In a First, IAF Assigns Woman Officer to Take Charge of Combat Unit
The Indian Air Force selected Group Captain Shaliza Dhami to take over command of a frontline combat unit in the Western sector, breaking the glass ceiling. For the first time ever in the IAF's history, a woman officer has been given command of a frontline combat unit - in this case, a missile squadron in the Western sector.
Group Captain Dhami was commissioned in the year 2003 as a helicopter pilot and has over 2,800 hours of flying experience. A Qualified Flying Instructor, she has served as Flight Commander of a Helicopter Unit in the Western sector.
Indo-France Joint Military Exercise FRINJEX-2023 Held at Thiruvananthapuram
The maiden joint military exercise FRINJEX-23 between Indian Army and French Army was conducted at Pangode Military Station in Kerala's Thiruvananthapuram on March 7-8, 2023.
It is for the first time that the armies of both nations engaged in this format with each contingent comprising a Company Group each from the Thiruvananthapuram-based Indian Army troops and French 6th Light Armoured Brigade.
The exercise was aimed at enhancing inter-operability, coordination and cooperation between both forces at the tactical level. The scope of the exercise involved the establishment and operationalisation of a joint command post to secure an envisaged area for undertaking joint humanitarian assistance and disaster relief, establishing an Internally Displaced Population (IDP) camp and move of disaster relief material.

U.S., South Korea Announce Largest Field Exercises in 5 Years
The South Korean and U.S. militaries announced they will hold their biggest joint field exercises in five years later this month, as the U.S. flew a long-range B-1B bomber to the Korean Peninsula in a show of force against North Korea.
The North has threatened to take unprecedently strong action against such exercises. It's likely that it will respond to the upcoming training with missile tests because it views it as an invasion rehearsal.
The South Korean and U.S. militaries said that they will conduct the Freedom Shield exercise, a computer-simulated command post training, from March 13 to 23 to strengthen their defence and response capabilities, and separate large-scale joint field training exercises called Warrior Shield FTX.
INS Trikand Takes Part in the International Maritime Exercise/Cutlass Express 2023
INS Trikand is taking part in the International Maritime Exercise/ Cutlass Express 2023 (IMX/CE-23), which is underway in the Gulf region and will conclude on March 16, 2023. She is participating in the exercise alongside participants from over 50 nations and international maritime agencies, with the common goal of improving maritime security and keeping the region's sea lanes safe for maritime commerce.
IMX/CE-23 is one of the world's largest multinational maritime exercises. While this is the Indian Navy's first IMX participation, it is also the second time an Indian Naval ship has participated in a CMF exercise. Previously, in November 2022, INS Trikand took part in the CMF-led Operation Sea Sword 2.

Naval Commanders' Conference Begins Aboard INS Vikrant
The first edition of the Naval Commanders' Conference of 2023 commenced. The Conference serves as a platform to discuss important security issues at the military-strategic level as well as to interact with senior government functionaries through an institutionalised forum.
The first phase of the Commanders' Conference is being held at sea, and for the first-time, onboard India's first indigenous aircraft carrier, INS Vikrant.
Defence Minister Rajnath Singh addressed the Naval Commanders onboard INS Vikrant on the opening day. Chief of Defence Staff and Chiefs of the Indian Army and Indian Air Force also interacted with the Naval Commanders during the conference.

Rashmi Shukla is Director-General of Sashastra Seema Bal
Senior Indian Police Service (IPS) officer, Rashmi Shukla was appointed as the Director-General of the Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB). SSB is the border-guarding force deployed along Nepal and Bhutan border. Rashmi Shukla, a 1988 batch IPS officer of the Maharashtra cadre, was posted with the Central Reserve Police (CRPF). She was heading the State Intelligence Department in Maharashtra Police when the phones of Shiv Sena leader Sanjay Raut and Nationalist Congress Party leader Eknath Khadse were allegedly tapped in 2019.

Govt. Approves Contract with L&T for Acquisition of 3 Cadet Training Ships
The Union Cabinet accorded approval to sign a contract with engineering and construction conglomerate Larsen & Toubro Limited (L&T) for the acquisition of three cadet training ships at an overall cost of Rs. 3,108.09 crore. The delivery of ships is scheduled to commence from 2026.
These ships will cater to the training of officer cadets, including women, at sea after their basic training to meet the future requirements of the Indian Navy.
The ships would also provide training to cadets from friendly countries with an aim to strengthen diplomatic relations. The ships can also be deployed for evacuation of people and Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Relief (HADR).
The ships will be indigenously designed, developed and constructed at L&T shipyard in Kattupalli, Chennai.
