New Fire-Resilient, Dual-Blooming Plant Species Discovered in Western Ghats
Scientists discovered a new fire-resilient species of Dicliptera in the Northern Western Ghats of India, one of India's most biodiverse regions, named Dicliptera polymorpha. This new species is notable for its ability to thrive in harsh, fire-prone grasslands and its rare dual-blooming behaviour, making it a significant addition to the biodiversity of the region.
The discovery was made by a team from the Agharkar Research Institute (ARI), Pune.

Uttar Pradesh Defies Centre's Order, Opens Tiger Reserves to Public
The Uttar Pradesh Government commenced boating, safari and establishment of parks in the core zones of its tiger reserves despite Centre's order that called for the removal of all the tourism structures from the reserves.
In 2019, National Tiger Conservation Authority (NTCA), a statutory authority under the Union environment ministry directed all the states to remove tourism structures from core tiger zones to protect tiger habitats. The order also stated that no new permanent tourist facilities in core areas of tiger reserves should be allowed. A core area of a tiger reserve is free from human interference and any activities like construction, eco-tourism facilities are banned.

Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki Erupts
Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki in eastern Indonesia erupted, spewing a massive ash column over 6,500 meters high, as authorities ramped up warnings and evacuation efforts. The 1,584-meter volcano, located on Flores Island, has shown increasing volcanic activity, with eruptions causing fatalities and severe damage. Indonesia, situated on the Pacific Ring of Fire, is highly susceptible to volcanic eruptions, and Lewotobi's latest eruption serves as a stark reminder of the region's volatility.
New Jumping Spider Species Discovered in Pune
Researchers discovered of a new species of jumping spider named Okinawicius tekdi on Baner Hill in Pune. This finding marks the rich biodiversity of the region and the urgent need for conservation efforts to protect urban natural landscapes.
The species was discovered by Atharva Kulkarni, an MSc student from MIT-World Peace University, and Rishikesh Tripathi from Christ College, Kerala. They were guided by Dr Pankaj Koparde and Dr. A.V. Sudhikumar. The study was published in the Journal of Arachnology.

Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan Form Joint Panel for Cheetah Project
In response to recent incidents of cheetahs from Madhya Pradesh straying into neighboring Rajasthan, a joint corridor management committee has been established between the two states. The committee's primary focus will be on the conservation of these felines, ensuring the development of suitable habitats, and facilitating the future relocation of cheetahs from Madhya Pradesh's Kuno National Park (KNP) and Gandhi Sagar Sanctuary.
The formation of a ten-member joint committee by Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan aims to develop and manage a cheetah corridor between the two states, ensuring safe movement of cheetahs.
