Judicial member Rakesh Kumar Resigns as Member of National Company Law Appellate Tribunal

Rakesh Kumar, judicial member of the National Company Law Appellate Tribunal (NCLAT), tendered his resignation in the wake of the Supreme Court issuing a contempt notice against him for passing a verdict defying an interim order of the Apex Court.
Appearing for Kumar, Senior Advocate P.S. Patwalia, apprised the Apex Court about the development, just before the Bench led by Chief Justice of India D.Y. Chandrachud decided to dictate the order in the case.
The Bench of Chief Justice of India D.Y. Chandrachud, Justice J.B. Pardiwala and Justice Manoj Misra had issued showcause notices to Judicial Member Rakesh Kumar and Technical member Dr. Alok Srivastava over NCLAT's October 13 judgement, which ignored a status quo order passed by the Apex Court.

Justice Manoj Kumar Tiwari Acting Chief Justice of Uttarakhand High Court

The Central Government notified the appointment of Justice Manoj Kumar Tiwari as the Acting Chief Justice of Uttarakhand High Court with immediate effect.
Justice Tiwari took charge upon the retirement of Chief Justice Vipin Sanghi who demitted office.
Justice Tiwari enrolled with the Bar Council of Uttar Pradesh in 1990 and began practicing law at the Allahabad High Court. He later shifted to Nainital upon the creation of the Uttarakhand High Court in 2000.
Thereafter, he was designated a Senior Advocate in 2009, served as the President of the High Court Bar Association in Nainital in 2008 and acted as special counsel for the State Government in various cases.
The sanctioned judge strength at the time of creation in 2000 was 7; this was increased to 9 in 2003. Justice Ashok Desai was the inaugural holder of the office.

International Bar Association Annual Conference 2023

Against a background of global geopolitical, economic and technological challenges, the Annual Conference of the International Bar Association (IBA) is taking place this year (in 2023) in Paris, France from October 29 to November 3.
This is the 75th edition of the annual event, in which people from around the world are expected to gather to discuss, support and advance legal reform and social justice.
In 2023, for the first time in two decades, the event is held under the presidency of a woman, Almudena Arpón de Mendívil.
The IBA is a global network of more than 80,000 individual members who aim to work for the advancement of the rule of law. The organisation was founded in 1947.
Its global headquarters are located in London, England, and it has regional offices in Washington, D.C., United States, Seoul, South Korea and São Paulo, Brazil.

Supreme Court Dismisses Petition Challenging Election Symbol Allotment

The Supreme Court refused to entertain the petitions filed by political party BRS (Bharat Rashtra Samithi) challenging the decision of the Election Commission of India(ECI) to allot to other political parties symbols, which BRS claimed, were deceptively similar to its symbol (Car).
BRS filed a writ petition challenging the ECI allotting the symbols 'Road Roller' to Yuga Thulasi Party and 'Chapati Roller' to Alliance of Democratic, respectively. It also filed a Special Leave Petition challenging the refusal of the Telangana High Court to direct the ECI to delete from the list of free symbols those which are identical to BRS's symbols.

Justice Siddharth Mridul Sworn in as 7th Chief Justice of Manipur High Court

Justice Siddharth Mridul took oath as the 7th Chief Justice of the Manipur High Court.
Manipur Governor Anusuiya Uikey administered the oath of office to the new Chief Justice, at a ceremony held at Raj Bhavan in Imphal.
Manipur Chief Minister Nongthombam Biren Singh, his council of ministers, MLAs and top officials of the civil and state police, along with other dignitaries of the state, were present during the swearing in ceremony.
