO was pushed forward domestically developed systems, emphasizing self-reliance in critical areas.
  • The recognition emphasises that strategic research and development in defense is considered a key driver of national transformation.
  • The award to DRDO reinforces that defense innovation and strategic autonomy are being recognised as drivers of national prestige and security.
  • It also sends a signal about the government's emphasis on Atmanirbhar Bharat (self-reliant India) in high-tech domains.

The President of India to Confer National Geoscience Awards 2024 on 26th September 2025 in New Delhi

  • The President of India, Droupadi Murmu conferred the prestigious National Geoscience Awards (NGA) 2024 at a ceremonial function held at the Rashtrapati Bhavan Cultural Centre, New Delhi, in September 2025. The event graced by the presence of G. Kishan Reddy, Union Minister for Coal & Mines and Satish Chandra Dubey, Minister of State for Coal & Mines.
  • Instituted in 1966 by the Ministry of Mines, Government of India, the National Geoscience Awards (formerly known as the National Mineral Awards until 2009) are among the country's oldest and most prestigious honors in the field of geosciences.
  • The objective of these Awards was to honour individuals and teams for extraordinary achievements and outstanding contributions in various fields of geosciences i.e. mineral discovery & exploration, Mining Technology & Mineral Beneficiation, fundamental/ applied geosciences.
  • The Ministry of Mines presents the National Geoscience Awards annually under the following three categories:
    (i) National Geoscience Award for Lifetime Achievement
    (ii) National Geoscience Award
    (iii) National Young Geoscientist Award

Indian Entrepreneur Among Winners of UNEP's 2025 Young Champions of the Earth Prize

  • Three young entrepreneurs from India, Kenya, and the United States have been named winners of the UN Environment Programme's (UNEP) 2025 Young Champions of the Earth award, announced in Nairobi, Kenya, in September 2025.
  • Jinali Mody of India, a winner of the award, is the founder of Banofi Leather, which produces leather alternatives from banana-crop waste. The women-led company aims to reduce the fast-fashion industry's environmental footprint by cutting water use, toxic effluents, and carbon emissions compared with conventional leather.
  • Joseph Nguthiru of Kenya, whose company HyaPak transforms the invasive water hyacinth in Lake Naivasha into biodegradable packaging bags and seedling wrappers, replacing single-use plastics.
  • Noemi Florea of US, founder of Cycleau, a compact greywater reuse system that retrofits under sinks, showers and laundry units to convert wastewater into drinking water, with significantly lower energy use than existing systems.

President Murmu Graces Award Ceremony of 64th National Exhibition of Art

  • President Droupadi Murmu, in September 2025, attended the award ceremony of the 64th National Exhibition of Art, organised by the Lalit Kala Akademi, in New Delhi.
  • Congratulating the award winners, the President expressed confidence that their work would inspire countless other artists. She highlighted that, in Indian tradition, art has always been regarded as a spiritual practice and a medium that enriches cultural heritage while fostering a more sensitive society.
  • President Murmu praised the creativity and imagination of artists, noting that their works are helping to present the image of a "new India." She emphasised that artists invest significant time, energy, and resources into their creations, and called for ensuring fair prices for artworks to encourage artists and those aspiring to take up art as a profession.
  • Appreciating Lalit Kala Akademi's efforts to promote the sale of artworks, the President said this would provide financial support to artists and strengthen the nation's creative economy. She urged art lovers to not only appreciate art but also purchase and display it, reinforcing India's identity as both an economic and cultural power.
