Karachi's Erica Robin First Miss Universe Pakistan 2023
Erica Robin, a model from Karachi was crowned 'Miss Universe Pakistan 2023', becoming the first-ever woman from the country to win the title. Four other models from different parts of the country participated in the beauty pageant, including Hira Inam from Lahore, Jessical Wilson from Rawalpindi, Pakistani-American Malika Alvi from Pennsylvania, and Sabrina Wasim. Jessica Wilson, a cyber security engineer was named first runner-up, while Hira Inam, Malyka Alvi and Sabrina Wasim were the rest of the finalists.
Robin will be the official representative of Pakistan at the Miss Universe pageant, scheduled to be held in El Salvador later this year. Pakistan will be sending five models to compete in the prestigious Miss Universe pageant.
Gita Mehta, Author and Naveen Patnaik's Sister Passes Away
Eminent writer, journalist, and Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik's elder sister Gita Mehta passed away at the age of 80.
An eminent author, documentary filmmaker, and journalist, Gita Mehta was the elder sister of Naveen Patnaik and businessman Prem Patnaik.
In 1979, Gita wrote her first book 'Karma Cola', a collection of essays on Indian spirituality and the perception of the Western world about it.
In 1989, she wrote her first novel 'Raj' where she discussed India's colourful history and culture against the backdrop of the Indian colonial past. 'Snakes And Ladder' written by Gita is among the most seminal work.
In January 2019, the government of India awarded her Padma Shri in the field of literature and education, which she declined saying it may be misconstrued due to the timing of the award as it had come just before the general election.

Actor Rio Kapadia Passes Away
In an unfortunate development, renowned actor Rio Kapadia, who has worked in movies including Chak De India, Dil Chahta Hai and Happy New Year among others passed away. He was 66.
With a career spanning nearly three decades, Kapadia was also a model and acted in several hit TV shows.
In 2013, he earned accolades for his portrayal of King Gandhar in the epic serial 'Mahabharat'.

Noted Rudra veena exponent, Ustad Ali Zaki Hader, passed away in New Delhi. He was 50. Disciple of Ustad Asad Ali Khan, Ali Zaki Hader was the last exponent of the Khandarbani (Khandaharbani) style of the Jaipur Beenkar gharana of Dhrupad. With his untimely demise, this ancient tradition of Rudra veena came to an abrupt and tragic end.
Rudra veena is a sizable plucked string instrument employed in Hindustani music, particularly in the style of music known as dhrupad.
It is one of the main veena kinds used in Indian classical music and is renowned for its deep bass resonance.

Dennis Austin, Creator of PowerPoint, Passes Away
Dennis Austin, one of the two creators of Microsoft PowerPoint, passed away at the age of 76. Austin created PowerPoint with Robert Gaskins and released it in 1987. The pair of software developers was part of software company Forethought, which was acquired by Microsoft for $14m months after PowerPoint, then called Presenter was launched.
Dennis R. Austin was the principal software developer for PowerPoint from 1985 to 1996, particularly its versions for Apple Macintosh computers. Austin first encountered computers in high school at a summer program at the Carnegie Institute of Technology. His interest in programming languages and compilers deepened during his undergraduate engineering studies at the University of Virginia in the late 1960s.

Director-actor G. Marimuthu Passes Away
Popular Tamil actor and director G Marimuthu died at the age of 58.
G Marimuthu was known for his bold opinions, which often became a topic of debate on social media.
He had worked in over 50 movies, apart from directing movies and acting in TV shows. In 1990, G. Marimuthu left his hometown of Pasumalaitheri in Theni and moved to Chennai with dreams of becoming a film director.
Initially, he worked as a waiter in hotels, but soon he crossed paths with lyricist Vairamuthu, and eventually landed a role as an assistant director working with Rajkiran on films like Aranmanai Kili (1993) and Ellame En Rasathan (1995). Marimuthu continued his career as an assistant director, collaborating with renowned filmmakers such as Mani Ratnam, Vasanth, Seeman, and SJ Surya. He also worked as a co-director on Silambarasan's Manmadhan.
