  • Justice Sanjaya Kumar Mishra was appointed as the Chief Justice of the Jharkhand High Court.
  • The Supreme Court Collegium had recommended for elevation in December 2022.
  • He has previously served as Acting Chief Justice of Uttarakhand High Court and Judge of Orissa High Court.

Justice Sonia Gokani Sworn in as Chief Justice of Gujarat High Court

  • Gujarat Governor Acharya Devvrat formally administered oath to Gujarat High Court Chief Justice (designate) Sonia Gokani at Raj Bhavan, Gandhinagar, making her officially the first woman to head the High Court.
  • The ceremony was kicked off with the President of India through its representative reading out 'the warrant of appointment'.
  • Chief Justice Gokani's appointment was approved by the central government.
  • Justice Gokani, who joined as the 28th Chief Justice of Gujarat High Court, will retire on February 25, making her tenure the shortest.

Appointment of Public Prosecutors: Delhi High Court Directs UPSC to File Fresh Status Report on 1...

  • The Delhi High Court directed the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) to file a fresh status report over 108 vacancies of Public Prosecutors in Delhi.
  • The Bench of Justice Satish Chander Sharma and Justice Subramonium Prasad, after hearing arguments from both the sides, directed the respondents to complete the appointment process by the next date of hearing, which was fixed at March 15.
  • The Counsel appearing for UPSC contended that only one proposal for the recruitment of 80 vacancies for the post of the Assistant Public Prosecutor (APP) in the Government of NCT of Delhi (GNCTD) was received by the Commission on October 7, 2022.
  • The Commission said that it has always tried to complete the process of recruitment in all cases, more particularly in the case of Public Prosecutor and APPs, as expeditiously as possible and the current process was likely to culminate in a final result very soon in the month of March, 2023.

  • The Supreme Court collegium passed the resolution after noting that the Delhi High Court Collegium had unanimously recommended that Justice Sharma be made a permanent judge.
  • The Collegium said that after the due scrutiny and evaluation of the material placed on record including the observations made by the Department of Justice in the file as well as the report of the Judgment Evaluation Committee it took this decision.

Supreme Court: PIL Seeks Filling of Vacant Post of Deputy Speaker in Lok Sabha, Legislative Assem...

  • The Supreme Court asked for the Central Government's response on a public interest litigation (PIL) petition that raises concerns over the failure to elect Deputy Speakers for the present Lok Sabha as well as the Legislative Assemblies of several States.
  • A bench comprising of Chief Justice of India D. Y. Chandrachud, Justice P.S. Narasimha and Justice J. B. Pardiwala issued notice to the Centre while asking the Attorney General for India to assist the Court in the matter.
  • Appearing for the petitioner, Senior Advocate Vibha Datta Makhija said that no election was conducted to the post of Deputy Speaker in the Parliament (Lok Sabha) as well as in the States of Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Jharkhand, Madhya Pradesh and Uttarakhand which is contrary to the mandate under Articles 73, 93 and 178 of the Constitution of India.

  • The Central Government notified the appointments of four Chief Justices of High Courts of different states and Union Territory.
  • The Ministry of Law and Justice issued a notification in regard to the elevation of Justice Sonia Giridhar Gokani, Judge, Gujarat High Court to Chief Justice of Gujarat High Court.
  • Justice Sandeep Mehta, Judge, Rajasthan High Court to Chief Justice of Gauhati High Court.
  • Justice Jaswant Singh, Judge, Orissa High Court to Chief Justice of Tripura High Court and Justice N. Kotiswar Singh, Judge, Gauhati High Court to Chief Justice, High Court of J & K and Ladakh.

Unlicensed Firearms: Supreme Court Directs Uttar Pradesh to File Affidavit on Possession, Usage

  • The Supreme Court took a suo motu cognizance of the possession and the use of unlicensed firearms in Uttar Pradesh.
  • It was while a Bench of Justice K. M. Joseph and Justice B. V. Nagarathna While was hearing a bail plea by a man who is accused of murdering a victim by firing a gun, that they took note of the misuse of unlicensed firearms.
  • The Uttar Pradesh government was directed by the Court for filing an affidavit on the number of cases that were registered for the possession and use of unlicensed firearms.
  • The court has asked for the state's stand on the same, along with the steps that have been taken to tackle this issue.
