India Beat France to Record Lone Win in Five-nation Hockey

  • Captain Harmanpreet Singh and Jugraj Singh struck a brace each as the Indian men's hockey team beat France 5-4 in its fourth and final match to notch up its lone win in the 5 Nations Tournament Valencia 2023. India had lost 0-1 to Spain, 2-7 to Belgium and 2-3 to Germany.

Former Proteas Captain Dean Elgar to Retire after IND-SA Test in Cape Town

  • Former South Africa Test captain Dean Elgar will retire after the two-match Test series against India. South Africa vs India 2nd Test, starting January 3, is going to be his last Test match.
  • Elgar said that the Cape Town Test is going to be his last as he termed the New Lands' stadis his favourite. Elgar had made his Test debut in Cape Town and he is hoping to score the last at the same venue.

Football: Manchester City Wins Maiden FIFA Club World Cup

  • Manchester City won the FIFA Club World Cup for the first time to end 2023 with five trophies after a 4-0 win over Fluminense in Jeddah.
  • The FIFA Club World Cup is an international men's association football competition organised by the Fédération Internationale de Football Association (FIFA), the sport's global governing body. The competition was first contested in 2000 as the FIFA Club World Championship. It was not held from 2001 to 2004 due to a combination of factors.
  • In 2005, the Intercontinental Cup was merged with the FIFA Club World Championship, and in 2006, the tournament was renamed as the FIFA Club World Cup.

WFI Writes to UWW for Lifting Suspension

  • The newly-elected body of the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) requested the world governing body UWW to lift the ban imposed on it and also announced that it will host the senior National Championships from January 28 in Maharashtra's Ahmednagar.
  • The United World Wrestling (UWW) had suspended WFI in August 2023 for not holding timely elections that were delayed due to various court cases.

  • Sakshi Malik announced her retirement from wrestling, after Sanjay Singh was appointed President of the Wrestling Federation of India.
  • Malik, who spearheaded the wrestlers' protest against Brij Bhushan Singh along with Bajrang Punia and Vinesh Phogat said that she would not compete under the presidency of Sanjay, who belongs to the faction supporting Brij Bhushan.

  • Indian hockey team midfielder, Hardik Singh, clinched the prestigious title of Men's FIH Player of the Year at the FIH Hockey Star Awards 2023. Soumya Sarkar Breaks Sachin Tendulkar's 14-year-old Record

  • Bangladesh opener Soumya Sarkar hit his career-best ODI score of 169 off just 151 deliveries and helped Bangladesh post 291 all out in 49.5 overs, breaking legendary cricketer Sachin Tendulkar's 14-year-old record during the second ODI match against New Zealand in Nelson.
  • He broke the record for the highest individual score in New Zealand by a sub-continent batsman. The master blaster Sachin Tendulkar scored a record 163 runs in Christchurch 2009 against the Kiwis in their backyard.

Maharashtra Bags Women's and AAI Wins Men's Title Events in Guwahati

  • In team events of the 75th Inter-State-Inter-Zonal Badminton Championships 2023, Maharashtra bagged the women's and Airport Authority of India (AAI) won the men's title events in Guwahati.
  • The prestigious national championship was held in Assam after four years. AAI team appeared in both men's and women's team finals but won the title in the men's category defeating Karnataka 3-0.
  • In the women's team final, Maharashtra dominated AAI 3-0 and won.

Amitabh Bachchan Becomes Owner of Mumbai Team in Indian Street Premier League

  • Legendary actor Amitabh Bachchan revealed his ownership of the Mumbai team in the upcoming Indian Street Premier League (ISPL). The ISPL, India's first tennis ball T10 cricket tournament played within a stadium, is set to kick off its inaugural edition from March 2 to March 9, 2024 in Mumbai.
  • The ISPL introduces a unique and exciting cricketing format, bringing together the thrill of T20 matches and the grassroots essence of tennis ball cricket. The tournament aims to provide a platform for street cricketers to showcase their talent on a professional stage.
  • The ISPL will feature a total of 19 high-intensity matches during its inaugural edition. The six participating teams are Hyderabad, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Kolkata and Srinagar. Each team represents a city, providing a diverse and competitive mix of players from various regions.

IPL 2024 Auction: Mitchell Starc Costliest Buy

  • At a historic IPL 2024 auction, Australia's Mitchell Starc surpassed his compatriot Pat Cummins and became the costliest player in the league's history, bought at Rs. 24.75 crore by the Kolkata Knight Riders, at the Coca-Cola Arena in Dubai.
  • The bidding for Starc began with Delhi Capitals and Mumbai Indians raising their pedals with the speed of light. But they lasted only till the team his price reached Rs. 10 crore from a base price of Rs. 2 crore.
  • The bidding was then joined by Gujarat Titans and Kolkata Knight Riders who bid intensely as they had money in their coffers to spend. In the end, at Rs. 24.75 crore, KKR overpowered the GT side and got the Australian for a staggering, unprecedented price tag.

U-19 Asia Cup, Bangladesh Beat UAE to Lift Trophy

  • Bangladesh defeated UAE by 195 runs and won the Under-19 Asia Cup in Dubai.
  • Opening the batting, Ashiqur smashed 12 fours and one six in his knock of 129 (149 balls) as Bangladesh posted 282/8 after hosts UAE opted to field.
  • In reply, UAE surrendered meekly to fold up for 87 in 24.5 overs as Bangladesh clinched the eight-nation tournament with five wins from as many games.
  • The Under-19 Asia Cup is a cricket tournament organised by the Asian Cricket Council for Under-19 teams from its member nations. It was first held in 1989 in Bangladesh where India won the tournament.
