  • In 1994, the Founder of the Thalassemia International Federation (TIF), Panos Englezos, established World Thalassaemia Day in memory of his son George, who lost his life to the disease. The day was created to unite efforts in fighting thalassaemia, remembering those who succumbed to it, and finding a cure.

Rabindranath Tagore Jayanti 2024

  • Rabindranath Tagore Jayanti 2024, also known as Rabindra Jayanti, falls on May 8th to commemorate the birth anniversary of Rabindranath Tagore. Born on May 7, 1861, in Kolkata to Debendranath Tagore and Sarada Devi, Tagore's influence extends far beyond his birthplace, resonating across literature, music, and art worldwide.
  • He was a revered Bengali polymath, poet, writer, philosopher, and Nobel laureate. World Asthma Day

  • World Asthma Day is a global healthcare event commemorated every year on the first Tuesday in May to promote awareness of asthma worldwide. This year 2024 World Asthma Day is observed on the 7th of May (Tuesday). On this day, various global and local organisations step forward together to combat the major global non-communicable disease in children and adults.
  • World Asthma Day is organized by the GINA, a World Health Organization collaborative organization founded in 1993. In 1998, more than 35 countries observed World Asthma Day, associated with the first World Asthma Meeting in Barcelona, Spain. Since then, World Asthma Day participation has grown, and the day has evolved into one of the world's most important asthma awareness and education activities.
  • This year, 2024, the World Asthma Day theme is 'Asthma Education Empowers'. This theme emphasises the need of educating people with asthma on how to manage their disease and when to seek medical attention.

BRO celebrates its 65th Raising Day

  • The Border Roads Organisation marked its 65th Raising Day on May 7 as Defence Secretary Giridhar Aramane urged the BRO to infuse latest technology and techniques for faster completion of projects, saying automation and mechanisation will be key for it in the future.
  • The defence ministry in a statement said the BRO will soon commence the construction on 4.10-km long Shinkun La Tunnel. Once completed, this tunnel will become the world's highest tunnel at 15,800 ft bypassing Mila Tunnel in China at 15,590 ft.
  • An event was organised in New Delhi on the occasion, which was presided over by the defence secretary.
  • In his address, he lauded the BRO for fulfilling its responsibilities successfully in inhospitable terrain and tough weather conditions.

World Athletics Day

  • World Athletics Day is celebrated on May 7. This annual event is celebrated by the global athletics community to promote the sport and its values of participation, unity, peace, and fair play. It's a day to inspire people of all ages and abilities to get involved in athletics, whether as athletes, coaches, officials, or simply fans.
  • This day was first observed in 1996 and it was launched by International Amateur Athletic Federation (IAAF) President Primo Nebiolo. The World Athletics Federation and International Amateur Athletic Federation (IAAF) organized sports events in all schools and colleges every year.
  • The International Amateur Athletic Federation (IAAF) was founded in 1912 to organize various sports events and athletics.
  • In 2001, the name of the International Amateur Athletic Federation (IAAF) was changed to the International Association of Athletics Federations. And in 2019, the name was again changed to World Athletics.

International No Diet Day

  • May 6 marks International No Diet Day, a global celebration dedicated to promoting body acceptance, embracing diversity and respecting all body shapes and sizes. This important day aims to raise awareness about weight discrimination and fatphobia, while also challenging harmful dieting practices. International No Diet Day encourages individuals to prioritise their mental and physical well-being over restrictive diets.
  • International No Diet Day was initiated in the United Kingdom by English feminist Mary Evans Young. Mary Evans, who had her struggles with body acceptance and anorexia, organized the first No Diet Day on May 5, 1992, in Hyde Park, London.
  • It was a small picnic attended by a dozen women who wore stickers that read, "Ditch That Diet." However, the date was subsequently changed to May 6, 1993, to avoid conflicts with Cinco de Mayo celebrations.
  • 'Embrace Yourself: Reject Diet Culture, Love You', this year's (2024) theme is all about embracing yourself.
