  • The International Day for Biological Diversity (IDB) was established in 1993 by the United Nations General Assembly. The IDB is celebrated annually on 22 May to increase understanding and awareness of biodiversity issues. The IDB was established in response to the growing concern about the loss of biodiversity. Biodiversity is essential for human life and well-being. It provides us with food, shelter, and other essential resources. It also regulates our climate, purifies our water, and enriches our cultural heritage.
  • The theme for this year's (2024) International Day for Biological Day Diversity is 'Be part of the plan'.

World Day for Cultural Diversity for Dialogue and Development

  • Held every year on May 21, UNESCO leads the celebration of World Day for Cultural Diversity for Dialogue and Development highlighting not only the richness of the world's cultures, but also the essential role of intercultural dialogue for achieving peace and sustainable development.
  • In 2002, the United Nations declared World Day for Cultural Diversity would be celebrated every May 21.

National Anti-Terrorism Day

  • Every year on May 21 India celebrates Anti-Terrorism Day to commemorate the death anniversary of former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi, who was assassinated by a suicide bomber of the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) at Sriperumbridor, a village now known as Chennai, on 21 May 1991. National Anti-Terrorism Day was first established in the country by the V. P. Singh government to commemorate the life of former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi and to educate people about the negative impact of terrorism and violence on society and the nation. The day also aims to promote peace and harmony in the country.

  • World Bee Day was established after Slovenia's successful proposal to the United Nations in December 2017. The date, May 20, marks the birth anniversary of Anton Janša, a pioneer of modern beekeeping, who was born in 1734. With the support of the Slovenian Government and NGO Apimondia, the UN General Assembly adopted this day to honor the significance of bees and other pollinators. The inaugural World Bee Day was celebrated on May 20, 2018.

The tradition of adopting an annual theme began in 1992, with the introduction of an international poster by ICOM in 1997, which was embraced by 28 countries that year.
  • The theme for 2024, 'Museums for Education and Research', emphasises the crucial role of cultural institutions in delivering a comprehensive educational experience.

World AIDS Vaccine Day

  • World AIDS Vaccine Day, also known as HIV Vaccine Awareness Day, is observed annually on May 18. The day is dedicated to recognising and promoting the need for AIDS vaccines. It also serves as an opportunity to show gratitude and honour the people such as doctors, scientists, and community members engaged in developing vaccines.
  • The day commemorates the speech made by then-President Bill Clinton at Morgan State University on May 18, 1997, where he emphasised the importance of creating a vaccine to stop the spread of the epidemic.

World Telecommunication and Information Society Day

  • World Telecommunication and Information Society Day (WTISD) is observed on May 17 every year. The day is dedicated to mark the foundation of the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), which happened on May 17, 1969.
  • World Telecommunication Day was first established in 1973 by the Plenipotentiary Conference in Malaga-Torremolinos, Spain, as Resolution 46. It is celebrated annually on 17 May since 1969 to commemorate the foundation of ITU, and the signing of the first International Telegraph Convention in 1865.
  • In 2005, the World Summit on the Information Society called on the UN General Assembly to establish 17 May as World Information Society Day to emphasize the significance of information and technology to society. The General Assembly accepted a resolution (A/RES/60/252) in March 2006 that declared 17 May as World Information Society Day.
  • The theme of World Telecommunication and Information Society Day 2024 is 'Digital Innovation for Sustainable Development'.

World Hypertension Day

  • World Hypertension Day (WHD) is an annual event observed on May 17 to raise awareness about hypertension (high blood pressure) and to promote the prevention, detection, and control of this condition.
  • The day was initiated to increase the awareness of hypertension. This was especially important because of the lack of appropriate knowledge among hypertensive patients. The World Hypertension League (WHL) launched its first WHD on May 14, 2005. Since 2006, the WHL has been dedicating May 17 of every year as WHD.
  • The theme for World Hypertension Day 2024 is 'Measure Your Blood Pressure Accurately, Control It, and Live Longer'.

National Endangered Species Day

  • National Endangered Species Day is celebrated every year on the third Friday of May. In 2024, it fell on May 17, 2024. The day is dedicated to raising awareness about the plight of endangered species and the need to take action to protect them. National Endangered Species Day was first established by David Robinson and the Endangered Species Coalition in 2006 to raise awareness about the threats faced by endangered species and their habitats. It serves as a platform to educate people about the importance of saving endangered species to maintain an ecological balance.
