NTPC Limited to Launch New Edition of Girl Child Empowerment Mission (GEM)

  • NTPC Limited, India's largest power company, is set to unveil a new version of its flagship corporate social responsibility initiative, the Girl Child Empowerment Mission (GEM). This program aligns with the Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao (Save the Girl Child, Educate the Girl Child) campaign launched by the Government of India.
  • GEM aims to nurture the imaginations of girls and eliminate gender inequality by promoting their ability to explore opportunities.
  • The mission provides a platform for young girls to undergo a month-long workshop during summer vacations for their all-round development.
  • The new edition of GEM, starting from April 2024, will connect around 3,000 meritorious children from deprived sections of society across 42 identified locations of power sector PSUs.
  • With this, the total number of children benefiting from the mission will exceed 10,000.

Justice Anirudhha Bose to Head National Judicial Academy, Bhopal after Retirement

  • Supreme Court judge Justice Anirudhha Bose will be heading the National Judicial Academy, Bhopal after his retirement from the top court.
  • This was revealed by Chief Justice of India (CJI) D. Y. Chandrachud on the last working day of Justice Bose.
  • Justice Bose was born in 1959 and did his LLB from Surendranath Law College. He enrolled as a lawyer in 1985 and started his law practice before the Calcutta High Court.
  • He was appointed as a permanent Judge of the Calcutta High Court in January 2004 and was elevated as the Chief Justice of Jharkhand High Court on August 11, 2018.
  • He was elevated to Supreme Court of India on May 24, 2019.

Karnataka HC Hears Submissions from Lawyer Using Sign Language

  • Karnataka High Court became the first High Court in India to hear arguments of a speech and hearing-impaired advocate through sign language.
  • Bar and Bench reported that Justice M. Nagaprasanna praised Advocate Sarah Sunny for his determination and efforts. The hearing-impaired lawyer presented arguments in a case with the assistance of a sign language interpreter. 
  • The court's decision was also commended by the Additional Solicitor General Arvind Kamath who said that it is a historic moment for the Karnataka High Court.

'Must March with Time'" SC to Govt on Permanent Stint for Women in Coast Guard

  • The Supreme Court on Monday told the Centre that denying permanent commission to a woman Coast Guard officer on the ground that it is "functionally different" from the Indian Army and Indian Navy cannot be accepted in today's times, indicating that the court will step in if the government fails to remedy the situation.
  • After granting permanent commissions to women short service commission officers in the Army, Navy, and Air Force, the Supreme Court on Monday decided to investigate similar career opportunities for women short service agreement (SSA) officers in the Indian Coast Guard, while also ordering the interim reinstatement of a woman officer who was discharged in December 2023 after a 14-year career.

Securities Appellate Tribunal Gets New Presiding Officer and Technical Member

  • The Finance Ministry appointed P. S. Dinesh Kumar, a retired judge, as the presiding officer of the Securities Appellate Tribunal (SAT) for four years.
  • Kumar is a former Chief Justice of the Karnataka High Court. He was a judge at the High Court since 2015 and vacated office in February this year. His tenure as chief justice was less than a month. Kumar assumed charge on January 31 after the Supreme Court collegium recommended his name to the government on January 19.
  • The ministry has also appointed Dheeraj Bhatnagar as a technical member of the tribunal for four years or till he reaches the age of 67, whichever is earlier. Bhatnagar retired as principal chief commissioner of Income Tax, Delhi.

Gauhati High Court Celebrates 76th Establishment Day (6)

  • The Gauhati High Court marked its 76th Establishment Day with an event held at Cotton University in Guwahati. The esteemed gathering witnessed the presence of former Chief Justice of India, Ranjan Gogoi, who graced the occasion as the chief guest.
  • Accompanied by several other dignitaries, Justice Gogoi shared his reflections on his days as a student at Cotton College, now transformed into a university. He also delivered a profound speech on the 'Role of The Judiciary In The Life of The Nation', the focal theme of the event.
  • The commemorative event at Cotton University served as a platform to honour the rich legacy of the Gauhati High Court and underscore its vital role in shaping the legal landscape of the nation.
  • The history of the Gauhati High Court traces back to its establishment on April 5, 1948, formerly known as the High Court of Assam. The inauguration was conducted by H. J. Kania, the then Chief Justice of India, with Sir R. F. Lodge sworn in as the first Chief Justice of Assam High Court. Initially situated at Shillong, the court later relocated to Guwahati on August 14, 1948.
  • Renamed as the Gauhati High Court in 1971 by the North-Eastern Areas (Reorganization) Act, 1971, it serves as the Principal Seat at Guwahati, Assam. Additionally, it oversees three outlying Benches, including Kohima Bench for Nagaland (established on 1.12.1972), Aizawl Bench for Mizoram (established on 5.7.1990), and Itanagar Bench for Arunachal Pradesh (established on 12.8.2000).
