Justice Surya Kant appointed as 53rd Chief Justice of India

  • Justice Surya Kant, a senior judge of the Supreme Court, was appointed as the 53rd Chief Justice of India. He will assume office on November 24, 2025, succeeding Chief Justice Bhushan Gavai, and will serve until February 9, 2027.
  • The notification of the appointment of Justice Surya Kant was issued by the Department of Justice in the Union Law Ministry.
  • Justice Kant, who hails from Haryana, has served as Chief Justice of the Himachal Pradesh High Court and earlier as a judge of the Punjab and Haryana High Court before being elevated to the Supreme Court in May 2019.

  • Justice Tara Vitasta Ganju took oath as a judge of the Karnataka High Court.
  • Chief Justice Vibhu Bakhru administered the oath at a ceremony held on the premises of the High Court. With her appointment, the court now has 49 judges against the sanctioned strength of 62.

  • The Delhi High Court got three new judges after Justices Dinesh Mehta, Avneesh Jhingan and Chandrasekharan Sudha were sworn in.
  • Chief Justice Devendra Kumar Upadhyaya administered the oath of office to the new judges.
  • The transfer of the three justices was notified by the Central government after the Supreme Court Collegium recommendations.

Chief Justice of India B. R. Gavai Recommends Justice Surya Kant as His Successor

  • Justice Surya Kant was recommended to become the 53rd Chief Justice of India (CJI), following the retirement of Chief Justice Bhushan R. Gavai on November 23, 2025. Once formally appointed, Justice Kant will lead the Indian judiciary until February 9, 2027, marking a tenure of approximately 14 months. This recommendation, made by CJI Gavai to the Union Government, follows the established judicial convention of seniority in appointing the next CJI.

Former ASG Pinky Anand Appointed Judge of Bahrain International Commercial Court

  • Senior Advocate Pinky Anand was appointed a judge of the Bahrain International Commercial Court (BICC), which is set to launch on November 5.
  • Anand, a Senior Advocate with over 40 years of experience, previously served as Additional Solicitor General of India from 2014 to 2020. She has acted as an arbitrator in cases across India, Dubai, Malaysia and Singapore.
  • She has also represented India at the BRICS group of leading emerging economies and was a founding member of the group's legal forum.
