Kerala's First 'Ashoka Chakra' Winner Havildar Alby D'Cruz Passes Away

  • Alby D'Cruz, Kerala's first Ashoka Chakra recipient, passed away. He was 87. Alby, received India's highest peacetime military decoration from the first President, Rajendra Prasad.
  • The country honoured him with the Ashoka Chakra for his extraordinary bravery during the civil strife with the Naga rebels in the 1960s. In a ceremony held in New Delhi on April 30, 1962, President Rajendra Prasad, presented the Ashoka Chakra to Alby. The then Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru also congratulated him on the occasion.
  • While serving in Assam Rifles, Alby took part in the battle with Naga insurgents.

Award-winning DD Anchor Gitanjali Aiyar Passes Away

  • Gitanjali Aiyar, one of India's first English female news presenters on national broadcaster Doordarshan, passed away. She was in her mid 70s.
  • Graduated from Kolkata's Loreto College, Aiyar joined Doordarshan in 1971 and was awarded the best anchor four times. She also won the Indira Gandhi Priyadarshini Award for Outstanding Women in 1989. In her decades-long illustrious career, she was also associated with the World Wildlife Fund (WWF).

Renowned Theatre Actor and Director Aamir Raza Hussain Passes Away

  • Aamir Raza Husain, a renowned theatre actor and director famous for his grand open-air stage productions like "The Fifty Day War," inspired by the Kargil War, and "The Legend of Ram," passed away at the age of 66. He was also the Creative Director of Stagedoor Theatre company, established in 1974, which has presented over 91 productions and more than 1,100 performances. Husain's remarkable contributions to the stage include unforgettable plays such as 'The Fifty Day War' (2000) and 'The Legend of Ram.'
  • Husain made his stage debut at the prestigious Mayo College in Ajmer playing the craftsman Tom Snout in William Shakespeare's A Midsummer Night's Dream.
  • Aamir Raza Hussain was honoured with the Padma Shri in 2011 by the government for his contribution to theatre.
