NTPC and Indian Army Join Hands for Round-the-Clock Power Supply using Green Hydrogen

State-owned power generator NTPC partnered with the Indian Army to set up a Solar Hydrogen-based microgrid at Chushul, Ladakh. This will provide a stable power supply using Green Hydrogen in off-grid Army locations. Defence Minister Rajnath Singh laid the foundation stone of this project.
NTPC designed this Solar Hydrogen-based microgrid system to operate independently, using hydrogen as an energy storage medium. This project will supply 200kW of power round-the-clock throughout the year.
This system will replace existing diesel gensets at off-grid Army locations, providing a sustainable power supply despite harsh winter conditions, where temperatures drop to -30°C at an altitude of 4,400 meters. NTPC will maintain the project for 25 years.

Heavy Rains Lash Bengal as Severe Cyclone 'Dana' Batters Odisha Coast (26)

Heavy rains packed with gusty winds lashed parts of southern West Bengal as the severe cyclonic storm 'Dana' tore through the Odisha coast.
The state administration evacuated over 2.5 lakh people in anticipation of the severe cyclonic storm 'Dana.' Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee announced that the state had identified more than 3.5 lakh people for evacuation from low-lying areas. Banerjee, along with senior officials, camped at the state secretariat overnight to monitor the situation.
Thirteen battalions from the state's disaster management force and 14 battalions from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) were deployed in the coastal regions.

New Snake Species in Himalayas Named After Leonardo DiCaprio

A team of scientists discovered a new species of snake in the Western Himalayas, naming it Anguiculus dicaprioi in honour of Hollywood star Leonardo DiCaprio, recognising his significant contributions to wildlife conservation.
DiCaprio has been involved in creating awareness about environmental issues and funding field conservation activities and research.

Colombia Hosts COP16

The two-week United Nations Biodiversity Conference (COP16) commenced in Colombia, bringing together environmental leaders from nearly 200 countries to evaluate historic commitments aimed at halting and reversing the loss of biodiversity. This significant gathering follows the signing of the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework by 196 countries, an ambitious treaty designed to protect the planet's diverse ecosystems.
Delegates in Cali will discuss strategies to combat the rapid rate of destruction of natural habitats and ensure compliance with the 2022 biodiversity accord.
Countries are expected to commit to setting aside 30% of their territories for conservation purposes and to reduce subsidies for businesses that negatively impact the environment.
The conference aims to establish mandatory reporting for companies on their environmental impact, promoting transparency and accountability.
Colombia's Environment Minister and COP16 President, Susana Muhamad, emphasised the conference's importance as a platform to share experiences from diverse cultures and civilisations, aiming to create stable and livable conditions for future societies in light of the ongoing environmental crisis.

Hurricane Oscar Hits Cuba, Triggers Protests Amid Economic Crisis

Hurricane Oscar made landfall in the Bahamas before crossing Cuba's eastern coast, leaving at least six dead and causing widespread destruction. The storm triggered power outages that halted daily activities, prompting protests in neighbourhoods like Santos Suárez and central Havana. Residents banged pots and pans, while some blocked streets in protest over water shortages. The blackout followed energy issues that have persisted since Hurricane Ian in 2022.

The 14th Biennial Lake Conference

The 14th biennial lake conference concluded in Moodbidri, Karnataka. It focused on the theme 'Lake 2024 – wetlands for human wellbeing'. Organised by the Wetlands Research Group at the Indian Institute of Science and Alva's Education Foundation, the conference brought into light urgent ecological issues. It concluded with strong recommendations for the government to act on ecologically sensitive areas.
The conference urged the government to notify ecologically sensitive panchayats. This aligns with Section 5(1) of the Environment Protection Act 1986. The aim is to enhance ecosystem health through conservation practices tailored to specific locations.
