The company is the exclusive licensee of the denim brand in India. Jim Hines: First Sprinter to run 100 m in under 10 Seconds Dies

  • US sprinter Jim Hines, the first man to run the 100 m in under 10 seconds, has died at the age of 76.
  • He broke the record in 1968 when he recorded a hand-timed 9.9 seconds at the US Championships.
  • Hines then broke his own record shortly after while winning gold at the 1968 Olympics, where an electronic timer in Mexico City recorded him at 9.95.
  • His record held for nearly 15 years until Calvin Smith ran a time of 9.93 in 1983.
  • This is the longest length of time an athlete has held the record for the men's 100 m since the International Amateur Athletic Foundation began keeping track - 110 years ago.

Mahabharat's Shakuni Mama aka Gufi Paintal Passes Away

  • Gufi Paintal, best known for playing 'Shakuni mama' in the epic TV serial "Mahabharat", passed away. He was 79. Paintal's acting credits also include 1980s Hindi films such as "Suhaag", "Dillagi", as well as television shows "CID" and "Hello Inspector", but his manipulative uncle act as Shakuni mama from BR Chopra's "Mahabharat" made him a household name.
  • Sarabjeet Singh Paintal was in the army before he became an actor, as his brother, Amarjit Paintal, was already a Bollywood star. From working as a casting director, he ended up working in films and various TV serials.

Ayushmann Khurrana Goodwill Ambassador for Special Olympics Bharat

  • Bollywood star Ayushmann Khurrana, who is the National Ambassador of UNICEF, was appointed as the Goodwill Ambassador for Special Olympics Bharat. The actor is delighted with his participation and is excited to cheer for India's team players in the upcoming World Summer Games in Berlin.
  • The Special Olympics Bharat has scaled up the preparation of the athletes ahead of the Special Olympics World Summer Games, which are set to take place in Berlin, Germany, between June 17 and 25. India will be sending a 280 strong contingent comprising 198 athletes and partners along with 57 coaches who will be competing across 16 sports disciplines at the prestigious event.

Veteran Actress Sulochana Latkar - Screen 'Mom' Passes Away

  • Veteran actress Sulochana Latkar - who played memorable roles in films in over 250 Hindi and 50-odd Marathi films, and was the screen mother to many top stars - passed away. She was 94.
  • Sulochana - as she was popular in the film industry - was noted for wide ranging roles, from lead roles supporting characters to a motherly figure, and endeared herself to the viewers for over six decades.
  • Some of her memorable early performances as the lead heroine were in Marathi films like 'Sasurvas', 'Vahinichya Bangdya', 'Meeth Bhakar', 'Sangtye Aika' and 'Dhakti Jau' and many more.
  • Born on July 30, 1928 at Khadaklat village of Belagavi (now in Karnataka), she made her film debut in 1946.
  • Among her top Bollywood films was in the Bimal Roy classic, 'Bandini' (1963), which is remembered even today.
  • Over the years she played the on screen mother to many stars including Dharmendra, Rajesh Khanna, Rishi Kapoor, Amitabh Bachchan, Vinod Khanna, Rajendra Kumar, Sanjeev Kumar, Nutan, Asha Parekh, Waheeda Rehman, Zeenat Aman, Tanuja, and others.
  • Sulochana was conferred the Padma Shri in 1999, and the Filmfare Lifetime Achievement Award in 2004.
  • The Maharashtra government bestowed the 'Maharashtra Bhushan Award', the highest honour of the state.

Noted Sanskrit Scholar Ved Kumari Ghai Passes Away

  • Sanskrit scholar Ved Kumari Ghai passed away at the age of 91. She did her MA and PhD in Sanskrit from the University of Jammu. She also studied at the Banaras Hindu University and the University of Oxford.
  • Ghai was a prolific scholar and author of several books on Sanskrit literature. She started her career as a professor of Sanskrit at Government College for Women, Parade, Jammu. She was a head of post graduate level Sanskrit Department, Jammu University until her retirement on 31 December 1991. She taught Panini's Sanskrit grammar and literature at the Institute of Indian Studies, Copenhagen University, Denmark in 1966–1967 and 1978–1980. She was a scholar in Dogri language and also knew Hindi.
  • Ghai was awarded the Padma Shri, the fourth-highest civilian award in India, in 2001 for her contributions to Sanskrit literature. She was also a recipient of the Sahitya Akademi Award, the highest literary award in India, in 1991 for her book 'The Sanskrit Language'.

Sachin Tendulkar Now 'Smile Ambassador' for Maharashtra Govt

  • The Maharashtra government named cricket great Sachin Tendulkar as Maharashtra's 'Smile Ambassador' under the state's 'Swachh Mukh Abhiyan' to spread awareness about oral health and hygiene across the state. The batting legend will be the face of the state medical education and drug department's Swachh Mukh Abhiyan (SMA) and has offered his association free of cost, and for the entire duration the government wishes to run the programme.
  • The SMA campaign has been conceptualised in association with the Indian Dental Association (IDA) in order to promote oral hygiene. The SMA aims to educate people about the importance of good oral hygiene by spreading awareness about the same.
  • The IDA is hoping that this campaign is able to lead India to optimal oral health and pave the way for a new model of oral health care.
