Central Government Clears Appointment of Justice Abhay Ahuja as Permanent judge of Bombay High Court
The Central government cleared the appointment of additional judge Justice Abhay Ahuja as a permanent judge of the Bombay High Court.
Justice Ahuja was appointed additional judge of the Bombay High Court in February 2020 for two years.
In January 2022, his term was extended by the Central government till March 2023, following a recommendation by the Collegium in November 2021.
This term was further extended with effect from March 4, 2023.

Shashank Garg Appointed ICC India Arbitration Group Chair
The International Chamber of Commerce (ICC) appointed Advocate Shashank Garg as the new Chair of the ICC India Arbitration Group (IAG).
Garg took the reins from Senior Advocate Ciccu Mukhopadhaya.
Through a career spanning over 15 years, Garg has represented clients in numerous domestic and international arbitration across diverse sectors and was formerly a partner at a leading law firm in India.
Garg is also a member of the ICC Commission on Arbitration and ADR.
Central Government Appointments Judicial Officer Arvind Kumar Verma as Chhattisgarh High Court Judge
The Central government notified the appointment of judicial officer Arvind Kumar Verma as a judge of the Chhattisgarh High Court.
The Supreme Court Collegium had earlier recommended Verma's name for appointment as a High Court judge.
The Chhattisgarh High Court has a sanctioned strength of 22 judges.

J&K Approves Increase in Cadre Strength of Judges
Jammu and Kashmir raised the cadre strength of district judges by approving a proposal that supported the recommendations of Second National Judicial Pay Commission (SNJPC).
The Administrative Council (AC), which met under the Chairmanship of Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha, approved increasing the cadre strength of District Judges (Selection Grade) to 35 per cent from existing 25 per cent and District Judges (Super Time Scale) to 15 per cent from existing 10 per cent retrospectively.
Rajeev Rai Bhatnagar, Advisor to the Lieutenant Governor, and Atal Dulloo, Chief Secretary to LG, attended the meeting. The proposal of law department was approved by government to implement the SNJPC recommendations, which was accepted by the Supreme Court in case titled All India Judges Association Vs Union of India and Ors. The Ministry of Law and Justice also conveyed the approval of the competent authority regarding implementation of the recommendations of Second National Judicial Pay Commission.

The Supreme Court Collegium recommended the appointment of Karnataka High Court Chief Justice Prasanna B. Varale as a judge of the Supreme Court of India.
He is senior-most High Court Judge belonging to a Scheduled Caste and the only Chief Justice belonging to a Scheduled Caste among the Chief Justices of High Courts across the country.
Justice Varale enrolled as an advocate in August 1985 practiced under advocate SN Loya during his initial years. He also served as a lecturer at Ambedkar Law College in Aurangabad till 1992.
He was appointed a judge of the Bombay High Court in July 2008.
He was elevated as Chief Justice of the High Court of Karnataka in October 2022.

Centre Notifies Appointment of Advocate as Gujarat High Court Judge
The President of India approved the appointment of Advocate Pranav Shailesh Trivedi as a Judge of the Gujarat High Court.
The Supreme Court collegium had recommended this appointment earlier in January. Although the Supreme Court collegium had initially decided to return the proposal regarding Trivedi to the Chief Justice of the Gujarat High Court for being considered at the appropriate stage, the Centre referred the file back to the collegium requesting positive consideration.
With this appointment, the working strength of the Gujarat High Court rises to 30 judges, out of the sanctioned strength of 52.
