Centre Notifies Appointment of 5 Judges to Supreme Court of India

The Union government notified the appointment of five new judges to the Supreme Court. With their appointments, the number of judges in the Supreme Court will rise to 32. Currently, the Supreme Court of India has a sanctioned strength of thirty-four Judges and is presently functioning with twenty-seven Judges.

Virginity Test on Accused Women in Custody is Unconstitutional

The Delhi High Court held that the virginity test conducted on a female accused who is under the judicial or police custody is unconstitutional.
A single-judge bench of Justice Swarana Kanta Sharma said that the virginity test conducted on Sister Sephy, who was been convicted for the murder of Sister Abhaya in Kerala in the year 1992 was not in the spirit of constitution.
The bench added that whatever be the case the basic dignity of a person in custody should always be upheld.
Now that the criminal case is over, the Justice Sharma further granted liberty to Sister Sephy to seek compensation for violation of her human rights.

CJI DY Chandrachud Inaugrates 10 Virtual High Courts in Orissa

The Chief Justice of India (CJI) D. Y. Chandrachud inaugurated ten new virtual High Courts in 10 different districts of Orissa.
CJI who addressed the event virtually said that very soon by March 2023, Orissa would be the very first State on India which would have virtual High Courts in all its districts.
Talking about the virtual courts, the CJI mentioned that most of the Odisha residents will not have to travel even hours away from their home to reach the High Courts. Lawyers from any part of the State would be benefitted.

Supreme Court Rejects Challenge to Appointment of Advocate Victoria Gowri as Additional Judge of ...

The Supreme Court rejected the two petitions that challenged the appointment of Advocate Victoria Gowri as Additional Judge of the Madras High Court, even as the latter was sworn-in to the post at the Madras High Court.
As the hearing was in progress, the swearing-in ceremony took place at the Madras High Court. Acting Chief Justice of the Madras High Court, Justice T. Raja, administered the oath of office and secrecy to Victoria Gowri and four other Advocates. These include Pillaipakkam Bahukutumbi Balaji, Kandhasami Kulandaivelu Ramakrishnan, Ramachandran Kalaimathi and K. Govindarajan Thilakavadi.

Supreme Court Gets Five New Judges

Five new judges were appointed to the Supreme Court and Chief Justice of India D. Y. Chandrachud administered the oath to the five judges.
Union Law Minister Kiren Rijiju had announced the appointment of Justice Pankaj Mithal, Chief Justice, Rajasthan High Court; Justice Sanjay Karol, Chief Justice, Patna High Court; Justice P. V. Sanjay Kumar, Chief Justice, Manipur High Court; Justice Ahsanuddin Amanullah of Patna High Court; and Justice Manoj Misra of Allahabad High Court as apex court judges.
Their names were recommended by the Supreme Court Collegium on December 13 last year (2022).

Allahabad High Court Dismisses Petition in SC/ST Act Case

The Lucknow Bench of the Allahabad High Court said that it is not mandatory to file a chargesheet after the FIR is lodged in every case under the Scheduled Castes and the Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act.
The Division Bench of Justice Rajan Roy and Justice Sanjay Kumar Pachori heard the petition filed by Gyanendra Maurya.
The Petitioner has sought declaration that Section 4(2)(e) of the Scheduled Castes and the Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act 1989 and Rule 7(2) of the Scheduled Castes and the Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities Rules) 1995 be declared ultra vires Part III of the Constitution of India to the extent they said provisions necessarily direct for filing of chargesheet.

Five New Judges will be Appointed Soon, Centre Tells Supreme Court

The Union Government told the Supreme Court that five new judges, recommended by the collegium, would be appointed soon. Last month, the collegium recommended the names of three High Court Chief Justices and two judges for elevation to the apex court.
Attorney General R. Venkataramani told a bench of Justices S. K. Kaul and A.S. Oka that the warrant for appointment of these five names is expected to be issued soon.

Supreme Court to Celebrate Its Anniversary for First Time

For the first time ever, the Supreme Court of India celebrated the anniversary of its establishment on February 4. The 73rd anniversary was graced by Chief Justice of Singapore, Justice Sundaresh Menon, as chief guest and featured a lecture on the topic 'role of judiciary in a changing world'.
The Supreme Court came into existence on January 28, 1950, two days after India became a republic on January 26.
As per reports, it was CJI D. Y. Chandrachud's idea to start the tradition of celebrating the Supreme Court's anniversary.
