Indian Army Sets up One of World's Highest Tank Repair Facilities Near China Border

  • With over 500 of its tanks and infantry combat vehicles deployed in Eastern Ladakh, the Indian Army created a record of sorts by setting up two of the world's highest tank repair facilities in that area to support its operations there.
  • The Indian Army has set up two armoured vehicle maintenance and repair facilities near the China border in Nyoma and the DBO Sector in that region to at altitudes of over 14,500 feet in the area, which is the world's highest battlefield for tanks and infantry combat vehicles along the LAC in Eastern Ladakh.

DRDO, HAL all Set to Collaborate on Radar Integration for Dornier Transport Aircraft

  • The integration of an aerial Surveillance and Reconnaissance Radar (SAR), being developed by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), with a Dornier light transport aircraft is expected to commence soon with the industry being roped in to execute the project.
  • DRDO's Electronics Research and Development Establishment is developing a high-resolution radar, which will be retrofitted on the Dornier-228 aircraft licensed produced by Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL).
  • The integration of the radar with the aircraft will enable evaluation and validation of the system's functionality and performance in the desired airborne operating environment, which in turn will pave the way for modifying and retrofitting the required number of platforms with SAR.

Indian Air Force Tests BHISHM Portable Hospital for Airdrop in Agra

  • The Indian Air Force tested BHISHM portable cubes at Agra for airdrops from the aircraft. This is the first time the Indian Air Force tested this portable hospital. This test was performed so that the portable hospital can be deployed to cater to emergencies anywhere.
  • As per the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, BHISHM portable cubes are a part of the broader initiative named "Project BHISHM" - Bharat Health Initiative for Sahyog, Hita and Maitri, which is tailored to treat up to 200 casualties, emphasising rapid response and comprehensive care.
  • Notably, the Aid Cube is equipped with several innovative tools designed to enhance disaster response and medical support during emergencies. It also integrates Artificial Intelligence (AI) and data analytics to facilitate effective coordination, real-time monitoring, and efficient management of medical services in the field.

China, Cambodia to Hold Joint Military Exercises

  • Cambodia and China will hold joint annual military drills amid US concerns that Beijing could use a Cambodian naval base to expand its influence in the region.
  • A Chinese warship brought troops and materials for the exercises in the coastal city of Sihanoukvill.
  • More than 2,000 troops, including 760 Chinese military personnel, will participate in the drills at a training centre in central Kampong Chhnang province and at sea off Preah Sihanouk province.
  • Cambodia has long been a staunch ally of China, receiving billions of dollars in investments.
  • The 15-day joint Cambodian-Chinese drills, dubbed Golden Dragon, will involve 14 warships -- three from China -- two helicopters and 69 tanks, and include live-fire, anti-terrorism and humanitarian exercises.

Meghalaya Gets First Woman Police Chief

  • Meghalaya is all set to get its first woman head of police with Idashisha Nongrang, a 1992-batch IPS officer, being appointed its new DGP.
  • The outgoing DGP, L. R. Bishnoi, will demit office on May 19, following which Nongrang will take charge on May 20. Nongrang, who is currently Meghalaya Director General of Civil Defence and Home Guard, was appointed to the top post for a period of two years.

Vice Admiral Sanjay Bhalla Assumes Charge as Chief of Personnel

  • Vice Admiral Sanjay Bhalla assumed charge as the Chief of Personnel of the Navy.
  • Commissioned in the Navy on January 1, 1989, Vice Admiral Bhalla held a number of specialist and operational appointments in his career both at sea and onshore.
  • After completing his specialisation course in communication and electronic warfare, he served as a specialist on board several frontline warships. He commanded INS Nishank, INS Taragiri and INS Beas. He was also the Flag Officer Commanding Eastern Fleet (FOCEF).
  • Vice Admiral Bhalla was the officer in 'tactical command' for the prestigious President's Fleet Review (PFR-22) and during the sea phase of the Navy's flagship multinational exercise MILAN-22. He has held important staff appointments at Naval Headquarters and also held a diplomatic assignment overseas.

India-France to Hold 7th Edition of Exercise 'Shakti' from May 13-26

  • In a bid to strengthen defence ties, India and France will conduct the 7th edition of the Joint Military Exercise 'Shakti' from May 13-26 in the Umroi region of Meghalaya.
  • The exercise aims to enhance the joint military capacity of both sides to undertake Multi-Domain Operations in a Sub Conventional scenario.
  • Additionally, the joint exercise will facilitate the development of interoperability bonhomie, and camaraderie between the Armed Forces of both nations.
