Former US Astronaut Frank Borman, Who Led First Lunar Mission, Passes Away
Astronaut Frank Borman, who commanded Apollo 8's historic Christmas 1968 flight that circled the moon 10 times and paved the way for the lunar landing the next year, died at the age of 95.
Borman spent a total of almost 20 days in space on two trips in the 1960s.
Borman also led troubled Eastern Airlines in the 1970s and early '80s after leaving the astronaut corps.
But he is best known for his NASA duties. He and his crew, James Lovell and William Anders, were the first Apollo mission to fly to the moon, and to see Earth as a distant sphere in space.
Launched from Florida's Cape Canaveral on Dec. 21, 1968, the Apollo 8 trio spent three days travelling to the moon, and slipped into lunar orbit on Christmas Eve. After they circled 10 times on Dec. 24-25, they headed home on Dec. 27.

At 97, Kerala Man Sets World Record as Longest Serving Lawyer
P. Balasubramanian Menon, a distinguished lawyer in northern Palakkad district of Kerala, achieved a significant milestone in the legal field.
At the age of 97, Menon secured a place in the Guinness Book of World Records as the longest serving advocate with an impressive career spanning 73 years and 60 days.
After pursuing legal studies from the Madras Law College, Menon began his career in the early 1950s.

Former Karnataka Speaker Chandre Gowda Passes Away
Veteran Karnataka politician and former minister D. B. Chandre Gowda passed away at the age of 87.
Gowda, who had represented all the four Houses—Legislative Assembly, Council, Lok Sabha, and Rajya Sabha, was also part of political parties such as Praja Socialist Party, Karnataka Kranti Ranga, Janata Party, Janata Dal, Congress and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).
He was in the limelight when he resigned as Lok Sabha member in 1978 to make way for former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi to contest from Chikkamagaluru Constituency, and worked for her victory.
After vacating the seat for Indira Gandhi, Gowda became the Member of the Legislative Council, from 1978 to 1983 representing Congress, and became a Minister in Devaraj Urs cabinet.
Later, with the change in political scenario, he quit Congress along with Urs to join Karnataka Kranti Ranga.
He was Rajya Sabha member in 1986, representing the Janata Party, which later became Janata Dal.
In 2009, he contested from Bangalore North Parliamentary Constituency and entered Lok Sabha on a BJP ticket.
Gowda, who served as a minister in various governments, also served as Speaker of the State Legislative Assembly from 1983 to 1985 and also as a Leader of the Opposition in both the Legislative Assembly and Council.

Writer Leela Omchery Passes Away
Eminent singer, musicologist and writer Leela Omchery passed away at the age of 94 years.
Born at Thiruvattar in Kanyakumari in 1929, she lived much of her life in Delhi. She had proved her mettle in Carnatic music, Hindustani music, Sopana Sangeetham and folk songs.
Proficient in Carnatic, Hindustani, Sopanam and folk music, she was honoured her with Padma Shri in 2008.
Sunil Narine Announces Retirement from International Cricket
Mystery spinner Sunil Narine announced his retirement from international cricket.
The 35-year-old played 6 Tests, 65 ODIs, and 51 T20Is and was part of the T20 World Cup-winning West Indies side in 2012.
The T20 globetrotter last played for the senior national team in 2019 in T20I cricket. His last Test was in 2013 while he had not played an ODI after 2016.
Sunil Narine also announced he would retiring from the domestic 50-over competition at the end of the ongoing Super 50 Cup in which he is representing Trinidad and Tobago.
Narine's record for the West Indies in international cricket is impressive. He took 92 wickets in 65 ODI matches and 48 wickets in 47 T20 International matches. In addition, he played six Test matches, taking 21 wickets with best figures of 6-91.

NASA Apollo astronaut Thomas Kenneth Mattingly II passed away
Apollo astronaut Thomas Kenneth Mattingly II, known for helping the crew of Apollo 13 safely return to Earth after an explosion doomed their lunar mission, has died at the age of 87.
Starting his career with the US Navy, Mattingly, who went by Ken and TK, eventually joined the Air Force Aerospace Research Pilot School as a student, before being chosen by NASA to be part of the astronaut class in 1966.
